‘Drink green tea, kick the butt’

Drink green tea to get over the nicotine urge, say Chinese researchers — and this is a finding that medical professionals in Kerala have reacted positively to.

A recent study titled ‘A Revolutionary Approach for the Cessation of Smoking’, published in Science China Life Sciences, a peer-reviewed open-access journal, cites how researchers used custom-developed cigarettes with components of green tea as filters in a bid to treat addiction to smoking.

850-years old human skeletons found in Mexico

Mexican specialists found 15 graves with entire human skeletons estimated at more than 850-years old at an archaeological site in the central state of Queretaro, the National Anthropology and History Institute, or INAH, said.

The experts made the discovery in the archaeological area of Tancama in the Sierra Gorda mountains of Queretaro while reinforcing a structure called Building 17 of the Huastec complex.

Jorge Alberto Quiroz, who heads the excavation at Tancama, said that the skeletons were taken to the Comparative Archaeological Collections Department of INAH in Mexico City.

Heavy downpour in Delhi, traffic hit

Heavy rains lashed Delhi Saturday morning spelling chaos on city roads. The hour-long downpour in some parts of the city brought traffic to a halt and flooded roads.

While the weather office was yet to compile the statistics for the rainfall recorded, the traffic department said vehicular movement was severely hit in south and central Delhi.

“Traffic movement was slow from Defence Colony metro station to Lajpat Nagar metro station in south Delhi, on Ring Road and Andrews Ganj chowk,” said an official from Traffic helpline.

AK Hangal’s condition very critical

The condition of veteran actor AK Hangal, admitted to the Asha Parekh Hospital in Mumbai last week, is quite critical, his son said on Friday.

“Right now my father’s condition is little serious, can’t say anything. He has a breathing problem and is in ICU right now,” Vijay Hangal told IANS.

“He is in the ICU and is condition is critical,” he added.

Hangal was hospitalised following a major hip fracture.

Two cane bombs found in Aurangabad

Two powerful cane bombs planted by Maoists were found from under a culvert near Puwai village in Bihar’s Aurangabad district.

Superintendent of police Sidharth Mohan Jain said the policemen acting on a tip off detected two powerful cane bombs planted under a culvert and promptly removed from the spot.

Magadh Range Deputy Inspector General of Police N Hasnain Khan said a bomb disposal squad of Bihar Military Police has been rushed to the spot to diffuse the bombs.

Brazil company recalls 620,000 condoms

Brazilian condom manufacturer Olla is recalling 620,000 condoms from the market because of a possible defect in quality control that could compromise their security.

“The recall is a preventive measure since a possible lapse in quality has been identified that could make the product unfit for use,” Olla, one of the biggest condom manufacturers in the country, said in a communique.

The manufacturer said that the items with possible defects belong to five different lots of lubricated condoms that were distributed in promotional packs of eight for the price of six.

School teacher killed in Bihar

A school teacher was killed by unidentified persons near Kahalgaon police station area of Bhagalpur district in the early hours of Friday, police said.

Vilayati Prasad, a senior teacher of a higher secondary school was hacked to death by some unidentified persons while he was fast asleep in the school premises, the police said.

Students and locals assembled in the area and closed all the schools and colleges and sat on dharna on national highway in protest against the killing of the teacher.

Plane with 4 on board missing in Indonesia

Searchers were hunting on Saturday for a small plane missing on Borneo island with an Australian and three other people on board, Indonesian officials said.

Two rescue helicopters were flying close to the route the Piper PA-31 Navajo aircraft was taking before it lost contact with authorities last morning minutes after takeoff from an airport in the city of Samarinda on Borneo, said the airport’s chief, Rajoki Aritonang.

NATO airstrike kills 12 militants in Afghanistan

A NATO airstrike in eastern Afghanistan targeting a group of insurgents near the Pakistani border killed at least 12 militants, the international military coalition said.

Pakistani intelligence and Afghan officials said Mullah Dadullah, the self-proclaimed leader of the Pakistani Taliban in Pakistan’s Bajur tribal area, was also killed, although they offered conflicting reports on the exact location of yesterday’s strike.

National Talent Search Exam on Nov. 18

Central government has decided to conduct NTSE state level or 1st level exam only for 10th class students from the current year, contrary to earlier NTSE which held VIII class students eligible for the exam. The test will be conducted on Sunday, November 18, 2012, from 10 am to 1 pm, in Telugu, Hindi, Urdu and English media.

Students studying in any recognized school, including Kendriya Vidyalaya and schools affiliated to ICSE and CBSE New Delhi, can appear for the exam.

