Pak judge resigns after dancing video put on YouTube

A Pakistani judge resigned on Thursday after a video showing him dancing with a girl at a party was uploaded on YouTube.

The resignation of civil judge Muhammad Masood Bilal of Khanewal district in Punjab province had been accepted, said Lahore High Court Registrar Sohail Nasir. The High Court had initiated departmental proceedings against Bilal even before he resigned, Nasir told reporters.

The US Congress Thursday voted to extend a ban on imports from Myanmar by one year despite recent easing of other sanctions against the country.

The Senate and House of Representatives voted separately to extend the ban on all imports from Myanmar, first imposed in 2003, Xinhua reported.

“By keeping the measure on the books even as we are open to new flexibilities, we will help send a strong signal to those in Burma (Myanmar),” Democrat Joe Crowley said.

Russia, Britain discussing space projects: Putin

Russia and Britain are discussing a number of space projects, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday.

“We plan to launch several British satellites,” Putin said while summing up his short visit to London.

“We would like to receive a positive response to the deployment of a Glonass (Russian satellite navigation system) station here, in Britain, to make the signal for Europe even more precise.”

“We also have opportunities of military and technical cooperation, which is good both from the viewpoint of the economy and political trust,” he said.

APIIC-Emaar case: Industrialist gets bail

Andhra Pradesh High Court on Thursday granted bail to industrialist Koneru Rajendra Prasad, an accused in the APIIC-Emaar township project case, after being behind bars for the last nine months.

The High Court directed Prasad to deposit a personal bond of Rs five lakh towards execution of the bail and asked him to surrender his passport and not to leave Andhra Pradesh.

Pune blasts planned, coordinated: Home Secretary

Home Secretary R.K. Singh Thursday called the serial low-intensity bomb blasts in Pune in Maharashtra as a planned and coordinated attack and said investigators were making progress.

“Since the blasts have taken place within an area of 500 metres and within a span of 45 minutes, it appears to be a coordinated act. I’m sure there was a plan behind it,” Singh told reporters.

ABVP for CBI probe into killing of Assam youth

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ANVP) Thursday demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the killing of a youth from Assam in Bihar.

The body of Pritam Bhattacharjee, 25, was found near a railway station on the Barauni-Katihar route in Bhagalpur district last month.

“It appears that Bihar Police is concocting stories instead of finding the culprits. We request the state government to hand over the case to the CBI,” Manoj Nikhra, ABVP leader from the northeast, said here.

The prime suspect in the case, Chattu Sahni, is absconding, a police official said.

‘Missing’ SI’s body recovered from Pakistan

The body of a sub-inspector, who allegedly went ‘missing’ on July 28 from Akhnoor was today recovered from Pakistan and was handed over to the district police, an official here said. “The body of Sub-Inspector Sunil Khajuria, was recovered by the Pakistani Rangers after it was washed away in River Chenab under mysterious circumstances on July 28 in Akhnoor area,” a senior police official here told UNI.

Stolen property Rs 45 lakhs recovered: one held

The city police have recovered stolen property worth Rs 45 lakhs within 48 hours after a complaint was lodged. On receiving information Saifabad Police today arrested Pallola Pradeep Kumar Goud (25), when he was trying to dispose the stolen diamond jewelry 1450 grams at Charminar area.

The accused was an employee of Navadurga Jewelers. On July 30 at 1400 hours, the owner of the shop handed over 22 uncut diamond jewellery sets weighing about 1450 grams to their representative Rahul and the accused for marketing.

Police averts child marriage of dalit girl

Punjab police averted the child marriage of a dalit girl here today, who alleged that she was being sold to her-in-laws for Rs 9000. Police arrested seven people who were held responsible for the marriage of the 13-year-old girl which was being performed in the Ram Nagar Basti here this evening.

Police said the minor girl made disclosure during the marriage ceremony that she was being sold off to her in laws for Rs 9000.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Thursday sought to downplay moves of Team Anna towards forming a “political alternative”, saying the constitution gave everyone a right to form a political party.

Party spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said there were several political parties in the country and anyone could float a political outfit.

The constitution of India gives everyone a right to form political party, Hussain told IANS.

Asked if a political party floated by Team Anna will succeed, he said it was for the people to decide.

Rajasthan Police constable electrocuted

A 34-year old Rajasthan Police constable was electrocuted while his colleague sustained serious burns when they came in contact with overhead electricity wires while chasing criminals in the state’s Kota town Thursday, police said.

According to police, the incident took place in Railway Colony area of the district, some 250 km from Jaipur.

“A woman had been admitted to a government hospital in Kota with severe burn injuries. When a policeman went to the hospital, she said that she was put on fire by two youth who she did not know,” said a police officer.

Dacoity of copper plates worth over Rs 2 cr in Thane district

The Thane district rural police today reported a daring dacoity of over Rs two crores in the western belt of Thane district.

Police Inspector Mukund Mahajan of the Nalla Sopara police station said two trailers laden with copper plates were dispatched from Sterlite company at Silvassa bound for JNPT. The trailers contained total of 45 tonnes of copper plates valued at about Rs 2.27 crores, and were being transported on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway towards JNPT in Uran.

Electronic nose helps locate deadly cancerous tumour

Researchers have designed an electronic nose to help diagnose malignant mesothelioma (cancerous tumour) early on, with a breath test.

Malignant mesothelioma is an uncommon, usually fatal, cancerous tumour of the lining of the lung and chest cavity or lining of the abdomen (peritoneum) caused by long-term asbestos exposure.

The non-invasive test was created by a team from the University of New South Wales (UNSW). The device was designed to distinguish between benign and malignant disease and to detect the disease early, the European Respiratory Journal reported.

Pune blasts: Wrist watches used, evidence points to IM ?

Wrist watches were used to trigger the explosives in the Pune coordinated serial blasts as evidence gathered by investigators today appeared to point to the involvement of banned home grown terror group Indian Mujahideen(IM).

Government sources in New Delhi said that IM is one of the prime suspects.
