Goods train derails, Delhi-Howrah route affected

Two wagons of a goods train derailed and hit an overhead electricity pole in the Panki yard area here on Wednesday evening, disrupting rail traffic on the important Delhi-Howrah route for few hours, a railway official said.

The incident occurred when two wagons of a goods train coming out of Panki yard got derailed and one of them hit a high-voltage electricity pole and left it leaning, Chief PRO of NCR Sandip Mathur said.

No one was injured in the incident, he confirmed.

As the electricity pole was damaged the power supply to Delhi-Howrah track was disrupted, he said.

Women charged with having sex with skeleton

These are the astonishing images of a woman kissing and hugging skulls, found inside the flat of a 37-year-old who allegedly kept skeleton parts in her flat so she could have sex with them.

The Swedish woman is suspected of using 100 parts, which included six skulls and one backbone, in ‘sexual situations’ and was charged with violating the peace of the deceased, prosecutors said.

Aam Aadmi Party to form 337 district committees

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will form 337 district committees in 18 states by January, the party’s national convener Arvind Kejriwal said here Wednesday.

Besides Prashant Bhushan, Sanjay Singh and Gopal Rai, Manish Sisodia and Anand Kumar would be the new party’s spokesmen, it was decided at the AAP’s second national executive meeting here.

A political affairs committee was also formed.

The party will focus on corruption in land acquisition, procurement prices, issues of contract and unorganised labour sector and continue with its exposes, said a leader.

Star Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal said here Wednesday that the 2012 season has been the best year of her career.

“I think this has been my best year so far. I won four tournaments to add to the Olympic medal which I won in London,” said Saina, who released her autobiography “Playing to Win” in the capital.

This year, the World No.3 won the Indonesia Open Super Series Premier, Denmark Open Super Series Premier, Swiss Open Grand Prix Gold, and the Thailand Open Grand Prix Gold to add to the bronze medal she won at the London Olympics in August.

Headley, Rana to be sentenced in Jan next year

The sentencing of American-born Lashkar-e-Tayiba terrorist David Headley, accused of involvement in 26/11 Mumbai attacks, has been fixed for January 17 next year while that of his accomplice Tahawwur Rana has been rescheduled for January 15 from December four.

According to Chicago court spokesperson Randall Samborn, US District Judge Harry Leinenweber will announce the sentence of the two accused, who have been charged with conspiracy of 2008 Mumbai attack and plan to attack a Denmark newspaper.

A demand notice has been sent by authorities to trusts run by Ramdev for alleged service tax evasion on about Rs one crore received from a private TV broadcaster for airing his programme on Yoga. Official sources said a demand notice was sent to Patanjali Yoga Peeth and Divya Yoga Trust in Haridwar seeking details of Rs 96 lakh received by them from the broadcaster and raising demand for payment of service tax on the amount.

Spurned lover stabs girl to death

Enraged over his love being spurned, a youth stabbed a minor girl to death and later tried to commit suicide here today, police said. Hyder (19) had been pestering the 13-year-old girl belonging to the same community to accept his love, but the girl had turned down it. The girl’s parents had also warned the youth and also informed his parents. When the girl was on her way to a private tailoring institute, Hyder accosted her, stabbed her several times and chopped off an ear lobe, resulting in her death on the spot,police said.

India has described as “worrisome” the continued presence in the Afghan region of the terror infrastructure, which draws support from “beyond its borders”, and sought concerted global action to isolate and root out the syndicate of al-Qaeda, Taliban and LeT.

India’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Manjeev Singh Puri, said Afghanistan continues to face “an existential threat from terrorism, drawing upon ideological, financial and logistical support from beyond its borders,” an indirect reference to Pakistan.

Zee journalists remanded in police custody, channel terms arrest illegal

A Delhi court Wednesday sent two Zee News journalists to two days’ police remand even as Delhi Police asked Zee Group chairman Subhash Chandra to join the probe into the extortion claims made against the channel by Jindal Group. The channel said the arrests were “illegal” and done under pressure from the industrial group owned by Congress MP Naveen Jindal.

