First Test: Ashwin spins India to innings victory

Off-spinner Ravichandra Ashwin ended with match figures of 12 for 85 as Indian won the first cricket test against New Zealand by an innings and 115 runs on the fourth day at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium at Uppal here Sunday.

The visitors were all out for 164 runs in the second innings after India had enforced the follow-on. The Kiwis had scored 159 in the first innings in reply to India’s 438.

Erstwhile Team Anna members march towards PM’s residence

Supporters of erstwhile Team Anna on Sunday marched towards Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s residence, as part of their gherao protest against Congress and BJP on the coal block allocation issue.

The march started from Jantar Mantar around 1 p.m. after activists Arvind Kejriwal, Prashant Bhushan, Manish Sisodia and others addressed the protesters.

However, Kiran Bedi, who had differences over targeting BJP, was not present at Jantar Mantar exposing chinks in the team, which has decided to take a political plunge.

Anna Faris welcomes baby boy

Actress Anna Faris has given birth to her first child, a son, with husband Chris Pratt.

The 35-year-old, who tied the knot with actor Pratt in 2009, gave birth to Jack Saturday, reports showbizspy.com.

“Anna Faris and Chris Pratt are happy to announce the birth of their beautiful baby boy. He arrived earlier than expected and will be spending some time in (hospital),” said the couple’s representative.

New virus targets children

A viral illness seems to be targeting children in the US, according to a John Hopkins study.

“What we are seeing is a relatively common viral illness called hand-foot-and-mouth disease but with a new twist,” says Bernard Cohen, director of paediatric dermatology at Johns Hopkins Children’s Centre.

“Your child is seemingly in perfect health when he or she goes to bed but wakes up with high fever and bright red blisters all over the body.

Bollywood salutes A.K. Hangal

Bollywood Sunday mourned the death of the veteran A.K. Hangal, with Shabana Azmi saying that his passing away marked the end of an era.

Hangal died Sunday morning after a prolonged illness. He was 97. Celebrities took to Twitter to express their grief and sorrow. Among the reactions:

Teacher booked for molesting minor girl students

A teacher and a cleaner of a school have been booked for allegedly molesting three minor girl students, police said today.

A case under section 354 (outraging modesty) of IPC has been lodged against the teacher, Prakash Jadhav, and sweeper Parashram Basere of a backward class residential school in Balapur area of Akola for allegedly molesting three girl students, around 12-13 years of age, in July.

BCCI cash prizes for U-19 winners

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Sunday announced a cash reward of Rs.20 lakh to each player and Rs.15 lakh to every support staff after India won the Under-19 World Cup.

“Many congratulations to the Indian team for winning the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup,” BCCI president N. Srinivasan said.

“We won the ‘senior’ World Cup last year, and now our boys have triumphed in the junior version of the tournament. This is a great day for Indian cricket,” he added.

Shirish Kunder apologises to SRK

Filmmaker Shirish Kunder has finally put an end to the ongoing animosity between him and superstar Shah Rukh Khan by tweeting a public apology..

. The editor-turned-director, who is married to Shah Rukh Khan’s close friend and choreographer-director-and-now-actor Farah Khan, had created a stir last year when he took a potshot at the superstar’s mega-budget venture “RA.One” on Twitter.

“I just heard a 150 Cr firework fizzle,” Shirish Kunder had tweeted.

However, Mr Kunder has now apologised for the same in a tweet today, and says he regrets it.

12 kids majority of them girls, go missing every day in Delhi

As per the official figures of the police department, 12 kids go missing in Delhi every day, while majority of them are girls. 3171 kids went missing in Delhi during the current year till August 15, while others were found, 985 are still untraceable.

Though the figure is alarming but the police department has a reason to heave a sigh of relief. The figures are marginally less this year compared to the last year, where a total of 5111 children had gone missing and then too missing girls outnumbered boys.

