Refugees returning home in Assam

People have begun returning home from refugee camps after improvement in the situation in Assam’s BTAD and Dhubri districts, where clashes between Bodos and minority immigrants left 56 dead last month.

“The situation is improving fast with people beginning to return home,” Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said here on Wednesday. “We have fixed August 15 as the date by when the people will be sent home from relief camps,” Gogoi said.

Sensex up for the third day, rises 38 points

A benchmark index of Indian equities markets rose for the third day Wednesday and was trading around 38 points up in afternoon trade.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 17,244.44 points, was ruling at 17,274.12 points, 0.22 percent or 37.94 points up from its previous day’s close at 17,236.18 points.

The BSE realty index was up 21.96 points, followed by capital goods, up 98.68 points and health care, up 68.63 points.

The wider 50-scrip S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange was ruling 0.28 percent up at 5,243.40 points.

7 killed, 25 hurt as vehicles fall into Alaknanda River

Seven pilgrims were killed and 25 others injured in two separate road accidents in Chamoli district, official sources said today.

Two pilgrims from Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh were today killed and eight others injured when their car fell into Alaknanda river at Pipalkoti area of Chamoli district, they said.

The incident occurred when they were returning after offering prayers at Badrinath shrine, they said. The injured have been admitted to district hospital in Chamoli where their condition is stated to be stable. The cause of the accident was not immediately known.

Hazare’s fast enters 4th day, Team Anna hold discussions

With government showing no inclination for talks to end their stir, a worried Team Anna today held discussions among themselves on the way ahead even as the health of fasting Arvind Kejriwal and Gopal Rai worsened.

The team held two rounds of talks at the protest site of Jantar Mantar, where Anna Hazare’s fast entered the fourth day and that of Kejriwal, Rai and Manish Sisodia entered the eighth day.

After being advised hospitalisation, Kejriwal had yesterday warned the government against using force to remove him and his associates from the protest site.

Teenage girl commits suicide

A 17-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide after her aunt scolded her for talking on mobile phone, police said on Tuesday.

Mamta Paneru, a Class XII student, was found hanging from a ceiling fan at her room last evening when her relatives returned from work.

Paneru, a resident of Haldwani town, was living with her aunt as she was pursuing her studies here. She was scolded by her aunt for talking on mobile phone yesterday, they said.

16 killed, 19 injured as bus falls into ditch

Sixteen passengers were killed and 19 others injured when their bus fell into a ditch at Chakrata area on Weddnesday.

The accident occurred when the bus, carrying a total of 47 passengers, was coming to Vikasnagar from Hanol, official sources said.

The vehicle skidded off the road and fell into the ditch, they said. Sixteen bodies have so far been recovered from the ditch. The injured are being rushed to various hospitals of the area.

Madurai police arrested a doctor who allegedly raped a school girl, who came to him for treatment. A 16-year-old girl lodged a complaint with the police that the doctor sexually assaulted her when she visited him at a private hospital yesterday. Senior Pak Taliban commander killed in gunbattle

A senior Pakistani Taliban commander was killed in recent clashes with security forces in the Dir region bordering Afghanistan, media reports said on Wednesday.

Taliban commander Mullah Mansoor was killed in a gun battle with security forces, state-run Radio Pakistan quoted official sources as saying.

Other media reports said Mansoor succumbed to injuries sustained during a clash between security forces and militants in Dir region of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, which has witnessed cross-border attacks by Pakistani Taliban fighters based in Afghanistan.

Maruti Suzuki sales rise 9.2% in July, weakest in 9 months

The lockout at its Manesar plant notwithstanding, the country’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India on Wednesday reported 9.2 percent increase in sales for July at 82,234 units as against 75,300 units in the same month last year.

The company said its domestic sales during the month stood at 71,024 units, compared to 66,504 units in July last year, up 6.8 percent.

The sales were driven mostly by its compact sedan Dzire, which clocked 11,413 units posting nearly four-fold increase.

According to police, the accused Y S Yadav, 51, Pujari, M. Sreenu, 24 and Y Pradeep Yadav, 24, attacked Javoji Shekar Yadav, 34, at around 12.30 pm when he was going to the court. Further investigations are on.
