AP power woes: Centre diverts gas from KG Basin

The woes of power-starved Andhra Pradesh have been further compounded with the Centre’s order that two million metric standard cubic meters per day of gas be diverted from the Krishna-Godavari Basin to the Ratnagiri power plant in Maharashtra.

Already starved of gas for its power plants that have been working with a plant load factor of only 30 per cent, the state will now get only 1.

HC quashes case against woman for killing rapist father

In a significant ruling, the Madras High Court today quashed criminal proceedings against a woman who had killer her father when he attempted to rape and murder her, holding her action was justified as the man’s deed was
“unbearable” and “intolerable violence”.

Allowing a petition by the young woman, a second year B.Sc computer science student, seeking to quash the culpable
homicide case against her, the court said what was attempted to be done to her was an unbearable and intolerable violence.

Two kg gold stolen from jewellery shop

An employee of a jewellery shop in Kamal Cinema square today allegedly stole two kg of gold worth Rs 70,00,000, alongwith Rs 35,000 cash, police said.

According to the complaint filed by Naresh Nanichand Kothai, the owner, the employee Dattatraya Bangare, 36,
allegedly fled on motorbike with an unidentified youth after picking up the gold and the cash kept in two carrybags.

India to train Myanmarese military personnel

India today assured its support to Myanmar in training its defence personnel as both sides discussed ways of strengthening their military cooperation during the visit of a senior Commander from there.

Commander-in-Chief of Myanmar’s armed forces Vice Senior General Miu Aung Hlaing held discussions with Defence Minister A K Antony, Navy Chief Admiral Nirmal Verma, IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal N A K Browne and Army Chief Gen Bikram Singh today, officials said.

They said that during the talks, India assured support to Myanmar in training its personnel.

Supreme Court comes to rescue of Vrindavan widows

Irked over the insensitivity towards abandoned widows in Vrindavan, the Supreme Court Friday said India was the only country where every day people distribute free food and water yet there are people who remain hungry.

“Ours is the only country where every day people are offering food and cold water to those travelling on the roads but still there are people who go hungry”, said the apex court bench of Justice D.K. Jain and Justice Madan B. Lokur.

Aamir asks Nitish Kumar to popularise generic medicines

Bollywood star Aamir Khan has urged Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to make available generic medicines in the state widely.

Aamir had first highlighted the issue on his TV show “Satyamev Jayate”.

An official in the chief minister’s office Friday said Aamir had written a letter to Nitish Kumar in this connection.

“I urge you to work towards bringing about this dynamic revolution of making generic medicines easily available across the state of Bihar,” Aamir said in his letter to Nitish Kumar.

Man who killed wife’s lover in bed jailed for 5 years

A man in Sydney has been sentenced to five years in prison for killing his wife’s lover after catching both of them in bed.

Joachim Won, 56, was earlier found being not guilty of murder on the grounds of provocation, Sydney Morning Herald said.

The incident happened in May 2010, when one day Won returned to home and was stunned to find his 44-year-old wife Anna having sex with his close friend Hyung Mo Lee, 48.

Won grabbed a knife and stabbed Hyung seven times.

Olympic tennis: Sharapova in women’s singles final

Russia’s Maria Sharapova ousted Maria Kirilenko in straight sets in an all-Russian semifinal at the Olympic tennis tournament here Friday.

Sharapova swept past Kirilenko 6-3, 6-2, her aggressive style of playing racking up many more winners than Kirilenko, but also far more mistakes at the All England Club.

Sharapova’s opponent in the final will be either top seed Victoria Azarenka or fourth seed Serena Williams.

Kirilenko will play the loser of that match for the bronze medal.

According to ACB, Gali Somasekhar Reddy was evading police arrest among the eight accused in the cash-for-bail scam.
The ACB had issued summons to both Somasekhar Reddy and Kampli MLA T H Suresh Babu in the third week of July asking them to appear before the investigating officer.
However, instead of appearing before the ACB, the MLAs moved anticipatory bail petitions before ACB court.

Adarsh scam: CBI told to file report on Shinde, Deshmukh’s role

The Bombay High Court Friday asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to file a report on investigations in the Adarsh housing scam against two former Maharashtra chief ministers Sushilkumar Shinde and Vilasrao Deshmukh.

Hearing a petition filed by activist Praveen Wategaonkar, a division bench of Justices S. A. Bobade and Mridula Bhatkar asked the CBI to file its reply by Aug 29.

Wategaonkar’s petition sought details of the role of the two former chief ministers in the scam.

Lokpal bill in monsoon session if panel reports early: Bansal

The Lokpal Bill can be taken up in the monsoon session only if the select committee looking into the mesure gives its recommendation much before the stipulated time, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal said Friday.

Stressing that the government was committed to get the bill passed, Bansal told reporters here that if the Rajya Sabha’s select committee, which has been asked to give its recommendations by the first day of the session’s last week, gives them by the middle of the session, it may be possible to bring the bill in the session.

19 injured in Afghan mosque blast

At least 19 people were injured in Afghanistan when a powerful bomb exploded during Friday prayers in a mosque, a media report said.

According to the Pajhwok news agency, the blast took place in a mosque in Chaparhar, a predominantly Pashtun populated area in Nangarhar province.

Eyewitnesses said the imam of the mosque was seriously injured.

According to the health ministry, the injured were rushed to a hospital in the provincial capital Jalalabad. Nine were discharged after receiving first medical aid.

US playing blame game over Annan resignation, says Iran

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi Friday criticised the US for playing the blame game over the resignation of UN and Arab League special envoy to Syria Kofi Annan, Press TV reported.

“The US is playing blame game (over Annan’s resignation), because (it was) the Western countries and certain regional states that sabotaged Annan’s plan,” Salehi was quoted as telling the IRNA news agency, after Washington blamed the envoy’s resignation on Russia and China.

Annan announced his resignation in Geneva Thursday, and said he would stay as special envoy only till the end of this month.

China launches cancer screening programme

In a step aimed at an early diagnosis and treatment of cancer, a government-supported project, of an estimated cost of 300 to 500 million yuan (upto $8 million), has been launched in China’s 14 provincial-level regions.

According to the project’s organisers, the project will focus on lung, breast, colorectal, upper digestive tract and liver cancer, as these are the types of cance frequently noticed in urban areas, Xinhua reported.

A national survey showed that cancer has the highest mortality rate in China’s urban areas.

Minor school girl raped in Bengal

A minor school girl in West Bengal’s Burdwan district was allegedly raped by a youth when she was returning home from school, police said Friday.

“A class six student of G.N.B. School, Islampur in the district was allegedly raped while she was returning from her school. As the girl could not identify the offender, we are yet to make an arrest. The investigation is on,” said Superintendent of Police S.H. Meerza.

States allocated Rs 1,800 cr under NFSM

The Centre has allocated over Rs 1,800 crore to states under the National Food Security Mission (NFSM) this year to raise foodgrains output by 25 million tonnes in the 12th Five Year Plan period.

Uttar Pradesh gets the maximum amount at Rs 276.9 crore, followed by Madhya Pradesh Rs 226.87 crore and Maharashtra Rs 196 crore, an official statement said here on Friday.

Other major beneficiaries included Andhra Pradesh (Rs 142.64 crore), Rajasthan (Rs 135.95 cr), Karnataka (Rs 104.83 cr) and Bihar (Rs 97.87 cr).
