TRS activists stop Seemandhra lorries at Siddipet

The Telangana Rashtra Samithi activists led by Siddipet MLA T Harish Rao on Sunday stopped the lorries belonging to Seemandhra region on Rajiv Rahadari at Rangadhampalli in Siddipet.

The lorries were done in protest against Tadepalligudem MLA Alla Nani obstructing 21 lorries from Telangana region and imposition of heavy penalty by the RTO officials. Demanding unconditional release of lorries belonged to Telangana region, Harish Rao accused the Seemandhra leaders of resorting to “cheap gimmicks”.

‘US sending wrong signals over South China Sea’

A recent statement by the US State Department on the South China Sea sent wrong signals, and did not help with the peace and stability in the region and Asia-Pacific at large, China’s state-run Xinhua news agency said in a comment Sunday.

The State Department Friday accused China of taking unconstructive moves in the South China Sea.

Iran asks Turkey, Qatar to help release pilgrims in Syria

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi has called on Turkey and Qatar to help release 48 Iranian Shia pilgrims abducted in Syria, RIA Novosti reported Sunday.

In phone conversations held with his Turkish and Qatari counterparts Ahmet Davutoglu and Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim al-Thani respectively Saturday, Salehi requested both countries to intervene immediately to secure the release of the abducted Iranians.

Maynard open to dating elder women

Singer Conor Maynard says he does not mind dating woman elder to him, but would not prefer anyone aged above 70. He is 19.

Maynard believes in striking the right connection with the woman and has an age-no-bar attitude.

“A fair share of mums do turn up at my shows. If I met someone and there was a connection, their age wouldn’t make a difference,” Reveal magazine quoted him as saying.

“Unless it was ridiculous, and she was in her 70s,” he added.

Buddhadeb hits out at Trinamool over Infosys imbroglio

Questioning Trinamool Congress-led government over the bottlenecks that have forced IT major Infosys to rethink its West Bengal project, CPI-M leader and former chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya Sunday said it has failed to attract new investments.

“The new state government has failed to bring in any new investments in the state in last 14 months. Rather than attracting investments, the investors who had invested during our tenure are going away,” said Bhattacharya.

British woman sues deodorant firm after suffering burns

A 34-year-old British woman is taking legal action after an anti-perspirant deodorant left her with a burnt skin.

Stacey Robinson, of Shoreditch, east London, suffered agonising stinging the first time she used the deodorant, The Sun reported.

Though she washed off the spray, which claimed to be for sensitive skin types and to keep skin healthy, the pain persisted.

Robinson said she has never suffered an allergic reaction to a deodorant.

She went to a doctor, who said they look like “second-degree chemical type burns”.

169 killed in North Korea floods

Severe floods have killed up to 169 people and injured 144 in North Korea since July, state KCNA news agency reported.

Another 400 people have gone missing in the floods that hit four regions of the country and destroyed crops in an area of 65,000 hectares.

UN experts, who came to North Korea this week to estimate damages, consider that the country is likely to face hunger due to crops losses.

Under UN estimates, about two-thirds of the population in North Korea faces shortage of food and pure water.

Olympic wrestling: Iran’s Soryan Reihanpour wins gold

Iranian wrestler Hamid Mohammad Soryan Reinhanpour won gold in the men’s 55 kg Greco-Roman class Sunday, beating his Azerbaijani opponent Rovshan Bayramov in the final.

Soryan Reihanpour won 3-0 to wrap up the match at the end of the second period.

Earlier, Russian wrestler Mingiyan Semenov won bronze, beating Choi Gyujin of South Korea 3-1.

The second bronze went to Hungary’s Peter Modos, who beat Haakan Erik Nyblom of Denmark 3-1.

7 killed, 3 critically hurt in shooting at US gurudwara

A gunman killed six people and left three others critically wounded in an attack on worshippers at a Sikh gurudwara (temple) in a Wisconsin suburb Sunday before being shot by a police officer.

The officer, who was sent to the temple in the Milwaukee suburb of Oak Creek, Wisconsin, after a 911 call about 10.25 a.m., was wounded but “returned fire, and that shooter was put down”, Bradley Wentlandt, the police chief in nearby Greenfield, told reporters.

India coach Michael Nobbs today apologised to the hockey fans of the country, saying the players had let the nation down with their insipid display as the team slumped to its fourth successive defeat in the Olympic competition, here today.

Woman Sri Lankan refugee, 2 children found dead

A Sri Lankan Tamil refugee and her two children, inmates of a refugee camp near here, were found dead in a dry well today, police said.

The bodies of the three were found in a charred condition in the well at Reddiyappati near here, they said.

The deceased were identified as Kalaiselvi (35) and her sons Vinod (12) and Gautam (7), all residents of the Sri
Lankan Tamil refugee camp at Thotanoothu here.

Investigations are on to ascertain whether it is a case of suicide or murder, police said.

Clash over kabaddi match dispute leaves one dead, 9 hurt

One person was killed and nine others injured in a clash between two groups over a kabaddi match in Ganjam district, the police said today.

The rival groups used sharp weapons and bamboo sticks in the clash that took place at Chudangapur under Digapahandi police station last night.

The deceased was identified as Raghunath Patra (62).

The injured persons, including two women, were under treatment at a hospital in Digaphandi. 

“We have deployed adequate police force in the village. The situation was under control,” said sub divisional
police officer (Chikiti) BN Dehuri.

10 cops suspended in gamblers’ escape case in AP

Ten police personnel were suspended in connection with escape of as many as 14 gamblers from police custody in Nandigama town of Krishna district, police said on Sunday.

The 14 were among the 42 gamblers who were arrested on July 22 after a raid at a holiday resort in Kanchikacherla mandal, however, they had given a slip to the police escort party while being produced before a court in Nandigama, they said.

RSS leader comes in support of Keshubhai Patel

Senior RSS leader Pravin Maniar has decided to support Keshubhai Patel in the upcoming state Assembly elections scheduled to be held by year end.

Maniar, while talking to reporters here said today that he has decided to support Keshubhai Patel, who is going to form a new party soon along with BJP rebels like Kanshiram Rana and Suresh Mehta.

Priyanka Gandhi may be heading for an active role in politics and is said to be set to take charge of her mother and Congress President Sonia Gandhi’s Rae Bareli Parliamentary constituency.

Criticising the media for its coverage of Anna Hajare’s agitation, chairman of Press Council of India Markendya Katju today said that many journalists were swayed by emotion and became “part of the movement” instead of reporting objectively.

Speaking at a seminar here on “Anna Hajare’s movement and media”, Katju said that a large section of the print and electronic media was swayed by emotions and acted irresponsibly.

Haryana minister Gopal Kanda resigns

Haryana’s controversial minister of state for home Gopal Kanda submitted his resignation to Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda in New Delhi Sunday evening.

“I have submitted my resignation to the chief minister today evening after he returned from Kolkata,” Kanda told reporters in Gurgaon.

The resignation came hours after Kanda was booked for abetment to suicide after a former air-hostess, Geetika Sharma, committed suicide in New Delhi Sunday. She had, in her suicide note, accused him of harassing her which led to her suicide.

Sex attacker jailed after 11 years

A 57-year-old man who forced a woman to perform a sex act at gunpoint has been identified and jailed after 11 years after the victim saved the attacker’s DNA on her clothes.

Stephanie Rudd and her then boyfriend Adam Underwood were both 16 when Keith Henderson attacked them as they walked home from a night out in 2001, The Sun reported.

Henderson forced her to perform a sex act at gunpoint after he hit Adam around the head with the weapon and forced him to stay on the ground.
