India slams safe haven for Dawood in Pakistan

Nearly 20 years after serial bomb blasts in Mumbai killed 257 people and left 713 others injured, Pakistan continues to provide safe haven to fugitive don Dawood Ibrahim, India said at an Interpol meeting in Rome Monday.

Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde, addressing the Interpol general assembly, pointed out that red corner notices were pending against the crime don, according to an official statement issued here.

Lisa Ray excited about post wedding India visit

Lisa Ray is excited about visiting India for the first time after her marriage to management consultant Jason Dehni.

“Leaving for first trip to India as a newlywed. Speaking at the `Living with Cancer` Symposium in Delhi on Nov 9, offering living proof,” Lisa tweeted Monday night.

The Indian-Canadian actress, 40, exchanged vows with Dehni Oct 20 in Napa Valley.

Lisa, who fought multiple myeloma, a cancer of plasma cells, is now leading a healthy life.

She underwent stem cell transplant and was declared cancer-free in 2010.

CCI rejects Devgn’s plea against YRF; finds no merit in it

The Competition Commission has rejected the complaint from actor Ajay Devgn against Yash Raj Films for alleged abuse of dominant position in the Hindi film industry, saying that the plea does not have any merit.

Actor-producer Devgn’s complaint came ahead of the release this month of films by both the parties involved.

“The Commission has rejected the complaint of Ajay Devgn against Yash Raj Films as there was no merit in it. The complaint does not fall under any area that violates Competition rules,” said a senior official of the Competition Commission of India (CCI).

Under attack over a statement his detractors took umbrage at, BJP President Nitin Gadkari today denied comparing Swami Vivekananda with underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and expressed “sincere regrets” over the hurt to public sentiments caused by his remarks.

“I would like to reiterate that I never compared Swami Vivekananda with anyone. I had absolutely no no intention to project Swami Vivekananda in bad light.

“If my words about Swami Vivekananda have hurt the public sentiments in any manner, I express my sincere regrets,” he said in a statement.

A new probiotic taken twice a day has been found to lower key cholesterol-bearing molecules in the blood as well as “bad” and total cholesterol in patients with high cholesterol, a new study has found.

Probiotics are live microorganisms (naturally occurring bacteria in the gut) thought to have beneficial effects; common sources are yogurt or dietary supplements.

In previous studies, a formulation of the bacteria, known as Lactobacillus reuteri NCIMB 30242, has lowered blood levels of LDL or “bad” cholesterol.

US soldier was ‘lucid’ after Afghan massacre

A US soldier accused of killing 16 Afghan villagers was “lucid” and admitted to the crimes, witnesses and prosecutors said as he appeared in court for the first time on Monday.

Staff Sergeant Robert Bales, 39, had been drinking whisky and watching a violent action movie with comrades before heading out of his base twice to massacre victims including women and children in two nearby villages.

His wife and lawyer have claimed that Bales, a veteran of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, could not remember what he did on the night of March 11 in the Panjwayi district of Kandahar province.

Odisha issues notice to 103 mines

Odisha has served show cause notices on 103 state mines for extracting ore in excess of their stipulated limit, state Steel and Mines Secretary Rajesh Verma said Tuesday.

The mines are mostly of iron ore and the owners have been asked why they should not be charged for extracting excess ore and a penalty thereon, Verma told IANS.

The cost of the excess iron ore and penalty totals around Rs.68,000 crore for the 103 mines, Verma added.

The notices have been served in phases during the last two months, Verma said, adding that the ore was extracted during the last 10 years.

The benchmark Sensex moved in a narrow range. It touched a high of 18,829.07 points and a low of 18,726.94 points in intra-day trade.

Air India to pay outstanding salaries to employees by Diwali

Employees of the cash-strapped Air India can expect their outstanding salaries by Diwali. The government Tuesday told the airline to clear all dues by that time.

“Air India has decided to clear payment of salaries to all its employees for the months of September and October 2012 before Diwali,” a civil aviation ministry statement said.

“It (Air India) will also make up-to-date payment of PLI (productivity linked incentives) for all licensed category employees for the months of May and June 2012,” said the statement.

27 policemen, 6 villagers injured in clash at Bengal village

At least 27 policemen and six villagers were injured in pitched battles early on Tuesday in West Bengal’s Birbhum district, officials said.

Residents of the Loba village in the Khairasole police station area attacked the police party which went there early today to recover a earth-moving machine of a project which was forcibly kept by the villagers.

West Bengal Home secretary Basudeb Banerjee told reporters in Kolkata that 27 policemen and six villagers were injured in the clash.

He said that the police did not resort to firing and had shown patience.

Demand for China-made Diwali items surge

Demand for cheap and fancy China-made Diwali items like lights, lampshades, Ganesha and Laxmi idols, rangolis, crackers and gift products, has increased sharply this year, a survey has revealed.

According to the survey conducted by the Associated Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Assocham), the demands for China made products has surged 45 percent year-on-year this season.

Assocham secretary general D.S. Rawat said local artisans were the worst hit because of the influx of Chinese items in this festive season.

Uddhav Thackeray discharged from hospital

Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray was Tuesday discharged from Lilavati Hospital here after undergoing a second angioplasty Sunday, party officials said.

Uddhav, 52, underwent his first angioplasty in the same hospital July 20 and all three blockages in his artery were successfully removed after a surgery of nearly three hours.

The second procedure, a slightly simpler one, was conducted Sunday and lasted around 45 minutes.

EC rejects Swamy’s plea to derecognise Congress

The Election Commission (EC) on Tuesday rejected Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy’s plea to derecognise the Congress as a party for extending a Rs.90 crore loan to Associated Journals Ltd, publisher of the now defunct National Herald.

“Your letters dated Nov 3 and Nov 5 are not maintainable,” the EC said in a letter to Mr. Swamy.

The EC further told Mr. Swamy in its letter: “If the party (Congress) has not complied with any of the provisions of the Income Tax Act, as alleged by you, that matter does not fall within the jurisdiction of the commission.”