Metropolitan Magistrate Gaumti Manocha sent the two journalists – Sudhir Chaudhary, head of Zee News, and Samir Ahluwalia, head of Zee Business, to two days custody of Crime Branch of Delhi Police and dismissed their bail plea.

A CBI court today dismissed the bail plea of YSR Congress leader Y S Jaganmohan Reddy in the alleged disproportionate assets case.

The special CBI judge here dismissed one of his bail petition while adjourned hearing on another bail petition to November 30.

Boy detained over ‘objectionable’ Facebook comment against Raj

A teenager was detained for questioning today at Palghar in neighbouring Thane district for posting “vulgar” comments against MNS chief Raj Thackeray and the people of Maharashtra on Facebook, police said.

“We have received a complaint against a person that he posted some objectionable comments against Raj Thackeray on Facebook. We are questioning him as we do not want to repeat the same mistakes committed a few days ago,” an officer at Palghar police station told PTI, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The boy has not been charged and police have sought legal opinion, he said.

Seven Egyptians get death in anti-Islam film case

Seven fugitive Egyptians were Wednesday sentenced to death in absentia for crimes related to unity and independence of Egypt following the release of a film that allegedly insulted Islam, state media reported.

On Sep 11, thousands of Egyptians surrounded the US embassy in Cairo protesting the movie that reportedly insulted Prophet Mohammad. Clashes between protesters and security forces left one dead and more than 200 people injured.

The Cairo Criminal Court Wednesday sentenced to death the seven defendants, who are Egyptian immigrants to the US, Xinhua reported.

Iran refuels nuclear plant

Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant has been refuelled and is ready to resume operations, the IRNA news agency reported Wednesday.

The refuelling operation was conducted Monday in the presence of experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the agency said.

On Nov 18, Iran’s IAEA Ambassador Ali Asghar Soltanieh said the removal of the fuel was a “routine technical procedure” related to the transfer of responsibility for the plant’s operation from Russia to Iran.

Maldives government using xenophobia against GMR: Nasheed

The Maldives government of President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik used xenophobia, nationalism and religious extremism to attack Indian firm GMR and annul an agreement to manage the airport in Male, former president Mohamed Nasheed said Wednesday.

Reacting to the government’s decision to annul the GMR agreement to manage the Ibrahim Nasir international airport, Nasheed told Haveeru online: “This decision is bad for tourism, bad for the economy and bad for the Maldivian people.”

Nasheed accused the government of using xenophobia against the country’s largest foreign investor.

Pakistani Cabinet approves anti-terror authority

The Pakistani Cabinet Wednesday approved a bill to set up a National Counter Terrorism Authority, Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira said.

The authority will be tasked with drawing up strategies to tackle the threat of terrorism, Xinhua reported.

Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf, who chaired the meeting, condemned the terror attacks on Shias in the country that left nearly 50 people dead in the past 10 days.

The NCTA will coordinate and complement the work of other law enforcement agencies in dealing with terrorism, Kaira said at a press conference.

Man convicted of hammering nail onto pig’s head

A Briton has been convicted of animal cruelty charges after he inhumanely slaughtered a pig. He first said he hammered a nail through the pig’s head but later told a court he had slit its throat.

An officer from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) found Ricky Clarkson, 48, cutting up the animal on a table in the front yard of his house in May this year, the Daily Mail reported.

The man initially said he killed the pig by hammering a nail through its head but later changed his story and told a court he had slit its throat.

Sex racket busted in city

Police today claimed to have busted a sex racket in the city with the arrest of nine girls and five men from a flat in Vasant Vihar area, a senior police official said today. Following a tip-off, the arrests were made late last night and a Maruti 800 and Rs 58,000 in cash were recovered from the accused, SSP Keval Khurana said. The racket was being run in the flat and the car which has been seized was used to transport the girls to customers in different hotels, he said.

In yet another shocker, police in Kerala have arrested a man on charges of sexually abusing his two minor daughters for the past two years. The plight of the two girls — aged 13 and 15 — came to light following a complaint by the man’s wife, police said. The man, a hotel employee, arrested near Kadurthuruthi in Kottayam district yesterday, has been charged under sections 376 (rape) and 377 (unnatural offences) of the IPC.
