HC grants bail to Koneru Prasad in Emaar case

The High Court on Thursday granted conditional bail to Trimex Chairman Koneru Rajendra Prasad in the Emaar Properties scam.While sanctioning bail to Koneru Prasad, the Court directed him to furnish a surety bond of Rs 5 lakh. The court also asked Koneru Prasad not to leave the state without informing the probing agency.

Mystery continues to shroud the death of Infosys employee and software professional Neelima who jumped to her death under mysterious circumstances on Tuesday.Postmortem of the girl who has come back to India only a few days before allegedly committing suicide was completed on Thursday. Doctors who performed the postmortem have found deep injuries on her body. They have filmed the postmortem process in view of the mystery surrounding Neelima’s death. Doctors said they had samples for analysis to the forensic laboratory.

4 Africans arrested in drug, Cocaine and Credit card fraud

The Police of Osmania University Police Station nabbed four African nationals for possessing contraband narcotic drug Cocaine and for involving in Credit card fraud .

The arrested accused were Patrick Emario(29)) Rosita Miriam Thangavalu(22), Samuel Kings Hedion(40) and Liatu Baraya Yelmi(28).

Kofi Annan resigns as UN-Arab League envoy for Syria

United Nations and Arab League envoy Kofi Annan has resigned from his post as international envoy for Syria after trying in vain for six months to broker peace and bring the country’s warring parties to the table.

Annan’s resignation was announced by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who expressed “deep regret” on Annan’s decision to step down as the international envoy.

“Annan has informed me, and the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Nabil El Araby, of his intention not to renew his mandate when it expires on August 31, 2012,” Ban said in a statement here.

British mother jailed after son drowns in bathtub

A drunk mother, who left her two young children alone in a bath full of water and remained engrossed in talking with neighbours while one of her kids drowned, was jailed in Britain Tuesday.

Danielle Reeves had left her sons unattended in the bath for up to 45 minutes after “getting pissed” on vodka, The Sun reported.

On discovering her 11-month-old Frankie Joe under water, she took him to neighbours and cooked up a story that he had had a fit.

She told the medical staff of having turned her back just “for a couple of minutes” when the incident happened.

90 percent jilted lovers spy on ex on Facebook

Around 90 of lovers spy on photos and status messages of their former boyfriends or girlfriends on popular social networking website Facebook, a study has found.

According to a Master’s thesis written by 25-year-old Veronika Lukacs, a student at University of Western Ontario in Canada, 88 percent of people checked out friends’ accounts to spy on the person who dumped them, the Daily Mail reported.

Jilted lovers deleted photos that reminded them of happier times, read long-forgotten wall posts and scrutinised their potential replacement.

‘Prohibited bore guns given to 18 MPs booked for crimes’

Eighteen of the 82 parliamentarians given licences of prohibited bore guns between 2001-12 had criminal charges pending against them, a study has said, hinting at criminalisation of Indian politics.

The 18 MPs were facing cases like murder, attempt to murder and kidnapping at the time the weapons were sold to them.

“The study shows the extent to which our politics has become criminalised…we need to take immediate steps to root out criminals from politics,” Anil Bairwal of NGOs Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and National Election Watch, which conducted the study, told IANS.

Gay Italian politician to run for PM in 2013

An openly homosexual politician in Italy has announced his candidacy for prime ministership in the elections to be held in 2013, in what could pave the way for the European Union’s first gay premier.

Nichi Vendola, governor of the southern Puglia region and leader of the Sel party, that stands for “Left and Free”, announced his candidacy Wednesday.

Vendola may face three-time prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, who resigned in November amid a deepening debt crisis and sex charges.

“It’s time for change,” Vendola said.

Corpses end up on street near Russia morgue

An investigation has been launched in northwest Russia’s Leningrad region after several bodies were found lying in the street near a hospital, police said Thursday.

An inquiry established that several bodies were “temporarily” put on the street near the hospital in Lug city because the local morgue “lacked space”.

Morgue managers said they were “overwhelmed with work”, were short of hands and simply had no time to take the bodies inside. They later rectified the situation.

Facebook has more than 83 mn fake users

Social network Facebook has said there are now more than 83 million fake users on the website, BBC reported Thursday.

The company said 8.7 percent of its 955 million active users might not be real.

Duplicate profiles made up 4.8 percent of the users while 1.5 percent of users were described as “undesirable”.

In total, the company said it estimated there were 83.09 million fake users, which it classified in three groups.

The largest group of “fakes” were duplicates, which the company defined as “an account that a user maintains in addition to his or her principal account”.

Akhilesh not serious on scam probe: BJP

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Thursday launched a broadside against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, accusing him of giving conflicting statements on an alleged multi-crore rupee scam related to farm houses in Noida.

The scandal allegedly involved allotment of farm houses to influential people on land belonging to the irrigation department.

