Bandh called by rural bodies affects normal life

Normal life was on Wednesday disrupted in the state due to a dawn-to-dusk bandh called by the Jharkhand Rajya Panchayat Parishad to demand devolution of power to the three-tier Panchayat Raj system.

National Highways wore a deserted look while the bandh was total in Palamau, Garhwa, Dumka, Sahibganj, Jamtara, Lohardaga, Khunti and Giridih districts, according to reports.

Bandh supporters squatted on the national highway and Grand Trunk Road in Dhanbad, disrupting vehicular traffic as most schools in Ranchi remained closed.

Infants of obese mothers slow developers

Pregnant women who are overweight or obese affect how their children grow up and develop, at least initially.

A team led by a University of Iowa researcher compared the weight and height of babies born to overweight and obese mothers with those born to normal-weight mothers.

Contrary to expectations, babies of overweight/obese mothers gained less weight and grew less in length than babies of normal-weight women from just after birth to three months, the Journal of Pediatrics reports.

Nine dead in flash floods in Madhya Pradesh

Flash floods claimed nine lives in Madhya Pradesh. The district administration has asked schools to shut down as a precaution. All major rivers are flowing near or above the danger mark.

A high alert has been sounded in Hoshangabad, Sehore and Raisen districts. Many state highways have been closed due to incessant rains.

With rivers like Narmada, Betwa and Tawa flowing above the danger mark, giving rise to a flood-like situation in the state, 50 villages were affected by the flood, out of which condition in 20 of them was alarming.

(Siasat News): An incident of theft took place at the ATM of State Bank of India, Balanagar from where the thieves stole Rs. 5.5. Lakh.

It is said that the branch manager of SBI had lodged a complaint with Balanagar police when he found that a big amount was stolen from the ATM.

Balanagar police has registered and investigations are on.

Dimple Yadav, the wife of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, Wednesday took oath as a Lok Sabha member from Kannauj. She had won the by-election, caused by her husband’s resignation, unopposed in June.

Along with Yadav, M Raja Mohan Reddy, the newly-elected MP from Nellore in Andhra Pradesh, also took oath. Reddy is from the YSR Congress.

They took oath on the first day of Parliament’s monsoon session.

Pune blasts: Forensic report to be out today

The Forensic Sciences Laboratory is likely to come out with its report on the Pune blasts on Wednesday. Earlier reports said that ammonium nitrate was used in the explosives.

Four low intensity explosives had rocked Jangli Maharaj road in Pune on August 1 while one was partially detonated and another one was found live and later defused.

Official sources privy to the investigations said that ammonium nitrate, which has been often used by banned terrorist outfits like Indian Mujahideen (IM), was packed inside a steel box.

Iqbal Ahmad sworn-in as Chief Information Commissioner of MP

(Pervez Bari): Mr. Iqbal Ahmad was sworn-in as Chief Information Commissioner, (CIC), of Madhya Pradesh at Raj Bhavan here. The state Governor Mr. Ram Naresh Yadav administered oath of the office of CIC of the state to Mr. Ahmad.

It may be mentioned here that Mr. Iqbal Ahmad is a retired IAS officer of 1974 batch of MP Cadre. He was earlier an Information Commissioner who has now been elevated as Chief Information Commissioner in Madhya Pradesh.

Researchers from the Oregon State University in the US have found that a key component of broccoli sprouts -sulforaphane- can help suppress breast cancer proliferation and growth, an Australian daily reported.

Sulforaphane acts through DNA methylation, a biochemical process that is important for normal development in higher organisms.

Assam violence leads to uproar, parliament adjourned till noon

Both houses of parliament were adjourned Wednesday after members raised an uproar over the Assam violence, the Telangana statehood issue and the desecration of a statue of B.R. Ambedkar on the first day of the monsoon session.

In the Lok Sabha, the opposition National Democratic Alliance moved an adjournment motion on the ethnic violence in Assam that has claimed over 70 lives.

ATM in Agra burns down with 30 lakhs of cash inside

A State Bank of India ATM loaded with Rs. 30 lakh in cash was destroyed after it caught fire on Tuesday night, police said.

It took the fire brigade more than an hour to douse the flames in Etmadpur, a town 20 km from here.

The security guard at the ATM told the police that the fire started from the air-conditioner.

Ram Kishore, manager of the bank, told the police said Rs. 30 lakh had been put into the automated teller machine (ATM) an hour before the incident.

The machine had been repaired after being out of order for more than a week.

22 killed as bus falls into gorge

At least 22 people were killed and several others critically injured when a Tripura-bound bus fell into a deep gorge in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia hills district in the wee hours on Wednesday.

The incident took place sometime between 3 AM and 5 AM at Tamseng village near Meghalaya-Aassam border.

The bus was on its way to Agartala from Guwahati when it fell into the 80-feet deep gorge.

“We have been able to retrieve 22 bodies even as six critically injured persons were shifted to Khliehriat community health centre”, district police chief M K Dkhar said.

Monsoon fury: Seven UP rivers in spate

Seven rivers in Uttar Pradesh are in spate as rains continued in most parts of the state.

The Burrhi Rapti river in Kakrahi, Sharda river in Palia Kalan, Ghaghra river in Elgin Bridge, Ayodhya and Turtipar, Rapti river in Balrampur were flowing above the danger mark while the Ganga river was flowing at the danger mark in Varanasi, the Central Water Commission said.

UP’s Irrigation Minister Shivpal Yadav, who did an aerial survey of the flooded areas Tuesday, blamed neighbouring Nepal for the floods.

Ready to discuss issues in accordance with rules: PM

As the month-long monsoon session of Parliament got underway, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday said the government is prepared to discuss any issue in accordance with rules and hoped the opposition would cooperate in tackling legislative business before the two Houses.
