US lauds India`s role in eradicating polio

The US appreciates India`s role in eradicating polio and the joint effort by both the countries towards ensuring child survival, US representative to the United Nations Susan Rice said here Tuesday.

“I appreciate India`s role in eradicating polio,” Rice said at the US embassy here to highlight the Call For Action initiative against child mortality led by India, Ethiopia and the US.

The Call For Action is a commitment by the countries to try and stop deaths of children below five years of age.

19 killed in Taliban attack on Pak check post

Heavily-armed Taliban militants attacked a check post in Pakistan’s lawless tribal belt killing at least nine soldiers and losing 10 of their own men, security officials said today.

Fighting erupted in South Waziristan tribal region after militants attacked the check post at Farhang Baba area, the officials were quoted as saying by TV news channels.

Nine soldiers were killed and several others injured in the attack. The security forces launched a counter-attack and killed 10 militants, a security official said.

Syrian opposition asks US to introduce no-fly zone

The opposition Syrian Support Group has called on the US to immediately establish a no-fly zone over Syria.

The group, which represents the rebel Free Syrian Army in Washington, claimed that Syria’s ruling authorities have intensified use of air strikes to attack cities held by rebels.

Louay Sakka, co-founder of the Syrian Support Group, said: “This is right now the time for a no-fly zone to take place. We need to stop the fixed-wing and helicopters from attacking. The regime cannot hold ground without air power or heavy artillery.”

Was Zubaida killed for money, not ‘honour’?

Despite the preliminary confession of three persons that they killed their sister Zubaida to save the “honour” of the family, investigators continue to probe the possibility that money was the motive behind the murder.

Police arrested Mushtaq Ahmad Dar and his sisters Nasreen and Misra following the discovery of 20-year-old Zubaida’s body in the fields outside their Shoolipora village in Budgam district Aug 24.

Man brutally murdered

(Siasat News): a man was brutally murdered in the outskirts of the city Kesara. According to the police, some unidentified persons crushed the head of one Venkatesh with a heavy boulder at Damaiguda.

The deceased was a mason and was missing since last three days. Missing complaint was lodged in Kesara police station.

He was the resident of Nagarjuna Nagar colony in Kushaiguda and said to be a native of Kurnool. Police has registered a case.

Water level in reservoirs not satisfactory-cuts in water supply likely

(Siasat News)After facing the load shedding of electricity, the residents of the city of Hyderabad may have to suffer the shortage of drinking water in the near future.

Due to insufficient rainfall in the neighboring states of Maharashtra and Karnataka, the reservoirs are not getting sufficient quantity of water deposited in them.

Gunfight between security forces, guerrillas in Kashmir

A gunfight between security forces and separatist guerrillas started Wednesday morning in a Kashmir village, police said.

“Troops of Rashtriya Rifles and Jammu and Kashmir Police surrounded a house in Lamer village in Kupwara following information about the presence of militants,” a police officer told IANS.

Reports said exchange of automatic gunfire had started although there was no official word about the number of guerrillas hiding in the village, 82 km from here.
