Two killed, 15 injured in Pakistan building blast

At least two people were killed and 15 injured when three buildings collapsed following an explosion in a fireworks workshop in Pakistan’s Multan city on Saturday, media reports said.

Several women and children were among those injured when the blast occurred in the in densely-populated Hussain Agahi Chowk area of Multan this morning.

Officials said two injured persons died at Nishtar Hospital.

“I was going to the market to fuel my car when I heard a huge blast…and in a blink, the building and two surrounding houses (were) razed to ground,” Basharat Ali, an eye witness, said.

Blast in downtown Kenyan capital kills one

A Kenyan police chief says a blast on a busy street in the capital, Nairobi, has killed at least one person.

Anthony Kibuchi said authorities suspect that the person killed was carrying explosives, but police are still investigating.

The blast last evening happened near a military air base, and Kibuchi said authorities will try to determine if the base or military personnel were the intended target.

Downtown Nairobi has seen a series of grenade attacks over the last year, with one such attack killing nine people.

Flash floods in Manali: 1 killed, infrastructure damaged

One person was killed and several vital bridges and large stretches of roads were washed away in flash floods caused by heavy rains in Manali area of Kullu district, cutting off areas beyond Manali from the rest of the state.

The flash floods that occurred late last night at Dhundi, 20 km from Manali near the construction site of Rohtang Tunnel, washed away the bailey bridge constructed by Border Roads Organisation.

Iran tests upgraded version of short-range missile

Iran claims it has successfully test-fired an upgraded version of a short-range ballistic missile.

Defence Minister Gen Ahmad Vahidi says the solid-fueled Fateh-110 has a range of 300 kilometers. He claims it can pin-point targets at sea, making it the most accurate weapon of its kind in Iran’s arsenal.

Iran has been pushing to upgrade its missiles, which already can target Israel and other parts of the region. Officials say that they are focusing on missiles that can strike naval targets.

Girl kidnapped by car-borne men

A 25-year-old girl has been allegedly kidnapped from Manjhanpur area here, police said on Saturday.

The girl had gone shopping with her aunt yesterday when some car-borne men hit her scooty following which she fell down. The men then pulled her in the car and sped away towards Allahabad, they said.

On a complaint filed by the girl’s father, a kidnapping case has been registered and efforts are on to trace her, police said.

Man sets afire paramour in Mathura

A man allegedly set ablaze his paramour over a trivial issue here, police said on Saturday.

Ram Gopal had an illicit relationship with a married woman. Yesterday when her husband had gone out for work, Gopal went to the woman’s house where they had an argument over some issue. Following the altercation, Gopal set the woman ablaze, they said.

The woman was rushed to a hospital in critical condition by her neighbours but she succumbed to injuries, police said.

Constable found dead in police barracks

A constable was found dead under mysterious circumstances at a police barracks here, officials said on Saturday.

Pawan Kumar (25) was found dead yesterday morning in the barracks at Katirav chowki in Phoolpur area where he had gone to sleep after completing his night duty, they said.

Kumar, a resident of Bhadaulia village, had been posted at Katirav since January.

The cause of the death is yet to be ascertained, the officials said.

Citizens can now connect directly to President‎

President Pranab Mukherjee’s official website has been redesigned to make it more interactive for the people, a Rashtrapati Bhavan release said on Friday.

The redesigned website was launched by the president’s secretary Omita Paul, who expresssed the hope that it would be a step forward to bring the president closer to the people.

She also said efforts would be made to ensure that the website is in line with the best global practices, the release said.

Mine accident in China, eight killed

At least eight miners trapped in a flooded coal mine in north China’s Shanxi province were found dead on Saturday.

Bodies of the mine workers in Hongtong county have been retrieved this morning, the rescue headquarters said.

Four workers, who were pulled out alive yesterday, were receiving treatment at a local hospital.

Twenty-two out of 34 people who were working underground at the time of the incident on Wednesday escaped from the shaft, while the rest were trapped underground.

According to a report, institution of madrassa (seminary) is gradually losing its charm and witnessing a slow but steady decline in the number of enrollments over the past couple of years.

Madrassa officials are said to have revealed a decline in enrolment upto more than 25% over the past four years. They believe that the scholarship scheme has encouraged parents and students to seek modern education resulting in striking reduction in the number of students opting for religious education.

Man jumps off moving plane in Malaysia

A man jumped out of a moving aircraft while it was about to take off from an airport in Malaysia, causing delay in the flight operations.

Air Asia flight AK 5187 from Miri in Malaysia’s northern Sarawak state to Kuala Lumpur was scheduled to take off at 7.40 pm yesterday. However, it was delayed for over an hour as a result of the runway drama.

A witness said that as the plane was about to take off, the man suddenly opened the emergency doors and jumped out.

Fire fighting training for waqf board employees

In the wake of two revered shrines being gutted in the Kashmir Valley, employees of the Muslim Waqf Board posted in various shrines in the city have been imparted fire-fighting training.

“Two-day disaster preparedness training programme was held for employees of Muslim Waqf Board posted in various shrines of Srinagar,” an official spokesman said.

The fire-fighting training, which concluded today, was imparted by the Divisional Disaster Management Authority in collaboration with Civil Defence, Fire and Emergency Services Department.

Girl who killed dad for rape attempt exonerated

A 19 year old girl, student of BSc Computer Science, murdered her father last year when he attempted to rape and kill her. She lost her mother five years ago and was living with her father and a brother. The Madras high court, has quashed the case against her and set her off.

The court justified her act saying that when a girl is put in a situation where she is about to be raped by her father, she would use any weapon available in an attempt to protect her modesty.

This Parliament House should be retained: PK Bansal

The idea of an alternative Parliament House has failed to catch up with Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal, who is of the view that the present heritage building should be retained.

“This (the heritage building) should be retained as Parliament House and it should be cleared of all encroachments,” he told reporters when asked about the issue of a new Parliament House complex.

Protest against ‘Jism 2’ in Assam

Alleging that the film “Jism 2” had objectionable scenes, protests were staged at local cinema halls today where some movie-goers were also abused.

Police said a section of the audience who had entered theatres to watch the movie were chased and abused by protesters which included several local organisations and student bodies.

“We have taken action to ensure that such incidents do not recur,” police said.

A spokesman of the protesters Mousam Sarma said the film was for adult viewing but it was “surprising” that college students were allowed inside the cinema halls.

85-year-old Chinese woman wakes up after being declared dead

An 85-year-old woman in China woke up during a forensic check after being declared dead by a doctor, who was suspended for the lapse.

The first-aid doctor was suspended for mistakenly declaring the woman dead after she cut her wrist in a suicide attempt but came to life during a forensic check.

The women gradually opened her eyes and gently moved her shaking hands when a forensic doctor was photographing her body, about 30 minutes after the first-aid doctor declared her dead and police cordoned off the apartment on Wednesday, her relatives said.
