Over a million homes without power in storm-hit US states

Over a million homes and businesses in Louisiana, the home state of Indian-American governor Bobby Jindal, and neighbouring Mississippi were still without power as a weakened storm began a slow trek northward.

Nearly half of Louisiana with some 901,000 homes and businesses was without power late Thursday as Tropical Storm Isaac now downgraded to tropical depression as workers started creating a small breach in a dam on Louisiana-Mississippi border to save parts of the state from flooding.

Bhopal gas tragedy: Demand for fresh trial under stringent IPC section

An NGO, party in the Bhopal gas tragedy case in the court and fighting for the rights of the victims, has said it will move an application in the High Court for setting up a special court to conduct a fresh trial against Union Carbide officials at that time.

This has become necessary after the dismissal of the CBI plea to change sections under which these officials should be tried, Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Udyog Sangthan convenor, Abdul Jabbar told PTI.

Standing Committee of GHMC refuses to buy garbage vehicles

(Siasat News)Will the garbage vehicles of GHMC vanish from the roads or will there be new vehicles?
Standing Committee of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation rejected the proposal of buying garbage vehicles saying that instead of buying the new garbage vehicles of less capacity, it is better to use new technology for sweeping the city roads.

Standing Committee is of the opinion that instead of extracting works from the sweepers, it is better to deploy automatic machines for sweeping the roads. The employees’ Union opines that it will lead to unemployment of the laborers.

Last date for pre-matric scholarship Sept. 3

Museum of erotic art attacked in Moscow

A group of conservative Christian activists have continued their spell of attacks on the Museum of Erotic Art in Moscow, the museum administration said.

The activists, who appeared shortly after midnight Tuesday, wielded a brick and threatened the manager, who fled fearing for her life, said Alexander Donskoi, a curator of the museum also known as “Tochka-G” or “G-Spot”.

Mental tension led to suicide

(Siasat News): A man who had developed mental tension as he was away from home, wife and children in connection with employment, committed suicide.

This incident occurred in Meerpet police station limits where 40-year-old Radhakrishna, resident of Chilkalguda, hanged himself at his residence.

He has been living away from his wife and children since last three months. He was said to be an alcoholic and had developed mental tension due to the loneliness. Police has registered a case.

‘Govt to not delay capital punishment to Kasab’

Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Jitendra Singh on Thursday said that the government would do no delay in the matter of capital punishment to Ajmal Kasab, the Pakistani terrorist and the convict in the 26/11 attack case.

Singh, who was here to inaugurate newly constructed outpost of Shashastra Seema Bal on Indo-Nepal border, said that even if clemency plea was filed, it would be disposed off at the earliest.

Replying to a separate query, the minister said that after setting up of border outposts there would be check on the anti-national forces.

Coalgate: Parliament disrupted again

Both houses of Parliament were again disrupted Friday as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) kept up the offensive and created a ruckus demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh over coal block allocation.

The Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha were adjourned till 12 noon soon after proceedings began.

Outside Parliament, the Samajwadi Party, the Telugu Desam Party and the Left parties staged a demonstration. SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav demanded a probe into the alleged corruption involving the allocation of coal blocks.

Sunita Williams takes fifth spacewalk

Indian-American astronaut Sunita Williams, who holds the record of the longest space flight (195 days) for a woman, has completed her fifth spacewalk lasting a near record eight hours and 17 minutes.

Williams and Japanese astronaut Akihiko Hoshide set out from the international space station at 5:46 p.m. Thursday (India time) and returned at 2:03 a.m. Friday, the US space agency NASA announced.

The longest spacewalk of 8 hours and 56 minutes was undertaken by US astronauts Susan Helms and James Voss in 2001.

YSR Congress’ bandh call; party leaders detained

A number of YSR Congress leaders and workers in Vijayawada and Krishna district were today detained in view of the state-wide bandh call given by the party against the Andhra Pradesh government’s “failure” to resolve power crisis.

As the YSR Congress leaders came out on streets in the early hours to allegedly obstruct the movement of buses, police foiled their attempt by taking them into custody.

At some places, the leaders entered into arguments with the police over their detention.

Devendra Kumar Joshi takes over as new Navy Chief

Admiral Devendra Kumar Joshi, an anti-submarine warfare specialist, took over as the new Navy Chief on Friday.

58-year-old Joshi succeeds Admiral Nirmal Verma who retires today.

Joshi, who was the Western Naval Commander, has taken over the force at a time when it is set to operate two aircraft carriers and induct a large number of warships, long-range surveillance aircraft and submarines. He will have a three-year tenure.

Earphone noise can damage nerve cells

Earphones or headphones on personal music players can reach noise levels similar to those of jet engines and can damage the coating of nerve cells, leading to temporary deafness, scientists from the University of Leicester have revealed.

Noises louder than 110 decibels are known to cause hearing problems such as temporary deafness and tinnitus (ringing in the ears), but the University of Leicester study is the first time the underlying cell damage has been observed.

Flu transmitted before symptoms appear: Study

Flu virus can be transmitted even before the appearance of their symptoms as experiments with ferrets (European polecat) have shown, according to a study.

If applied to human, it suggests that people pass on flu to others before they know they are infected, making it very difficult to contain epidemics.

Knowing if people are infectious before they have symptoms is important to help authorities plan for an epidemic, but it has been difficult to establish this from data collected during outbreaks, the journal Public Library of Science ONE reports.