Akhilesh Yadav of the Samajwadi Party (SP) told IANS that the government was serious in punishing all the scamsters.

Delhi resident among three killed in UP road mishaps

Three persons, including a Delhi resident, were killed in separate road accidents in Tundla area of the district today.

Police said Dilip (45), a resident of a colony under R.K Puram police station in Delhi, was killed and another injured when their car met with an accident on way to Firozabad.

In the other accident, Gopi Ram (38) was killed when his tempo overturned near Hazratpur area, police said.

In the third incident, Rinku (21) was killed when his three-wheeler was hit by a vehicle near Usayni area.

Robbers drive away with copper plates worth over Rs 2 crore

A gang of highway robbers decamped with two trailers loaded with copper plates worth Rs 2.27 crore, dispatched from Sterlite factory and bound for JNPT port near Mumbai, at Nalla-Sopara in the district last night.

Inspector Mukund Mahajan of the Nalla-Sopara police station said the trailers contained total of 45 tonnes of
copper plates, and had been sent from Silvassa factory.

When the trailers were passing through the forested area near Nalla Sopara along the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway, a group of six men intercepted them, and drove them off after assaulting the drivers.

Gold and pistol stolen from police official’s house

Gold valuables and a semi-automatic pistol totally valued at Rs 1.83 lakh were allegedly robbed from a senior crime branch officer’s house while he and his family members were away, police sources said here today.

Assistant Police Commissioner (Crime Branch) Ravindra Khandagale left for duty in the morning yesterday from his
house in Kamala Park building at Mahim. Later, his wife and son also left the house at 10.30 am, police said.

His family members returned in the evening, only to find the door’s latch lock broken and the house ransacked.

DRI seizes fake mobile parts worth Rs 60 lakh

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has claimed to have busted an international syndicate involved in smuggling of fake mobile handsets and seized phone parts worth Rs 60 lakh.

Acting on intelligence inputs, the Delhi Zonal unit of DRI late last month seized a consignment sourced from China containing fake mobile spare parts of companies like Blackberry, HTC, Samsung, etc from Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport cargo.

The consignment, which was in the name of a Delhi-based businessman, was lying unattended for past many days,
officials said.

Driver shot at for `staring’ in Indore

A man today shot another person because he was annoyed by the latter’s habit of `staring’, police said here.

Victim Akhilesh Rai was a driver while Nitin, the assailant, was an assistant, said the police.

After shooting and injuring Rai in the leg, Nitin fled from the spot, police said.

Rai was taken to the hospital, said police officer Abdul Hameed Khan.

Guj HC notice to Attorney General on Constitutiona

Gujarat High Court has issued a notice to the Attorney General of India on a Public Interest Litigation challenging validity of the 97th amendment to the Constitution, on the ground that Union Government had no “legislative competence” to enact it.

The PIL has been filed by Rajendra Shah of Consumer Protection Analytic Committee(CPAC). It says that Union has no power to make a law for cooperative societies, which comes under the purview of states as per the Constitution.

Probe lapses not fatal to case if guilt proved: SC

The Supreme Court has said lapses in investigation cannot be exploited by an accused to his advantage if there is sufficient evidence to nail him for a crime.

“It is well settled that remissness and inefficiency of the investigating agency should be no a ground to acquit a person if there is enough evidence on record to establish his guilt beyond reasonable doubt,” said the apex court bench of Justice Surinder Singh Nijjar and Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai in a recent judgment.

Anna supporters protest outside BJP office

Several Team Anna supporters on Thursday held a protest at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi, demanding that the party support Anna Hazare’s campaign against corruption.

Even yesterday, some Anna supporters shouted slogans against the party near the entrance of the BJP office.

In the meantime, former BJP leader KN Govindacharya has urged Team Anna to climb down from their position for a peaceful solution to the present impasse and asked the government to hold talks with them.

Woman faces death by stoning in Sudan

A 23-year-old Sudanese woman, mother to a six-month-old baby, has been convicted of adultery and will be stoned to death, Sky News reported.

Laila Ibrahim Issa Jamool is being kept shackled to her baby in Omdurman women’s prison after she was convicted by a court in the capital Khartoum July 10.

President Omar Hassan al-Bashir said Sudan would adopt a “100 percent” Islamic constitution after the breaking away of non-Muslim South Sudan a year ago.

‘Aatma’ not horror film: Nawazuddin Siddiqui

Versatile actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui says “Aatma”, his next film co-starring Bipasha Basu, is not a horror film.

“‘Aatma’ is not a horror film, it’s a psychological thriller,” Nawazuddin, who says he plays an “emotional role” in the movie, told IANS.

The film, directed by Suparn Verma, has an unusual pairing, but Nawazuddin says Bipasha has given one of her best performances in it.
