9 year-old boy kidnapped in Bhilwara

A nine-year-old son of an engineer of Public Works Department has been allegedly kidnapped for ransom, police said on Wednesday.

The kidnappers called on the mobile of Bhimrao Pinjare and demanded Rs 50 lakh as ransom last night, SP Nitindeep said.

The boy was playing in Shivaji Park near his house in the evening, but he did not return till late after which his father filed a complaint at Subhash Nagar police station.

Two teams have been dispatched to Chittorgarh as police suspect that the call was made from that town, the SP added.

Rajesh Khanna didn’t leave a penny for wife Dimple

They married in 1973 and separated in 1984 but Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia never formally divorced. They often appeared together in public with daughters Twinkle and Rinke, and Dimple nursed the late superstar through his long illness, to which he succumbed on July 18.

After his death, Dimple arranged for and took part in all the last rites, including immersing Mr Khanna’s ashes in the river Ganges at Haridwar.

ISI chief arrives in US to hold talks with Petraeus

Pakistan’s ISI chief Lt Gen Zaheer-ul-Islam on Wednesday arrived in Washington on his maiden visit to the US as the spy agency head to hold crucial talks with his CIA counterpart Gen (rtd) David Petraeus. Islam is scheduled to hold his first official meeting with Petraeus later on Wednesday.

Islam is expected to raise the issue of opposition of continued drone strikes by the US in the tribal areas of the country, and the recent increasing incidents of alleged crossing over of terrorist based in Afghanistan.

The CIA refused to comment on the meeting between the two intelligence chiefs.

Syria ‘needs $ 500 million aid’

Syria rebels overrun Aleppo police stations, kill 40

Syrian rebels on Tuesday attacked key military targets and overran two police stations in Aleppo, killing 40 officers, a watchdog said, as the pivotal battle for the commercial capital raged today.

Clashes between the rebels and loyalists of President Bashar al-Assad were also reported in the capital Damascus, the eastern city of Deir Ezzor and Daraa in the south, cradle of the more than 16-month uprising.

Illegal mining:Karnataka government suspends 40 officials

The Karnataka government has suspended 40 officials and staff and issued show-cause notices to 257 who have been named by Lokayukta reports in illegal mining in Karnataka, Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar said on Tuesday.

Responding to a question by Tanveer Sait of the Congress in the Legislative Assembly, he said that as per the recommendations in those reports, 66 officials and staff have been transferred from Bellary district.

Pak police registers case against top ISI and MI officials

Pakistani police have registered a case against the Directors General and Deputy Directors of the ISI and Military Intelligence on the charge of kidnapping a member of a banned group, according to a media report today.

This is first case in the country’s history to be registered against senior military officers serving in intelligence agencies, The News daily reported. The case regarding the kidnapping of Hizb-ut-Tahrir spokesman Naveed Butt was registered by his wife Saadia Rahat at Liaquatabad police station in Lahore on June 26.

Woman-son charred to death in Visakhapatnam

A woman and her son were charred to death when their thatched hut caught fire while they were asleep in D Survaram village of Madugula mandal in the district last night, police said today.

The victims were identified as Nagamani (36) and Sivakumar (11). The cause of the mishap was being investigated, police said.

However, the villagers suspected foul play and alleged involvement of Nagamani’s husband, who has been living elsewhere with his second wife, police added.

The Andhra Pradesh government Tuesday announced a cash award of Rs.50 lakh for ace shooter Gagan Narang, who bagged a bronze medal at the London Olympics.

Narang Monday won the men’s 10 meter air rifle event, giving India its first medal at the London Olympics.

Woman jumps off Delhi flyover

A 25-year-old woman was in a critical condition after she attempted to commit suicide by jumping off a flyover on Tuesday evening, police said.

Geeta, resident of west Delhi’s Dwarka, jumped from Dwarka flyover around 5.30 p.m.

“She was taken to a nearby hospital where her condition is stated to be critical. No suicide note was recovered from the spot. Police are yet to ascertain the exact reason behind her decision to take the extreme step,” said a police officer.

Rain brings relief for power-hit North

Rains inundated most parts of North India keeping temperatures in the region below normal even as water level in Sharda and Ghaghra rivers in Uttar Pradesh breached the danger mark.

Heavy rains proved to be a boon for Delhiites on Tuesday who were suffering from the power outage due to collapse of Northern grid.

The minimum temperature was recorded at 25.4 degree Celsius, one degree below normal.

The rain gauges at the Safdurjung MeT station measured 9.5 mm of showers for a period of 24 hours till 8:30 am while Palam station recorded 56.8 mm during the same period.
