The loss of 20 pounds can help overweight or obese individuals secure a decade’s worth of health benefits, even if they regain the weight later that decade, according to a new research.

Rena Wing, professor of psychiatry and human behaviour at Brown University’s Alpert Medical School, referred to her work from the Diabetes Prevention Programme, a study of 3,000 overweight people, who were motivated to change their behaviour rather than given drugs.

BMW hit-and-run case: SC convicts Nanda, sentence not enhanced

Sanjeev Nanda, convicted in the BMW hit-and-run case, today got a reprieve from the Supreme Court which refused to enhance the quantum of punishment of two years already undergone by him and directed him to do community service for two years.

Nanda, grandson of former Naval Chief S M Nanda, was ordered by the court to pay a compensation of Rs 50 lakh to the Centre which will be used for road accident victims.

5 dropped, 9 new ministers in Odisha

Five ministers were today dropped from the Naveen Patnaik ministry which saw nine new faces in the much-awaited ministerial expansion.

Governor M C Bhandare administered the oath of office and secrecy to the nine new ministers, including three of Cabinet rank, at the swearing-in ceremony at Raj Bhavan.

Those who took oath as Cabinet Ministers are: Dharmashala legislator Kalpataru Das, who joined the ministry for the first time, and former ministers Damodar Rout and Bijayashree Routray.

Journalist Syed Majeed-ul-Hassan Jaffri passes away

Noted journalist Syed Majeed-Ul-Hassan Jaffri (60) died at Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Thursday following cardiac arrest, family sources said.

Jaffri had worked with many prominent newspapers, including Business Standard and The Telegraph and the Asian Age.

He was currently working for a publication house in Jeddah.

Jaffri was the elder brother of well known journalist Syed Amin-Ul-Jaffri, who worked with Deccan Chronicle and is presently a MLC.

His body would be brought to Hyderabad from Jeddah in next 2-3 days, Amin Jaffri said.

Aamir goes nostalgic, buys 22 ancestral houses

Aamir Khan recently bought 22 ancestral houses in Shahabad, Hardoi district, in Uttar Pradesh. According to sources Aamir’s uncles were going to sell their property hence Aamir Khan decided to buy them because he didn’t want to part with ancestral property.

Though Aamir had hardly spent time in Shahabad but he felt a bond since it is his ancestral home. He expressed his desire that someday he will surely try out farming there.

The houses are said to have been registered in the names of his brother Faisal and his sisters Farhat and Nikhat besides Aamir.

Parl session: All-party meet called on Aug 6

With an aim of ensuring a smooth Monsoon Session of Parliament beginning on August 8, an all-party meeting has been called by Speaker Meira Kumar on August 6.

The meeting has been convened in an attempt to seek assurance from leaders of the parties that proceedings of the month-long session would not be disrupted even when they have issues to raise.

Opposition has plans to raise a variety of issues ranging from drought to price rise and corruption.

Congress is expected to name the leader of the Lok Sabha ahead of the Session as Pranab Mukherjee has now become the President.

India to launch three satellites next month

India will launch three satellites next month and two more by the end of this year, said a senior official here.

“We will be launching Spot-6, a French satellite and a small Japanese satellite on board PSLV-C21 (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) rocket, next month,” P.S.Veeraraghavan, director, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), told .

The third is a communication satellite – GSAT-10 – on-board Ariane rocket from Kourou in French Guiana.

The Thiruvananthapuram-based VSCC is part of India’s space agency Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

President to inaugurate Hindi varsity in Bhopal

President Pranab Mukherjee has given his consent to inaugurate the Hindi University and a tribal museum in Bhopal.

The President asked Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who called on him here yesterday, to fix a date for it, an official release said today. Hindi University is the first-of-its-kind in the country where all subjects will be taught in Hindi medium, Chouhan told the President.

Also, a tribal museum is being built in the state as 21 per cent population of Madhya Pradesh comprises of tribals, the release said.

Shehla Masood murder case trial from Aug30

The Special CBI court on Wednesday fixed the trial from August 30 in RTI activist Shehla Masood murder case, involving five accused.Special Judge (CBI) Anupam Srivastava approved the CBI’s trial schedule on August 30 and 31 to hear four witnesses, senior public prosecutor H K Shukla said in his submission to the court here.

All five accused in the case – Zahida (interior designer and the main accused), Saba Farooqui, Saquib Ali alias Danger, Irfan and Tabish were produced in the court when it approved the trial programme.

Three dead, eight injured in road accident

Three persons, including a woman, were killed and eight others injured, when their jeep overturned on Bijawar Road about 20 km away from here on Friday, police said.

The victims were on their way Jatashankar from Madhopur, when the mishap occurred, sources said.

The deceased were identified as Tijwa Ahirwar (55), Kuia Ahirwar (50) and Babulal Ahirwar (23), police said adding the injured were admitted to local district hospital.

A case has been registered and further investigations are on, police said.

Former RSS chief Sudarshan reported missing in Mysore

Former RSS chief K S Sudarshan was today reported missing after he went for a morning walk here, police said.

