Five dead, 17 injured in South Africa shooting

Five people were shot dead and 17 injured when a group of armed assailants launched an attack in an eastern province in South Africa, police said Sunday.

The incident took place as the victims were attending a traditional event in KuaZula-Natal Saturday, Xinhua reported citing the News24 website.

Police said it was unable to comment about the suspects’ motives.

British mom delivers rare identical triplets

In a one-in-200-million cases, a British woman has defied all odds to deliver a set of identical triplets.

Thomas, Edward and Harry Chalwin look so alike that their 33-year-old mother Claire painted one of each of their fingernails to tell them apart, The Sun reported.

In a natural pregnancy, the odds of triplets are 4,000 to one, and of identical ones is even rarer.

The boys were delivered by Caesarian section at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Buckinghamshire in April.

Britain may crack down on e-cigarettes

Electronic cigarettes – that contain nicotine-infused water which is inhaled as a vapour – face a crackdown in Britain after the health minister said some were found to pose a potential danger.

According to The Sun, around two million people in the country have tried them, and 650,000 use them regularly.

Health Minister Simon Burns said some e-cigarettes have been “found to pose a potential danger”.

A consultation has found support for having the e-cigarettes controlled by the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Authority (MHRA).

Mumbai BJP leader quits, to join Congress

Stating that he has lost faith in the party, former deputy mayor of Mumbai and Bharatiya Janata Party leader (BJP) Rajesh Sharma Sunday resigned from the organisation and announced that he will formally join the Congress.

“The decision making process in the party has deteriorated and deserving people are not valued here. Hence, the decision to move away,” he told IANS.

Sharma has been associated with the BJP since 1988.

2,000 flood-hit people rescued in Odisha

At least 2,000 people were taken to safer places after the Hati river in Odisha’s Kalahandi district overflowed Sunday due to heavy rainfall during the last three days, an official said.

Mihir Mohanty, an officer of the state disaster management department, told IANS that those moved to safer places from the low-laying areas were being provided dry and cooked food.

The river was flowing two feet above the danger mark at Junagarh town, about 450 km from state capital Bhubaneswar.

Team Anna discusses forming political alternative

Team Anna members met on Sunday for the first time after they ended their indefinite fast and discussed strategy for evolving a political alternative in line with their plans to take a plunge in electoral politics.

Anna Hazare and his close aides deliberated on a variety of issues, including the name of the organisation, and other formalities like the Constitution of the party, sources said.

Besides Hazare, those who attended the meeting included Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, Kiran Bedi, Prashant Bhushan, Shanti Bhushan, Kumar Vishwas and Sanjay Singh.

Britain equipping Syrian rebels with satellite phones

British officials are secretly equipping Syrian rebel groups with satellite phones in a bid to topple President Bashar al-Assad, the Daily Mail reported.

The supply of the latest generation of phones is part of the British Foreign Office’s mission to mould militias into a coalition capable of governing the Middle East country.

The phones, used by the British defence ministry, are designed for rugged environments and are shock, dust and water resistant, the daily said.

Advani has conceded defeat for 2014 LS polls: Cong, SP

Congress and other parties on Sunday took a dig at BJP leader LK Advani saying he has conceded defeat even before the race has begun for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections while some BJP leaders differed with him.

Reacting to Advani’s latest blog posting, Congress said Advani has given up the fight by casting doubts over his party’s ability.

“I can say about this blog that Advani himself has conceded defeat by saying there is a possibility that there can’t be a BJP Prime Minister in 2014. It means he has conceded defeat,” Congress leader Rajiv Shukla told reporters here.

Many rivers above danger mark in North India

Incessant rain lashed parts of North India on Sunday where many rivers were running above the danger mark even as the toll due to the heavy downpour in Uttarakhand reached 34.

The capital Delhi recorded a maximum of 35.5 degrees celsius, two more than normal and a minimum of 27.5 degrees celsius, one more than the usual. The city received 0.8 mm of rain.

In Uttarakhand, ITBP and police personnel searched debris of flattened homes and dug rubbles to look for more bodies in the rain-ravaged state.

Gamblers’ Escape Case: 10 Cops Suspended

The Krishna district superintendent of police has suspended 10 police constables of Nandigama sub-division for dereliction of duty resulting in the escape of some gamblers from police custody.

According to the information, the Nandigama police raided Paritala Uma Holiday Playing Cards Club in Kanchikacherla mandal in June and took several persons into custody. However, the alleged gamblers reportedly hoodwinked the police and disappeared near the Magistrate’s house while they were being taken to the Nandigama court.

Beijing Games bronze medallist Sushil Kumar has promised a good show by the Indian grapplers at the London Olympics where the wrestling competition began Sunday.

“You will not find the Indian wrestlers wanting on the mat. We are determined to give our best. But then it is sports. Nothing can be predicted,” the soft spoken wrestler said at the Games Village here.

Sushil, who was the flag bearer of Indian contingent at the opening ceremony, had gone back to Minsk, Belarus to continue his training.

Cycle Rally For Safe Food

India Safe Food Organization on Sunday took out a cycle rally to create awareness among the people on natural food.

The rally was flagged off by a film actor at Sanjeevaiah Park. A large number of students, NGO activists and youth participated in the rally. They demanded that the Union government ban pesticides, which were already banned in other countries. They lamented that land and water were being polluted with the use of pesticides resulting in the food products getting poisoned.

State plans large scale revival of old temples

Endowment Minister C Ramachandraiah on Sunday informed that the State Government was planning to take up the repair and revival of old temples across the State at a large scale.

Talking to media persons after inaugurating the Panchayat office at G Reddyvaripalle in Sunduvalli mandal here, he said that the State Government was making all efforts to revive the old and historical temples in the State. He said old and dilapidated temples across the State would be revamped in order to restore their past glory.

Two Saudi men have become so fat that their combined weight exceeds 430 kg, turning them prisoners inside their homes and prompting them to appeal for help.
