Russian co ‘hires’ Australian crayfish to test was

A Russian water supply utility has “hired” the crustaceans, Australian red claw crayfish, to test quality of treated wastewater before it is dumped into the Neva Bay.

Experts at St Petersburg’s water supply company– Vodokanal water supplier — will observe crayfish’s condition and heartbeat to determine the quality of wastewater that gets treated at the South-western Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Bio-electronic control is a new technology developed and used by St.Petersburg scientists.

Human waste to light up bio-toilets

Methane gas generated from human waste could be used to light up bio-toilets developed by scientists of the Defence Research and Development Organisation.

Acting on suggestions made by Union Minister for Rural Development Jairam Ramesh, the premier research agency is now working to provide lighting solution for the convenience of those who will use bio-toilets in darkness.

Brains of people who suffer from schizophrenia may attempt to repair damage caused by the disease, suggesting an adult brain`s capacity to change and grow.

Professor Cyndi Shannon Weickert, Dipesh Joshi and their colleagues from Neuroscience Research Australia studied the brains of 38 schizophrenic people and 38 normal people, focussing on one of the hardest-hit regions — the orbitofrontal cortex, the part of the brain involved in regulating emotional and social behaviour.

Exercise eases depression in heart failure patients: Study

Moderate exercise can ease depression in patients with chronic heart failure, a new study has claimed.

Researchers from Duke University Medical Center found that exercise for chronic heart failure patients improved mental and cardio-vascular health.

“Exercise has been shown to be safe for people with heart disease, and it also improves depression. These data show the combined benefits of exercise for this population include improved mental health and improved cardio-vascular health,” James A Blumenthal, lead author of the study said in a statement.

Breaking News: Blast rock Begum Bazaar

An explosion ripped through Begum Bazaar, a busy market area of Hyderabad city.

The initial reports say at least four people were injured on Monday. Blast took place in Balaya Bada located near Tope Khana Masjid, Gosha Mahal, Begum Bazaar.

A 78-year-old Narsaiah and three others are among the injured.

It further said that the blast took place in a fire work shop accidentally when the reports last came in. Further details are awaited.

Rupee erases some gains; still up 39 paise against dollar

The rupee erased some gains made this morning although it was still trading 39 paise stronger against the dollar on fresh selling of the American currency by banks and exporters

The dollar has also eased in the overseas currency markets.

The rupee resumed higher at 55.35 per dollar as against the last weekend’s level of 55.75 at the Interbank Foreign Exchange (Forex) Market and moved up further to 55.24.

However, it failed to maintain the early gains on mild dollar. It was quoting at 55.36 per dollar at 1040hrs.

9 killed, 4 missing in typhoon hit areas in China

At least nine people were killed and four others were missing after a typhoon tore through a northeastern China province, disrupting rail services and affecting over two million people.

Typhoon Damrey hit the Liaoning Province over the weekend and threw life out of gear. More than 110,000 people have been left homeless.

Nine people were killed and four others were reported missing, a report from the state-run Xinhua news agency said.

The typhoon also temporarily disrupted rail services in the province on Saturday, affecting more than two million people.

(Siasat News): A 14-year-old girl died of electrocution and two others were injured when they accidentally stepped into a water pool where a live wire had fallen at an under construction building in Karmanghat.

The victims are identified as Nandini, 14, resident of L B Nagar, Sohan, 16 and Divya, 14 who were hospitalized with severe injuries.

In what is being considered a rare feat by experts, four schoolboys from Delhi have discovered two asteroids.

Shubham Sharma and Mayank Sharma of DAV Centenary School, Paschim Vihar and young Astronomicans (amateur astronomer’s wing of SPACE) Sahil Wadhwa and Akshay Gupta, who were part of two separate teams, have made two provisional discoveries of asteroids doing the country proud, SPACE Director C B Devgun told PTI.

Taliban attack NATO truck in Pak, 1 killed

Taliban fighters attacked a truck carrying supplies for NATO forces in the restive Khyber tribal region of Pakistan on Monday, killing its driver, officials said.

The militants fled when the Khasadar militia personnel fired at them.

The militants and security forces exchanged fire for some time following the attack in Jamrud area of Khyber Agency.

Two persons were also injured in the attack, TV news channels reported.

The main road linking the border town of Torkham with Peshawar, the capital of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, was closed after the incident.

13 killed, 14 injured in workshop explosion in China

At least thirteen people were killed and 14 others injured when an explosion rocked a family-owned workshop in eastern China.

The explosion took place in a village in Wenzhou city’s Ouhai district in east China’s Zhejiang province on Sunday and fire raged in an area of 200 to 300 square metres after the explosion, rescuers said.

Fourteen persons were injured in the incident of which the condition of five was stated to be serious.

‘Pak tunnel’ resumes after week long halt

After a halt of a week, the BSF on Sunday resumed excavation work to uncover the secret tunnel underneath the India-Pakistan border in Samba district.

“The work has been resumed — efforts to uncover the tunnel in Samba sector is going on — men and machines are on the job,” a senior BSF officer told PTI.

The excavation work was suspended on July 29 after heavy rains lashed the region and filled the trench dug by the para-military force, and also due to the uncertainty over its opening despite digging at three places.

FBI launches investigation into Gurudwara shooting

The FBI today promised a thorough probe into the deadliest attack against the Sikh community in the US at a Gurudwara in Wisconsin in which seven people, including the lone gunman were killed as authorities described the shooting spree as an act of “domestic terrorism”. The Federal Bureau of Investigation launched an in-depth investigation into the shooting incident that unfolded at around 10:30 pm IST yesterday as members of the Sikh community were gathering at the Gurudwara in Milwaukee’s Oak Creek suburb.

Fiza Mohammad aka Anuradha Bali found dead

Anuradha Bali alias Fiza, the estranged wife of former Haryana Deputy Chief Minister Chander Mohan and converted to Islam, was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her house in Panchkula on Monday morning.

According to initial reports, Fiza’s dead body found at her residence in Mohali.

As per the police, Anuradha’s body was in a decomposed state as she may have died at least 3-4 days back.

She was living alone in the house after the death of her mother earlier this year, while her father had passed away sometime back.

Education Bill will be presented [n parliament to eradicate irregularities in educational institutions

(Siasat News)Center will present Education Bill in the monsoon session of Parliament in order to eradicate irregularities in educational institutions. Under this act, Central Govt. will get powers to impose heavy fines on erring educational institutions.

Ministry of Human Resource Development has identified 25 irregularities against which fines would be imposed and disciplinary action would be taken. A fine upto Rs. 25 lakh could also imposed if found guilty. Imprisonment upto 10 years could also be given.
