Heavy rains in Madhya Pradesh

Heavy and incessant rains in many parts of Madhya Pradesh has given rise to a flood-like situation with most of the rivers overflowing.

Rivers like Narmada, Betwa and Tawa were in spate.

The rains have severely affected the telephone lines and communication between Vidisha and Ashoknagar, and Bhopal and Sagar remained cut-off, official sources said.

Police said a man was killed and five others sustained injuries when a wall of their house collapsed in the Old City area of Bhopal last evening.

Water gushed inside many houses in the low-lying areas of the city.

Team Anna dissolution was waiting to happen: BJP

BJP on Monday said it is not surprised at Anna Hazare’s decision to disband his team, saying this was waiting to happen.

“I think this had to happen. Now that Team Anna has withdrawn the agitation and the fast has ended, the team has been disbanded. Team Anna is now going to enter politics,” BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said.

However, he did not appear very optimistic about the prospects of Team Anna in the political arena.

Chidambaram helping MNCs, says CPI-M

The CPI-M Tuesday accused Finance Minister P. Chidambaram of helping multinationals to escape tax on assets acquired in India and also foreign and Indian companies to avoid tax.

Commenting on the minister’s intention to reverse the retrospective effect in tax law, it said this would help Vodafone to avoid paying a tax claim of Rs.12,000 crore on acquisitions in India.

“The other step announced is to review the General Anti Avoidance Rules (GAAR) which was meant to plug the loopholes which enable tax avoidance by companies using the Mauritius route,” a CPI-M statement said.

Hooch tragedy: death toll rises to 11

The death toll in the illicit liquor tragedy in Johal Nangal village of Gurdaspur district has reached 11, police said on Tuesday.

Eight more persons succumbed while undergoing treatment since yesterday taking the toll to 11, they said.

Yesterday, three persons had died in the tragedy.

Meanwhile, police is conducting raids at various places to apprehend the culprits behind the crime, officials said.

Hamid Ansari looks to retain seat as Vice President

UPA nominee Hamid Ansari appears set to get a second term as Vice President by emerging a clear winner against NDA’s Jaswant Singh in a direct contest for the post on Tuesday.

A total of 788 Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs are eligible to vote in the poll to elect the 14th Vice President.

UPA managers are confident that 75-year-old Ansari is set to get at least 500 votes in a contest in which Ansari has a definite edge as far as the arithmetic is concerned.

12 people killed in bus accident in Nepal

At least 12 people were killed and 26 others sustained injuries when a bus they were travelling in skidded off the road and plunged into a river in central Nepal on Tuesday.

The bus heading to Kathmandu from Butawal skidded off the road at Simle section of the Prithvi Highway in Dhading district and fell down some 15 meter into the local river.

Those injured in the incident have been brought to Kathmandu and admitted to different hospitals, a police official said over phone.

3 militants, 2 security personnel killed in Peshawar

Three terrorists and two security personnel were killed during a massive search operation by Pakistani soldiers within the cantonment in the northwestern city of Peshawar, officials said on Tuesday.

The search operation was launched late last night after some terrorists reportedly escaped from custody in Peshawar, the capital of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.

While authorities were tight-lipped on the development, residents of the city posted messages on Twitter about heightened security and the “curfew-like” situation prevailing in Peshawar.

Vilasrao Deshmukh critically ill, on ventilator

A critically ill Union science and technology minister and former Maharashtra chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh was rushed to a Chennai-based super specialty hospital and admitted there late on Monday evening.

His condition had worsened and doctors had to put the minister on life support yesterday, following which a decision was taken to shift him to Chennai in an air ambulance.

Doctors at Chennai’s Global Health City super-speciality hospital say they would carry out liver transplant once Deshmukh’s condition stabilizes.

Argentine commuter train derailment injures 31

A commuter train has derailed on arrival in Buenos Aires, injuring 31 passengers and causing traffic chaos in Argentina’s capital on the fourth day of a strike that has shut down the subways.

Most of the injuries involved people who were in the last car in the Mitre line formation, which swung off the rails and slammed into a metal signal tower in the Retiro station’s rail yard today.

The tower then fell on top of the train. Emergency medical director Alberto Crescenti said 25 were treated for shock at the scene and six were others were hospitalized.

Father kills newly born twins

Frustrated with continued illness of his newly born twins, their father allegedly killed them by throwing them in the pond in village Ganpatpur under Hussainganj police station area.

