Woman with child climb water tank due to denial of justice

Officials heaved a sigh of relief after a woman who had threatened to jump off a water tank, came down after a request made by the local MLA.

A married woman Uppalapati Ramatulasi (22) along with her one-year-old kid and aged mother today climbed an overhead water tank at Shanthinagar in Kakinada here today.

She had threatened to jump off the tank if justice was not rendered by re-uniting her with her husband Kuncherla
Srikanth Kumar, who allegedly disowned her for giving birth to a girl child.

AP CM greets people on Telugu language day

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy today conveyed his wishes to Telugu people all over the world on the eve of ‘Telugu Language Day’.

The birth anniversary of late Gidugu Ramamurthy, who campaigned for simplifying Telugu, is celebrated as the ‘Telugu Language Day’ (August 29) every year.

AP power crisis: TDP holds protests at state assembly

Stepping up their campaign on ongoing power crisis in Andhra Pradesh, the main opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) today held a protest on the premises of state assembly here.

The TDP legislators sought to organise the protest at the Gandhi statue on the assembly premises, but were prevented from doing so following which irate TDP MLC N Rajakumari went atop the assembly building but came down following persuasion by the officials.

TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu has alleged hat Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh had abetted the plunder of coal from mines of the country.

DGP probing ASP’s charges against SP: Sabita

The Director-General of Police is investigating into the charges leveled by IPS officer and additional SP of Police, Rampachodavaram, in East Godavari District, against the Superintendent of Police, Trivikrama Varma.

Chandrababu wants UPA government to quit over CAG report

Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief N. Chandrababu Naidu Tuesday said the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government had lost moral authority to continue in office in the wake of the CAG report on allotment of coal blocks.

The former Andhra Pradesh chief minister demanded Prime Minister Manmohan Singh immediately cancel the allotment of coal blocks and order a comprehensive probe into the whole issue.

In the wild party 14 arrested

A VIP’s party turned into a disaster after police raided his posh private villa and arrested 14 young women in Kuwait.

According to reports in the Kuwaiti papers, the police described the party as wild and the participants as party animals.

The unnamed VIP, along with several intoxicated friends, was said to have also been arrested and was found with immodestly dressed girls .

Police said they are using alcohol in the party also.

One killed in fresh violence in Assam, Mamata ‘will protect refugees’

West Bengal would shelter those fleeing the riots in Assam and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s attention has been drawn to the violence in the neighbouring state, chief minister Mamata Banerjee said.

Stating that many people had crossed over to the state, Banerjee said “We will protect them and care for them. They are our guests.

“I spoke to Prime Minister at the UPA coordination committee meeting,” Banerjee said at the foundation day programme of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad.

CM Confident Of Solving Power Crisis Soon

Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Tuesday exuded confidence that the ongoing power crisis would be solved soon as there was only a 20 per cent shortage of power in the State.

Speaking at a function organised in Ravindra Bharathi in connection with “Rajiv Gandhi Akshay Urja Diwas” (Renewable Energy Day), the Chief Minister said power generation has come down by 50 million units due to inadequate rainfall and non-availability of gas. The government was addressing the issue and giving power subsidy to the tune of Rs 5,000 crore, he added.

Manmohan Singh leaves for Tehran

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh left Tuesday for Tehran on a four-day visit during which he will attend the 16th summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and hold a bilateral meeting with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Meetings are also planned with Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as also with the leaders of Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Egypt.

The visit takes place amid mounting pressure from the West on Iran over its nuclear programme.

The world will be closely watching when Manmohan Singh meets Ahmadinejad Wednesday.

TDP MLAs protest in assembly premises over power crisis

High political drama was witnessed in the premises of State Legislative Assembly on Tuesday when the Telugu Desam Party legislators tried to stage dharna over the issue of power crisis.

After holding a meeting of the Telugu Desam Legislature Party, about 35 TDP MLAs and MLCs tried to stage dharna before the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in the assembly premises. However, the legislators were prevented by the security personnel from going towards the Gandhi statue. Agitated over the denial of permission, the TDP MLAs staged a sit-in protest before the TDLP office itself.

CLP asks TDP MLAs to apologise for staging protest at CMO

The Congress Legislature Party on Tuesday asked the Telugu Desam Party MLAs to apologies to the people for staging dharna at the Chief Minister’s Office over the energy crisis.

Addressing a press conference at the CLP office, Government Chief Whip Gandra Venkataramana Reddy accused the TDP MLAs of enacting political drama over a public issue. He alleged that the TDP MLAs have misused the CMO to stage protest which was aimed at drawing maximum publicity in the media. Therefore, he said that the TDP should apologise to the people for their behaviour.

Bedi fires salvo at Kejriwal, wants Anna to step in

In a veiled attack on Arvind Kejriwal, activist Kiran Bedi on Tuesday said erstwhile Team Anna has become “suspect” in its programme after a few chose the political route and suggested that Anna Hazare step in to provide direction.

Shahid Kapoor opts out of YRF film

Shahid Kapoor has pulled out of a Yash Raj Films (YRF) project as his packed schedule is not allowing him to accommodate changes in creative aspects of the movie to be directed by Maneesh Sharma.

The film was originally scheduled to go on floor this September. Shahid couldn`t manage dates for the film, which has now been postponed.

Both Sharma and Jaideep Sahni, who has written the story and screenplay, along with Aditya Chopra have taken a creative decision to include lip-sync songs, which were earlier not part of the film.

UN Chief shocked at killings in Syria, calls for probe

Expressing shock over the killing of hundreds of civilians in the Syrian town of Daraya, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has sought an immediate investigation into the “appalling and brutal crime.”

“The Secretary-General is certainly shocked by (the killings) and he strongly condemns this appalling and brutal crime,” Ban’s spokesperson Martin Nesirky told reporters at UN Headquarters here yesterday.

“It must be investigated immediately in an independent and impartial manner, and those responsible for perpetrating this crime must be held accountable.”
