Telangana Congress MPs called on new Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde here on Tuesday.

Speaking to the media later, MPs Ponnam Prabhakar, Rajaiah and Suresh Shetkar said that they just met Shinde as a matter of courtesy and had not discussed any political issues with him.

As Shinde has taken over as the new Home Minister from Chidambaram, who was shifted to the Finance Ministry again, it would be Shinde who would be handling the Telangana issue henceforth. It is in this context that the Telangana Congress MPs met Shinde.

Yanamala Wants Congress To Apologise To BCs

Rajasthan government declares five districts scarcity-hit

The Rajasthan government on Wednesday declared five districts scarcity-hit in view of deficient rainfall.

At a meeting of the State Disaster Management Authority, chaired by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, Jodhpur, Barmer, Jaisalmer, Bikaner and Nagaur, were declared such.

Mr Gehlot directed to issue a notification in this regard, an official said.

He authorised district collectors to carry out the process for preparing ‘girdawri’ report in advance so as to assess the drought.

Woman lynched for practicing ‘witchcraft’

A 65-year-old woman was branded a witch and lynched in a Bihar village Wednesday, police said.

Payari Devi, a Dalit, was beaten to death in Jehanabad district’s Shevenan village, about 50 km from here, police said.

People turned on her after the death of a man called Ashok Manjhi. Four people have been arrested.

The practice of branding women as witches and torturing them – often to death – continues unabated in remote rural areas of Bihar. A month ago, a woman in Sitamarhi district was forced by some people to eat human excreta after they branded her a witch.

Mulayam unhappy with UP govt’s performance: Akhilesh

Accepting that government’s functioning was not up to the mark so far, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav today admitted that Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav was angry over the working of the government. “He (Mulayam Singh Yadav) is the head of the family. Power grid collapse an administrative failure: BJP

The BJP today held the Centre responsible for power grid collapse for two consecutive days, asserting the grid failure is a result of “negligence, incompetence and complete abdication of duty” on the part of the government.

SBI cuts interest rate on home, car loans by up to 0.5%

State Bank of India on Wednesday slashed lending rates on car and home loans by up to 0.5 percent, a day after one percent cut in SLR by the Reserve Bank.

SBI has reduced interest rate on home loans of up to Rs 30 lakh to 10.25 percent from existing 10.50 percent (after 0.25 percent concession over the card rate), a senior bank official said.

On the home loans of beyond Rs 30 lakh but less than Rs 75 lakh, the new rate will be 10.40 percent against the existing 10.75 percent, down 0.35 percent.

The new rates will be effective from August 7, the official added.

‘Government should not take Anna stir lightly’

Asserting that public support was still with Anna Hazare, former Karnataka lokayukta N. Santosh Hedge Wednesday said it would be wrong on the part of the government to take the anti-graft movement lightly as the head count in the protest has fallen since last year.

“I have read some of the sarcastic statements of some of the ministers in the newspapers. It seems that they have taken this anti-corruption movement very lightly as the common people rallying at the protest programme have come down since last year,” Hedge said, on the sidelines of a CII seminar.

Town Planning Supervisor in ACB net

Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials have arrested a government official on the charges of bribe.

In a release, the ACB here said today Nampally Rajendra Prasad (54), Town Planning Supervisor, Municipal Office, Khammam was caught red-handed by the ACB officials late last night at his office when he demanded and accepted Rs 8,000 as bribe from the complainant for issue permission for house construction.

23 injured in Lahore blasts

At least 23 people were injured in eastern Pakistan’s Lahore city Wednesday night when two bombs went off at a market, police said.

The blasts took place around 10.00 p.m. at a fruit market in the city’s Badami Bagh area, Xinhua quoted the local Urdu channel Geo TV as saying.

The bombs were detonated through a remote controlled device.

The injured were shifted to the city’s Meo Hospital.

US manufacturing sector contracts in July

The US manufacturing sector shrank for the second consecutive month in July, a survey showed Wednesday.

The US Institute of Supply Management (ISM) manufacturing index, also known as the purchasing managers index (PMI), stood at 49.8 percent in July, slightly higher than the estimate of 49.7 percent in June, Xinhua reported.

A reading above 50 percent indicates that the manufacturing sector is generally expanding, while a reading below that ratio indicates contraction.

SWB decides to recommend NWB diversion of forest land for TTD

The State Wildlife Board (SWB) today decided to recommend to the National Wildlife Board diversion of 0.55 hectares of forest land in Tirumala Reserve Forest of Sri Venkateshwara Wildlife Sanctuary for laying of additional pipeline from Papavinasanam Dam to Forest Checkpost, Tirumala by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) for drinking water purpose of the pilgrims at Tirumala hills. The decision was taken at the 5th State Wildlife Board met under the Chairmanship of Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy at Secretariat here, an official release here said.

ISAF commander to visit Pakistan Thursday

Commander of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan Gen John Allen will arrive here Thursday in an one-day official visit.

The top commander will discuss “border coordination matters” with Pakistani Army chief Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, Xinhua reported.

The visit comes at a time when tension between Pakistan and Afghanistan has reached a peak over cross-border attacks.

Afghanistan accuses Pakistani security forces of firing rockets into its territory, while Islamabad criticises Kabul for failing to stop cross-border militant attacks.
