Don’t politicise problems of physically disabled persons: Minister

Minister for Women Development and Disabled Welfare V Sunitha Laxma Reddy on Tuesday asked the leaders not to politicise the problems of physically challenged.

Talking to media persons at the State Secretariat, she came down heavily on the political leaders for politicising the problems of physically challenged to get mileage on their issue. Appealing to political parties to extend support to the State Government for their cause, she asked them to bring the problems of differently-abled people to the notice of government instead of politicising them.

Stop all settlement activities: India asks Israel

India today asked Israel to stop all settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territories and emphasised that it supports a negotiated solution resulting in a “sovereign, independent, viable and united state of Palestine”.

“The Palestinian cause is of paramount importance to India. In fact, India was the first non-Arab country to recognise the state of Palestine on November 16, 1988, pursuant to the Algiers Declaration of November, 15 1988,” External Affairs Minister S M Krishna said today.

Global business meet for Indian diaspora

A global business meet to provide a platform to the Indian diaspora will be held in New York next month by New Global Indian Foundation (NGIF), a representative said here Tuesday.

“For the first time, global Indian leaders will be coming together from sectors as varied as business, spiritual, politics, think-tanks, among others, to discuss global business,” said Kanchan Banerjee, chairman of NGIF and convener of Global Indian Business Meet (GIBM) 2012.

Red Cross to resume operations in Pak at reduced scale

The Red Cross today said its operations in Pakistan will resume at a “reduced scale” following a review undertaken after the brutal murder of a British aid worker in the restive Balochistan province.

Following a thorough review of its activities, the International Committee has “reiterated its commitment to
carry on with its work in Pakistan but on a reduced scale”, said a statement from the organisation.

The ICRC has decided to terminate all activities for people affected by the current unrest in Balochistan,
Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and the tribal areas.

Being part of ‘Heroine’ was my destiny: Kareena

Actress Kareena Kapoor feels she was destined to do director Madhur Bhandarkar’s “Heroine” and says the film is very close to her heart.

Bhandarkar first offered the lead role to Kareena but she couldn’t do it due to date issues and it went to Aishwarya Rai. However, Aishwarya subsequently opted out due to pregnancy.

‘Chhaiya Chhaiya’ makes Malaika nostalgic

Model-actress Malaika Arora, who made a mark in Bollywood with her hit item number “Chhaiya Chhaiya” in the 1998 film “Dil Se”, gets nostalgic at the mere mention of the song.

“Nostalgic! I still remember that shoot, I still remember every step, every moment and it just makes me smile,” the 39-year-old said here Monday at a dance academy.

She has done quite a few item numbers so far. When asked about her personal favourite, she said: “I would definitely say ‘Munni’ (from ‘Dabangg’) because it was our film.”

Her current favourite is Kareena Kapoor’s item song in “Heroine”.

Police intervenes in Pakistani MP’s route

Police intervened in the route of a Pakistani MP, who was scheduled to leave for Wagah border by road, as it included a restricted place in the district.

Pakistani MP Abdus Sattar had arrived here on Sunday evening and after meeting a member of erstwhile royal family
and others, he was scheduled to leave for Wagah border yesterday, police said.

His route included Naachna area for which visitors are required to take separate permission from Jaisalmer district
administration and the same was communicated to him, SHO Naachna, Gautam Dodasara, said today.

Dominican woman uses her body for advertising

(IANS/EFE) Dominican-born Margarita Dominguez has transformed her body and those of a score of young people who work for her company into advertising billboards with the help of body painting and artist Fernello.

Dominguez, who moved to New York with her parents as a child, two years ago founded World of Margarita, a company that offers advertisers Walking Bill-bods.

“People really like it. They take photos of me. I think it’s a good idea to promote a product,” Dominguez, who goes to the gym two hours a day to keep herself in shape, told EFE.

Israel among top arms exporters in world: Report

Israel is one of the top exporters of weapons, with sales worth $12.9 billion between 2004 and 2011, according to a newly-released American report examining global arms’ transfers.

According to the report, Israel is not only one of the world’s top arms exporters but also one of the biggest buyers, and it exports weapons mainly to developing countries.

The report titled Conventional Arms Transfers to Developing Nations prepared by the Congressional Research Service (CRS), reported Xinhua citing the Globes economic daily.