‘Barack Obama, Mitt Romney locked in close race’

US President Barack Obama and his Republican challenger Mitt Romney remain locked closely in the race for the White House, according to two new polls released ahead of the Republican presidential convention starting on Monday.

A CNN/ORC International poll released on Friday found Obama attracted 49 percent of likely voters to Romney’s 47 percent, within the poll’s margin of error.

On the other hand, the first poll released by Fox News showed Romney one point ahead with 45 percent to Obama’s 44 percent.

Putin warns against ignoring nationalism

While warning against ignoring nationalism, Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday said that any negative tendency in inter-ethnic relations should be dealt with promptly.

Speaking at the first session of the Presidential Council for Inter-ethnic Relations, Putin said that most conflicts originate at a local level and “this is exactly when they should and must be efficiently solved”.

The Russian President also said that he would instruct his special envoys to federal districts to pay “utmost attention” to ethnic issues.

Actor Thilakan’s condition critical

Veteran actor Thilakan, 74, is in a critical condition after suffering two heart attacks, doctors treating him here said Saturday. The actor from Kerala has been part of nearly 300 films, most of them in Malayalam.

Thilakan has been put on the ventilator.

Beginning his career in the fifties, he became famous with his 1979 film “Ulkadal”. His latest film, “Ustad Hotel”, is currently running in theatres.

The actor was in news for taking on the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes, leading to his ouster in 2010.

6 Delhi Metro stations to stay closed on Sunday

Six Metro stations in central Delhi will be closed for most of Sunday to keep protestors from reaching the homes of the Prime Minister and BJP president Nitin Gadkari.

The Delhi Police has asked the Delhi Metro to close these stations from 8 am to 6 pm: Central Secretariat, Udyog Bhawan, Patel Chowk, Race Course, Jor Bagh and Khan Market.

Bus crash kills 6, injures 27 in south Afghanistan

Authorities say a bus crash in southern Afghanistan has killed at least six people and injured 27.

The bus was travelling from the country’s far west to the southern city of Kandahar when it crashed in the province of Helmand this morning.

Provincial government spokesman Daud Ahmadi says six bodies have been recovered and that 27 people were treated for injuries. He says the cause of the crash is unknown and the driver fled the scene soon afterward.

Aarushi case: Talwars’ plea for placing DNA report dismissed

A special CBI court here on Thursday dismissed two applications of Talwars in the Aarushi-Hemraj twin murder case, seeking to place on record DNA related reports.

The court pointed out that a similar petition was dismissed earlier on August 14 on grounds that there was no need for these documents.

The court also dismissed the investigating agency’s application on “cross-examination” of senior scientist B P Mahapatra of the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) on the assurance of the defence that the cross-examination would be completed within two days.

Son stabs father during heated argument

A man was allegedly stabbed to death by his son during a heated argument in a village of this district, police said on Friday.

Hira Lal (50) was stabbed to death by his son, Budhprakash (30), with a sharp-edged weapon in Pavali village of the district.

According to police, Budhprakash got infuriated when Hiralal kicked his pregnant wife when she tried to intervene between the two during a quarrel yesterday.

Budhprakash stabbed Hiralal in the stomach, who died on the spot. A case was registered against Budhprakash today based on a complaint made by his mother Shakuntala, police said.

Mishap on Yamuna Expressway, one dead

A man was killed and three of his family members were injured when their car collided with a truck on the Yamuna Expressway, police said on Saturday.

The accident took place last night near Jewar toll plaza on the expressway when the deceased Rahul Singhal, a resident of Delhi, was returning to the national capital from Agra.

The injured were rushed to a hospital where their condition was stated to be stable.

ED slaps notices against Ramdev

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has slapped notices against yoga guru Ramdev and his two trusts for alleged violations of foreign exchange laws.

The notices, relating to alleged unaccounted payment of Rs 60 lakh, have been issued to the Divya Yog Mandir Trust and Patanjali Yog Peeth Trust.

The notices to Ramdev came just after the ED had slapped a similar notice against Ramdev’s close aide Balkrishna for being a co-director in a food processing firm which was being probed by the agency.

CM meets Sonia to discuss Jagan case fallout

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy on Friday discussed with Congress President Sonia Gandhi the issue of resignation of Buildings minister Dharmana Prasada Rao, who has been chargesheeted in the disproportionate assets case against Y S Jaganmohan Reddy.

During the meeting, Kiran is understood to have sought the High Command’s advice on dealing with the issue as Rao’s resignation has been pending with him. Rao submitted his resignation after CBI chargesheeted him in the Jagan case.