The tragic incident came to light on Monday with the recovery of the bodies of 20-day-old twins, reportedly missing from their house since Friday night, from the village pond, police said.

Badku Lohar, the father, had lodged an FIR on Saturday that his twins, a daughter and a son, had gone missing and during investigations the bodies were recovered from the pond with the help of sniffer dogs, police said.

2 killed in road mishap in Bardah

Two brothers were killed and another person was injured when their jeep collided with a truck in Bardah area, police said here on Tuesday.

Bindu Bihari Verma (45) and his brother Ram Asrey Verma (40) were killed when their jeep hit the truck in Sarai Mohan village late last night, they said.

The jeep driver was injured in the accident and has been admitted to a hospital, they added.

Facing flak from the Buddhists in the US and across the globe, an American shoe manufacturing company has removed shoes with Buddha images from its website.

The Icon Shoes, with its headquarters in California, did not give any reasons for pulling out the shoes, but the global protest seems to be the reasons for it.

Thackeray slams Advani for ‘demoralising’ blog

Hitting out at BJP leader LK Advani for predicting a non-Congress, non-NDA government in 2014, Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray on Tuesday said it was akin to conceding defeat “without even entering the boxing ring” and asked the opposition NDA “not to lose heart”.

“If Advani has any doubts, he can come to me (Matoshri, Thackeray’s residence in Mumbai) and I will give him a dose of morale and strength,” Thackeray said in an edit in the party mouthpiece Saamna.

The comments followed Advani’s latest blog in which he predicted a non-Congress, non-NDA alliance coming to power.

Eight die in Kabul bombing

Eight civilians were killed and four injured Tuesday morning when a bomb planted by the Taliban targeted a bus on the outskirts of this Afghan capital, the interior ministry said.

“Eight civilians were killed and four others injured as a bomb planted by the Taliban terrorists went off near a bus in Khaldari area of Paghman district in west of Kabul at around 5.20 am Tuesday,” Xinhua reproted, citing a statement from the ministry.

A suspect was arrested by the police. A remote control device used in detonating the bomb was found in his possession.

The prophet (PBUH) said, ‘The Upper Hand is better than the Lower Hand. The upper hand is the one that gives, and the lower hand is the one that takes’. Several poor students engage themselves in selling of various items between Pathergatti and Charminar during the whole month of Ramadan. These are the students who opted to make a few extra bucks to meet the expenditure of Ramadan, through hard work instead of seeking alms. Interestingly some of those young boys study in Narayana, Chaitanya and other colleges.

Fire alarm system in all trains: Parl panel

Expressing concern over repeated fire incidents in trains, a parliamentary panel has asked the Railways to find a solution to the problem with the help of technology and experts to prevent recurrance of such incidents.

The Standing Committee on Railways has also asked the national transporter to instal automatic fire alarm system in all trains urgently.

The panel headed by DMK MP TR Baalu held a meeting on August 3 to discuss the recent fire incident in the Tamil Nadu Express and recommended several measures to prevent fires in trains.

Sikhs protest attack on US gurudwara‎ in AP

Members of the Sikh community in Hyderabad on Monday strongly condemned the shooting at a Gurudwara at Wisconsin in US in which at least six persons were killed.

Around 300 members of the Sikh community, under the banner ‘Andhra Pradesh Sikh Welfare Association’ gathered in front of the US Consulate office in Begumpet with placards and banners and staged a peaceful demonstration for about two hours.

A delegation also submitted a memorandum to the Consulate officials condemning the killing.

Policemen’s Wives End Dharna On DGP’s Promise

Wives of constables of APSP VIII Battalion ended their dharna on the third day at Kondapur here on Monday on the assurance of the Director General of Police V. Dinesh Reddy.

The police families continued their dharna on the third consecutive day on Monday. The DGP himself entered the scene and held discussions with the protestors and assured them of solution to all their demands. Satisfied with the DGP’s assurance, the police families withdrew their dharna immediately.

Krishna speaks to Clinton regarding Gurudwara shooting

External Affairs Minister SM Krishna on Monday spoke to US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton regarding the shooting incident at a Wisconsin gurudwara that left seven people dead and requested for a full and prompt investigation in a bid to give a strong message of reassurance to the Indian community regarding their security and welfare.

He also requested strengthening of security at places of worship during a telephonic conversation with Clinton, who is currently in South Africa, official sources said.