Pak asks India to allow lawyers to quiz key witnesses

Pakistani authorities have sent two requests to India to allow defence lawyers to cross-examine key witnesses in the 2008 Mumbai attacks case, saying any failure to do so could allow the accused in the country to go scot-free.

In a message sent to Indian authorities through diplomatic channels on July 20, the Federal Investigation Agency asked that the defence counsel should be allowed to cross-examine surviving attacker Ajmal Kasab, chief investigation officer Ramesh Mahale, and Ganesh Dhunraj and Chintaman Mohite, the two doctors who performed the autopsies of slain attackers.

Two injured in three bomb blasts in Manipur

Two persons were injured in three grenade explosions in Manipur by suspected militants, official sources said on Sunday.

Suspected militants exploded a grenade at the residence of executive director of rural development department C Hangsing at Churachandpur last evening injuring his younger brother and his grandchild.

Hangsing and his other family members were present when the grenade exploded at around 8 pm, the sources said.

Five women, among eight killed in road accident

Eight persons including five women and a child were killed when their van rammed into a stationary truck-container in Haryana’s Sonepat district Sunday morning, police said.

Three women and two males died on the spot near Rai area in Sonepat district while the rest died on way to hospital, they said.

It appeared driver of the van, who was among the victims, had dozed off at the wheels, police added.

Kejriwal arrested, vows to protest again (Third Lead)

Anti-corruption activist Arvind Kejriwal and six others were detained here Sunday while trying to stage protests near Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s residence and two other places.

But police released them after about two hours at the Mandir Marg police station when scores of Kejriwal supporters gathered there, raising slogans against police and the government, India Against Corruption (IAC) said.

“Some of the detained people were manhandled,” an IAC spokesperon told IANS. “Police tried to take them to Bawana but Kejriwal refused to go till there was a FIR (first information report).

The victims were returning to their village after a pilgrimage near Mathura in Uttar Pradesh.

NCP threatens to disqualify Meghalaya legislators

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Sunday threatened to seek the disqualification of its 12 legislators in Meghalaya who have joined the National People’s Party (NPP).

In the 60-member assembly, the NCP has 14 legislators including suspended legislator Adolf Lu Hitler R. Marak.

Marak and Deputy Speaker Sanbor Shullai did not join the NPP, which was launched by former Lok Sabha Speaker and Purno A. Sangma.

“We are planning to appeal to the speaker (Charles Pyngrope) seeking disqualification of the 12 under the anti-defection law,” NCP’s Robert Kharshiing told IANS.

Syrian rebels set free one of 11 Lebanese pilgrims

One of 11 Lebanese pilgrims kidnapped by armed men in Syria since May has been set free, officials said.

Hussein Ali Omar, who was just freed, touched down at Beirut’s Rafik Hariri airport Saturday, Xinhua reported citing the National News Agency.

The 60-year-old Omar, who looked in good health, said: “We were treated well and the remaining 10 Lebanese are in good health. I call on the Turkish government to exert efforts to free the remaining Lebanese in Syria and I thank the Lebanese media.”

Number of Syria refugees rises to 200,000: UN

The number of refugees fleeing Syria for neighbouring nations has risen “well above” 200,000 as the violence intensifies, the UN refugee agency has said.

“There has been a dramatic increase in the number of (Syrian) refugees in the region during August, we’re now at over 200,000 refugees in the region that’s over and above our planning figure for all 2012 of 185,000 refugees in the region,” said Adrian Edwards, a spokesperson for the UNHCR.

Meanwhile, government forces have continued their assault on rebel-held areas across the country.

Students and parents who had applied for pre matric scholarship of the central government are requested to submit to printout of online registered applications, along with the necessary enclosures personally at the office of the executive director State Minority Finance Corporation, 6th floor Hajj House through their respective educational institutions.

School headmasters are also requested to submit applications of the students with required certification on or before August 30 at the above said address.

Applications received after the last date will not be considered for the scheme.
