Sonia Gandhi to host lunch for UPA leaders

UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi will host a lunch for MPs of the ruling alliance and supporting parties today, ahead of the vice presidential election on August 7, official sources said.

Mrs Gandhi had hosted a similar lunch on July 18, a day ahead of the presidential poll.

US gurdwara killing: Shooter was a ‘white man with 9/11 tattoo’

The gunman who went on a killing spree inside a gurdwara in Wisconsin was a “white man with a 9/11 tattoo” on his arm, according to eyewitnesses.

Kanwardeep Singh Kaleka said those rescued from the Oak Creek, Milwaukee gurdwara described the attacker as a bald, white man, dressed in a white T-shirt and black pants and with a 9/11 tattoo on one arm — which “implies to me that there’s some level of hate crime there.”

US shooting: Police treating it as an act of domestic terror

In what is being described as an “act of domestic terrorism,” a gunman opened fire inside a Gurudwara in Wisconsin as the congregation was making preparations for Sunday morning prayers, killing at least six people and critically injuring three others.

The tragic incident unfolded at around 10:30 pm yesterday as members of the Sikh community were gathering in the 17,000 sq ft Gurudwara in Milwaukee’s Oak Creek suburb.

Seven killed due to rains in Jammu

At least seven people, including two women, have been killed and scores injured in heavy rains that led to many houses collapsing in the remote mountainous areas of Jammu region, officials said on Monday.

The flood situation was improving with water receding from major rivers, an official said. The administration has begun assessing the damage caused by the floods across the region, including loss to the crop. Road connectivity has also been restored in most areas.

13 policemen killed in Egypt

At least 13 policemen were killed and 10 others injured in an attack on a checkpoint in Egypt’s North Sinai, medical and security sources said Sunday.

The attack happened immediately after sunset prayer during Iftar when the policemen were suddenly attacked. After exchanging fire, the attackers fled away and the security forces were still pursuing them, Xinhua reported.

An armoured vehicle was stolen from the scene, said sources.

The injured were in serious condition, a medical source said.

Woman took off her clothes at airport

An Asian woman when stopped by officials at the Kuwait airport for certain clarifactions, adopted the extreme step of defence. She stripped to evade the situation.

According to Al Watan daily, the woman who was heading to her home country allegedly abused the staff at the tourism desk. She was taken aside to be questioned when she took off her clothes and began shouting incoherently.

A woman officer covered her up with a towel, guided her into her office and calmed her down.

The reason for the woman’s eratic behaviour is not yet clear.

Ramdev asks Sonia to control Cong leaders

As he prepares for his indefinite protest with a three-day “self introspection” preceding it, yoga guru Ramdev on Sunday asked Congress chief Sonia Gandhi to rein in party leaders accusing them of crossing limits and warned against any conspiracy to damage his agitation.

He said he is going to the birthplace of Sardar Vallabhai Patel in Gujarat where he will spend the next three days for “self introspection”.

Villager washed away in flash floods

A villager was washed away in flash floods in Udhampur district on Monday.

Rakesh was washed away in flash floods in Latti Duna area of the district when he was walking along the banks of a river, officials said.

Police and locals have launched an operation to trace him.

CRPF head constable found dead in Lucknow

A CRPF head constable was found dead in a car in Sarojini Nagar area here, police said on Monday.

The body of Ved Prakash Yadav (34), posted in radio signal wing, was found in a car in a CRPF camp yesterday, they said.

The police, which found Yadav lying dead on the passenger seat, found a liquor bottle in the car and suspect it to be a case of poisoning.

The body has been sent for postmortem.

Kiran Kumar likely to visit Delhi over gas quota issue

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy is likely to visit Delhi on Tuesday to seek the intervention of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh over the Centre’s decision to reduce the quota of gas to gas-based power projects in the state.

The Chief Minister may lead a delegation of Union Ministers and MPs from the state to request the Prime Minister for adequate supply of gas, official sources said here on Monday.

Gujarat on high alert after IB’s warning of terror strike

Gujarat has been put on high alert in wake of Intelligence Bureau’s warning of a possible terror strike in the state, after the Pune blasts, a top police official said on Sunday.

“High alert is in force in the state and will remain till August 15. With IB inputs and festival season round the corner security has been beefed up in the state,” the police official said on condition of anonymity.

5.3 magnitude quake jolts southeast Turkey

Turkey’s seismology center says a 5.3 magnitude earthquake has rattled the country’s southeast, but authorities have reported no damage or injuries.

The Istanbul-based Kandilli Observatory says the quake occurred at 11:37 pm (local time) on Sunday near the town of Uludere in Sirnak province, which borders Iraq.

Sirnak Gov Vahdettin Ozkan told the state-run Anadolu Agency that no damage or injuries were immediately reported.

The quake was felt in nearby provinces, and television reports said it sent people rushing out of their homes in panic.

SC to hear Nupur Talwar’s bail plea today

The Supreme Court on Monday will hear a petition by Nupur Talwar seeking bail in the double murder of her daughter Aarushi and the family’s domestic help Hemraj in 2008.

The apex court had last month issued a notice to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) after senior counsel Mukul Rohatgi contended that Nupur Talwar had been in custody for the last thee months and there was no reason for her continued incarceration.

Gujarat police on toes after IB terror warning

Gujarat police further tightened security measures after the Intelligence Bureau (IB) issued a terror warning in view of upcoming festivals and Independence day celebrations in the state. Additional DG Law and Order Shivanand Jha, said though a high alert has already been sounded in the state following the serial blasts in Pune few days ago, the state police is taking some extra measures to ensure that no untoward incident takes place. The high alert has been in force and will continue till August 15, the Independence Day.

Godavari Water Being Discharged Into Sea

Heavy inflow of the Godavari river water is reported at the Dowleshwaram barrage near here due to heavy rains upstream.

By 3 pm on Sunday, the authorities discharged 4.06 lakh cusecs of water into the sea. With this, the water level at the barrage has come down to 8.60 feet.

Irrigation authorities have discharged 3,550 cusecs for three deltas and 2000 cusecs to the western delta for irrigation purpose. (NSS)

Gamblers’ Escape Case: 10 Cops Suspended

The Krishna district superintendent of police has suspended 10 police constables of Nandigama sub-division for dereliction of duty resulting in the escape of some gamblers from police custody.

According to the information, the Nandigama police raided Paritala Uma Holiday Playing Cards Club in Kanchikacherla mandal in June and took several persons into custody. However, the alleged gamblers reportedly hoodwinked the police and disappeared near the Magistrate’s house while they were being taken to the Nandigama court.
