Congress Cheated BCs On Fees Reimbursement: Naidu

TDP chief N. Chandrababu Naidu has lashed out at the Congress government for its decision on reimbursement of fee to the BC students.

Speaking to the media here on Tuesday, he claimed that the policy was introduced during the TDP rule itself. He alleged that late Rajasekhara Reddy had cheated the BCs by showing several schemes to them only to get their votes.

Ponguleti Urges Jaipal To Ensure Gas Supply To Karimnagar Gas Power Plant

AICC secretary and MLC Ponguleti Sudhakar Reddy on Tuesday said that he would request Petroleum Minister S. Jaipal Reddy to ensure gas supply to Shankarpally gas-based power plant in Karimnagar district.

Speaking to the media at Gandhi Bhavan here, Ponguleti said that it was not proper for the Opposition parties to talk as they like and asked them not see the issue in political angle. He urged the State government to solve the problem and protect interests of the State. He also urged Jaipal Reddy to see that the Karimanagar Gas based Power Plant was not confined to papers.

Posters threaten attack on girls for wearing jeans

Posters put up by a little-known outfit in the Jharkhand capital have threatened attacks on girls and women if they come out of their houses wearing jeans or without a ‘dupatta’.

Senior Superintendent of Police Saket Kumar Singh said it could be a work of some miscreants and efforts are on to nab the culprits.

The hand-written posters, put up by Jharkhand Mukti Sangh at several places including Albert Ekka roundabout, warned the girls against wearing jeans.

Godavari In Spate: People Of Low-Lying Areas Alerted

The river Godavari is in spate because of heavy rains in its upper reaches.

The level of the river, which was 26 feet here on Monday morning, shot up to 35 feet by Tuesday morning. The level of the river is rising by the hour. Officials fear that it would soon cross the danger mark and had alerted people in the low-lying areas to be alert.

Ace shuttler Saina Nehwal, who won Olympic bronze medal, received a rousing welcome at the Shamshabad international airport when she returned here on Tuesday.

Officials of Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) received her with flower bouquets. A large number of family members, friends and sports-lovers also went to the airport to welcome the girl, who has done the country proud. HC Admits Srilakshmi’s Bail Petition

The Andhra Pradesh High Court has admitted the bail petition of former senior IAS officer Srilakshmi, who was arrested in the OMC mining case and was lodged in the Chanchalguda jail as an undertrial prisoner.

After admission, the court posted the case to August 13 for further hearing. Srilakshmi tried for bail in the CBI court and High Court earlier. When her petitions were rejected, she approached the Supreme Court, which also rejected her plea. However, the Apex Court directed Srilakshmi to go back and seek bail in the lower courts.

ATM with Rs.30 lakh destroyed in fire

A State Bank of India ATM loaded with Rs.30 lakh in cash was destroyed after it caught fire in a Uttar Pradesh town Tuesday night, police said.

It took the fire brigade more than an hour to douse the flames in Etmadpur, a town 20 km from here.

The security guard at the ATM told the police that the fire started from the air-conditioner.

Ram Kishore, manager of the bank, told the police said Rs.30 lakh had been put into the automated teller machine (ATM) an hour before the incident.

The machine had been repaired after being out of order for more than a week.

CM lacked foresight to handle power crisis: Shankar Rao

Former Congress minister Dr P Shankar Rao on Tuesday blamed Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy was responsible for the acute gas shortage in the State.

Talking to media persons at Assembly premises, Shankar Rao criticised the Chief Minister for lacking foresight on the power situation in the State. Stating that the problem intensified mainly due to the inefficiency of the Chief Minister in handling the issues, he, however, gave clean chit to Union Petroleum Minister S Jaipal Reddy.

Police inspector beats up colleagues, helps accused escape

A Rajasthan Police inspector was arrested here Tuesday for helping two molestation accused escape by beating up a team of policemen that had gone to their house to arrest them, officials said.

According to police, the incident took place in city’s Vaishali Nagar area early Tuesday.

“A team of five policemen had gone to a house to arrest two men accused in a molestation case. Circle Inspector Ashok Choudhary, who was posted as a station house officer in Nagaur district until he was put on awaiting posting orders recently, lives in the same neighbourhood,” a police officer said.

Maoist camp destroyed in Odisha

A Maoist camp was destroyed Tuesday and several arms and weapons were seized in a forested area of Odisha, police said.

Based on a tip off provided by a rebel arrested recently, security forces attacked the camp located on the border of Keonjhar and Jajpur districts, police officer K.C. Mund said.

The rebels who were camping there managed to flee before the arrival of security forces, leaving behind their arms, ammunition and other materials, he said.

The arms and explosives seized from the site during a search include seven pistols, 146 bullets and several detonators, he added.

Seven killed in Iraq violence

At least seven people were killed and four injured Tuesday in separate gunfire and bomb attacks in central and northern Iraq, police said.

In Baghdad, two Iraqi soldiers were killed when gunmen attacked their car in Naariya district in Baghdad, Xinhua quoted an interior ministry source as saying.

In a separate incident, Ahmed Tofiq, an employee of the Iraqi ministry of justice was gunned down in a drive-by shooting by armed men while driving on a highway in Baghdad’s Jamia district.

3 killed in Pakistan bombing

At least three soldiers were killed and 12 others injured after a paramilitary troops’ van came under bomb attack in Pakistan’s Balochistan province Tuesday night, district officials said.

A van of Balochistan constabulary with some 15 people onboard was hit by a roadside planted device in Kech area, a district 421 km from Karachi city, Xinhua quoted Assistant Commissioner Kech Aslam Tareen as saying.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack.

UN urges Bangladesh to allow aid to Myanmar refugees

The UN Refugee Agency is calling upon Bangladesh to allow provision of humanitarian assistance to Myanmar refugees who have entered its territory, Xinhua quoted a UN spokesperson as saying here Tuesday.

“The UN Refugee Agency is appealing to the government of Bangladesh to ensure that assistance from non-governmental organisations continues to be provided to some 40,000 unregistered people who have fled Myanmar’s Rakhine state,” said Martin Nesirky, spokesperson for UN Secretary-general Ban Ki-moon, at a daily briefing.

Man kills son over household dispute

A man axed to death his minor son in frustration after having differences with his wife in Patherva area of this Uttar Pradesh district. Tehli was married to Chinta in 1998.
