Pune blasts ‘very serious matter’, says Shinde

Calling the Pune serial blasts “a very serious matter”, Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde Saturday said all-out investigations are underway to solve the case.

“We have taken it [the blasts] very seriously and central and state agencies are probing it from all angles. Since the investigations are continuing, it will not be proper for me to say anything,” Shinde told mediapersons.

He arrived in Maharashtra, his home state, for the first time after taking over as the new union home minister Aug 1, the day four blasts ripped through Pune’s busy Junglee Maharaj Road, injuring a person.

Typhoon Saola claims 41 lives in Philippines

Typhoon Saola that hit the Philippines earlier in the week has killed at least 41 people, Xinhua reported Saturday.

As many as 35 people were injured while four are still missing, said Benito Ramos, executive director of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

The weather disturbance has caused an estimated damage worth 289.853 million pesos(around $7 million) in the infrastructure and agriculture sectors.

A total of 49,975 families comprising 279,968 people are still staying in different evacuation centres, the official said.

Girl student strip searched in Bengal, two teachers held

Two school teachers have been arrested in West Bengal’s Birbhum district after a class 12 girl student was strip-searched by them on allegations of theft, a senior police official said.

The student was strip-searched by the teachers in order to find some antique coins which went missing from the school. The girl student repeatedly pleaded innocence but the teachers paid no heed to her. The incident happened on Friday and a case was registered.

“Two teachers who were named in the FIR were arrested yesterday (Friday) only,” said Birbhum police chief Rishikesh Meena.

Tension prevailed at the APSP 8th Battalion main gate at Kondapur when wives of constables staged a protest march condemning the harassment of their husbands by the commandant.

Raising slogans against Battalion Commandant Ramesh Naidu’s high handedness and alleged harassment, hundreds of wives of constables staged a dharna at the main gate and accused him of not sanctioning leave to the constables. They alleged that the commandant was seeking Rs 500 for sanction of leave for their husbands.

Waitresses who wear red clothes or put on red lipstick get up to 26 percent extra in tips than while wearing other colours, a study has found.

Bigger tips come only from male customers, and no matter what colour waitresses wear, female diners give the same kind of amounts every time, the Daily Mail reported citing the study by the Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Research.

A total of 11 waitresses were studied in five restaurants over a six-week period. They were asked to wear the same kind of T-shirt every day but with alternate colours.

Indian banks need to raise Rs.1.75 trillion capital by 2018: RBI

Reserve Bank of India Governor D. Subbarao Saturday said the Indian banks will have to raise an additional capital of Rs.1.6 trillion to Rs.1.75 trillion by March 2018 to conform to the Basel-III capital adequacy norms.

“Our own estimate show that after accounting for whatever banks will generate by way of internal accruals and interest earnings, the banks should raise an additional capital of 1.6 to 1.75 trillion rupees,” he said while speaking on risk management at the Centre for Economic and Social Studies here.

Byreddy begins 96-hr fast for Rayalaseema State

Founder president of Rayalaseema Parirakshana Samithi Byreddy Rajasekhar Reddy on Saturday launched his 96-hour hunger strike, “Rayalaseema Melukolupu Deeksha” in front of Sri Krishnadevarayulu statue in Kurnool.

While sitting for hunger fast, Byreddy Rajasekhar Reddy said that the Deeksha was aimed to safeguard the self-respect and interests of the people of perennially drought-prone Rayalaseema region. Reiterating that he was opposed to the bifurcation of State, he called upon all parties to make their stand clear on the statehood issue and put an end to uncertainty in the state.

10 missing girl students found pushed into flesh trade

Ten of the 24 girl students of a government residential school in Bihar, who went missing five years ago, were pushed into flesh trade, police said Saturday.

Shivdeep W. Lande, the Araria district superintendent of police, said a police team had found that 10 of the 24 missing students of the Kasturba Gandhi Residential School in Simraha had been pushed into flesh trade.

“I was shocked to learn that 10 of these girls were among the 25 rescued from a red light area in Forbesganj near the Indo-Nepal border in February,” Lande said.

Gold falls for third day, sheds Rs 100; silver recovers

Gold prices fell for the third day in a row by losing Rs 100 to Rs 30,100 per 10 grams in the bullion market here today on reduced offtake, while silver gained Rs 300 to Rs 53,300 per kg on some fag-end buying.

Silver coins shot up by Rs 2,000 to Rs 63,000 for buying and Rs 64,000 for selling of 100 pieces following an upsurge in the festive season demand.

Traders said sluggish demand at prevailing higher levels kept pressure on gold prices, while silver recovered on fresh buying by jewellers and coin makers to meet the festive season demand amid higher global trend.

Kiran Kumar Reddy visits at Rajiv Gandhi Airport

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Friday visited Maintenance Repair & Overhaul (MRO) facility at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad.

This is the first visit by the Chief Minister to the facility, which was inaugurated in March this year.

Home Minister Sabitha Indira Reddy, Major Industries Minister J Geeta Reddy and Infrastructure Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao accompanied the Chief Minister, a press release said.

Another US university in visa fraud row

Just a year after US officials shut down ‘sham’ Tri Valley University for immigration scam, the CEO of another American varsity has been charged with visa fraud, leaving the fate of over 400 students, mostly Indians, hanging in the balance.

The US Federal authorities yesterday raided Herguan University in Sunnyvale in California and charged its CEO Jerry Wang, with 15 counts visa fraud.

The investigation is underway but the immigration status for about 450 students enrolled at Herguan, most of whom are from India, remains uncertain, according to The San Jose Mercury News.

Two arrested for admission fraud in Varanasi

Two persons have been arrested here for allegedly submitting forged documents to get admission into a dental surgery course in Institute of Medical Science, Banaras Hindu University (BHU), police said on Saturday.

Arvind Yadav, a resident of Khmpur Raniganj attached his friend Arun Yadav’s photograph on his entrance exam form for Bachelors of dental surgery, University Proctor H C S Rathore said.

26/11 trial adjourned till August 25

The trial of seven Pakistani men, including Lashkar-e-Toiba commander Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, for their involvement in the Mumbai attacks was adjourned on Saturday for three weeks after defence lawyers were unable to attend the hearing due to the cancellation of a flight.

Lawyers representing Lakhvi and the other accused were unable to travel from Lahore to Rawalpindi, where the hearing was held behind closed doors at Adiala Jail, because their flight was cancelled following heavy rain in the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi since last night, officials told a news agency.

China discourages Uighur Muslims from fasting

China is discouraging some Muslims in the far western region of Xinjiang from fasting during Ramadan. The government says the move is motivated by health concerns, but others said yesterday that it’s a risky campaign to secularize the Muslim minority.

Several city, county and village governments in Xinjiang have posted notices on their websites banning or discouraging Communist Party members, civil servants, students and teachers from fasting during the religious holiday. Muslims around the world abstain from food and drink from dawn to dusk during the 30-day period.