81-year-old Sudarshan, who was visiting his brother here, has not returned home from walk, they said. The family of Sudarshan’s brother has lodged a complaint, police said, adding efforts were on to trace him.

Cow`s milk unsuitable for babies: Study

“Cow`s milk deprives babies of proper nutrition as it contains high levels of protein unsuitable for immature kidneys of infants,” Head of Biochemistry and Nutrition, All-India Institute of Hygiene and Public Health, Debnath Chaudhuri, said.

“For mothers unable to nurse because of health reasons, its best to consult the family physician about a safe alternative, rather than feeding cow`s milk which is nutritionally inadequate for fast-developing babies,” he said in a study, National Family Health Survey III, quoting nutritional experts.

LeT commander killed in encounter

A top Lashkar-e-Toiba militant commander was on Friday killed in an encounter with security forces in a village in Kupwara district of North Kashmir.

“Abu Hanzullah has been killed in the operation launched in Rajwar belt of Handwara,” Inspector General of Police S M Sahai said.

Official sources said Hanzullah was one of the top ranking commanders active in Kashmir and involved in several attacks on civilians and security forces in North Kashmir.

Journalist T Venugopal passes away

Veteran journalist and former Deputy Editor of Malayalam daily Mathrubhumi T Venugopal died at his residence at the nearby Beypore this morning, family sources said.

82-year old Venugopal leaves behind wife and two children.

Venugopal joined Mathrubhumi in 1952 after completing his studies at Kozhikode Zamorins College and Kerala Varma College, Thrissur, and worked in the newspaper organisation till 1988.

He was the recipient of the first Swadeshabhimani-Kesari award instituted by the Kerala government. He had also bagged M V Paili award and Sahithya Academy award.

Former Fijian PM guilty of corruption ‎charges

Fiji’s last democratically elected leader has been jailed on corruption charges.

Laisenia Qarase was sentenced on Friday to one year in prison after being found guilty of abusing his office and failing to perform his duties.

Court documents say the 71-year-old Qarase failed to disclose a private investment interest in three companies that he was helping manage in an official capacity.

His supporters say the charges were politically motivated.

Qarase served six years as prime minister before being ousted by Fiji’s current leader, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, during a 2006 coup.

Four dead after entering septic tank

A father-son duo was among four persons who suffocated to death after the child entered a septic tank to take out a hundred-rupee note that had fallen into the pit, police said.

10-year old Sandeep, son of one Mukesh, native of Magrasa village under Bidhnu police station, dropped the note in the septic tank yesterday morning, police said.

The tank had a broken lid through which Sandeep entered the 10-ft deep tank with the help of stairs. He immediately fell unconscious after inhaling the poisonous gas inside the tank, police said.

Rupee sinks past 56-level against US dollar

The rupee on Friday again fell below the 56-mark by losing 31 paise to 56.15 against the US dollar in early trade to hit a fresh one-week low, due to strong demand for the American currency from banks and importers.

Besides, the euro stayed bearish against other currencies in overseas markets after taking a hit from the European Central Bank’s announcement of no immediate measures to fight the debt crisis, dealers said.

The rupee had lost 37 paise to close at a one-week low of 55.84 yesterday against the US currency following fresh dollar demand.

4-year old boy drowns in sump

A four-year-old boy drowned after he slipped into a sump at an under-construction building site here on Friday.

“Shankar was accompanying his mother and after some time she found her son missing. She started a search for Shankar but without success,” police said.

Police, who launched search operations, found the boy in the sump and pulled him out dead.

The sump has been dug up by a contractor for building a residential premises.

No risk to dargah: Mutt authorities

Following the publication of report ‘Dargah’s existence in peril’ in Siasat daily on August 2, the authorities of Sri Malia Pakshi Mutt Mahankali Five Temples arrived at Siasat office and made clarification that there is no threat to dargah but they themselves are protecting it with much respect and reverence. Mutt authorities further revealed that some relics have been brought from a dargah located at Makhanpur near Kanpur and kept in the temple since decades and they are very much revered.

Kofi Annan resignation US blames Russia, China

The US has blamed Kofi Annan’s resignation as special UN envoy to Syria on the failure of Russia and China to back his peace plan for the end of 17-month conflict in that country.

“Annan’s resignation highlights the failure at the United Nations Security Council of Russia and China to support meaningful resolutions against Assad that would have held Assad accountable for his failure to abide by his commitments under the Annan plan,” White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said.

Muggy morning in Delhi, rains likely

Delhiites woke up to a muggy Friday morning with the minimum temperature settling two notches above the season’s average at 28.8 degrees Celsius and humidity remaining above 60 percent. The weather office has forecast rains later in the day.

“The skies will remain cloudy and some parts of the city are expected to get one or two spells of thundershowers,” an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official said. The capital recorded 0.1 mm of rainfall till Friday morning.

Parthasarathy, Minister for Education has not entered the details of pending criminal cases against him in the affidavit submitted by him at the time of submission of nomination for Assembly elections, action would be taken against him as per rules which may disqualify him for participation in elections for six years.