Woman suicide bomber kills six in Russia

A woman suicide bomber killed six people in Russia’s southwestern Dagestan region Tuesday, according to local officials.

The attack was carried out in the village of Chirkey, killed a religious scholar and his five followers, Xinhua quoted a spokesperson of the local Investigation Committee as telling reporters.

A spokesperson of the Dagestan Interior Ministry confirmed the toll and identified the scholar as Sheikh Said Afandi.

India U-19 cricket team gets heroes welcome

The triumphant U-19 Indian cricket team arrived home to a euphoric reception here Tuesday afternoon.

As Delhi boy and skipper Unmukt Chand, who hit a match-winning unbeaten century in the final against Australia, came out of the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport terminal here, holding the trophy, celebrations broke out.

Local Harmeet Singh’s relatives and friends also turned up in large numbers and carried a huge cutout of the spinner.

Assam bandh turns violent, one killed

Tension gripped many parts of Assam, including the troubled Bodoland Territorial Areas Districts (BTAD), following fresh incidents of violence Tuesday in which at least one person was killed and six people were injured.

A 12-hour dawn-to-dusk Assam bandh called by the All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) and other groups under the banner of the United Movement for Peoples’ Rights also added to the tension.

The bandh was called to demand scrapping of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) that runs the administration in four districts of BTAD.

Indian PM arrives in Tehran for NAM summit

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh arrived here Tuesday on a four-day visit during which he will attend the 16th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and hold a bilateral meeting with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Geetika case politically motivated, Kanda tells court

IANS) Gopal Goyal Kanda, accused of abetting the suicide of his employee and former flight attendant Geetika Sharma, told a court here Tuesday that the case against him was politically motivated. He was sent to 14 days judicial custody.

Metropolitan Magistrate Devender Kumar Jangala sent the former Haryana minister to judicial custody after the end of his interrogation in police custody.

“The accused is remanded to judicial custody till Sep 11,” the court said.

Cash-for-bail scam: HC dismisses bail plea of suspended judge

The Andhra Pradesh High Court on Tuesday dismissed the bail petition of suspended judge D Prabhakar Rao who was arrested for his alleged role in the cash-for-bail scam involving former Karnataka minister Gali Janardhan Reddy.

Justice Govinda Rajulu denied the relief to Rao observing that he had moved the bail application before the expiry of stipulated 60-day period (since arrest) and hence can not seek the benefit under section 167 of CrPC.

On completion of the 60-day period, the petitioner is entitled for bail as a matter of right, he pointed out.

Youth strangles to death wife for selling taxi

A youth allegedly strangled to death his wife ina fit of rage after she sold his taxi in north-east Delhi, police said.

The incident was reported from GTB Enclave and the victim has been identified as Aarti (22).

Vasudev Dubey surrendered before police after allegedly strangling to death his wife.

He told police that he strangled his wife in a fit of anger after he came to know that she sold his taxi while he
was visiting Uttar Pradesh, a senior police official said.

SDPI demands parliamentary probe into Assam violence

The National Working Committee, (NWC), of Social Democratic Party of India, (SDPI), in a resolution at its Bangalore meeting on August 26 while condemning the violence in Assam has demanded a parliamentary probe into the perennial violence to identify the forces or groups responsible for the communal violence. It demanded to recommend measures to remove the communal virus as well as the role of the agencies of the government as well as the state government.

Assembly passes Odisha Industrial Security Force Bill, 2012

With rapid industrialisation in the state and security threats to certain units, the Assembly today passed the Odisha Industrial Security Force Bill, 2012 for establishment of a specialised force.

The Bill, introduced by housing and urban development minister Raghunath Mohanty on behalf of Chief Minister Naveen
Patnaik, was passed without any debate through voice vote amidst uproar by opposition Congress members.

Odisha Industrial Security Force will provide adequate and foolproof security to industrial units,” Mohanty
said in his statement of objects and reasons for the Bill.

The militant was shot dead when a band of extremists fired at police commandos carrying out search operation in the
area this afternoon.

One 9mm pishtol with some ammunition and one handgrenade were recovered from the, sources said.

A man today allegedly attempted suicide by jumping before a train at a station in east Delhi.

The man, whose identity is yet to be ascertained, jumped before the train at the Dilshad Garden station this morning,
sources said.

He was rushed to a hospital.
