Most of them were fast asleep, while some were awake waiting to reach their destination in another three hours, when a ghastly fire cut short their life’s journey in a few seconds.

“It was all over in 15 seconds. The smoke spread fast, giving no time to people to escape,” said a passenger, who was lucky to escape.

A majority of 72 passengers travelling in the ill-fated S11 coach of New Delhi-Chennai Tamil Nadu Express were charred beyond recognition after it caught fire near Nellore railway station early Monday.

Molestation attempt foiled

(Siasat News): An incident of attempt to molest two burqa-clad sisters took place in Saifabad police station limits.

According to sub-inspector Saifabad, Mr. Keshulu, both the sisters from CIB quarters, Khairtabad, were returning to their house after iftar.

They were subject to alleged molestation by one Kiran Kumar, resident of PJR Nagar. However, the people of the locality caught him and handed him over to Saifabad police. He was reportedly drunk at the time of the incident.

Majority of victims from Chennai

Most of the victims of the train fire at Nellore in Andhra Pradesh early Monday were from Chennai, according to railway officials.

Out of 72 passengers travelling in the ill-fated S11 coach of New Delhi-Chennai Tamil Nadu Express, 28 were from Chennai, while 17 passengers were from Delhi.

The train caught fire early Monday morning minutes after it passed through Nellore railway station, which is not a scheduled stop for the train.

Two trucks collide in Bhiwani, 27 dead

Two trucks collided in the Siwani area of the Bhiwani district of Haryana on Monday, leaving 27 people dead.

One of the trucks in the mishap was carrying pilgrims from Ghugha Maari temple in Rajasthan to Kalayat and its surrounding areas of Kaithal district of Haryana.

The injured have been taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

More details were awaited on the accident.

School van hit by train, 5 students killed

In a tragic accident, five students were killed when a speeding mini local train rammed into their school bus at an unmanned railway crossing at Kot Mehtab Singh village near here on Monday.

The mini local train was moving from Beas Railway Station to Goindwal when it rammed into the school bus near Baba Bakala at Kot Mehtab Singh village, about 35 kms from here.

A rail bus is a single coach train shaped like a bus.

The injured passengers were shifted to a hospital being run by Radha Soami Sect at Beas.

Fire at Ambedkar Nagar in Chennai

A major fire broke out in Ambedkar Nagar in Chennai last night, which gutted over 600 huts in the area, fire officials said.

“We have almost put out the fire and are taking the situation into control. Some 600 plus huts have been gutted,” Divisional Fire Officer Meenakshi Vijayakumar told PTI.

Asked the officials feared any casualty, she said, “Right now things are hazy and we are yet to get any information on that.”

Nine fire tenders and six metro water lorries were pressed into service, fire officials said.

He pointed out that the lives of the Muslims have become very difficult on account of communal violence in U.P, Pratapgadh, Kosi Kalam, Barailey and Atola areas.

He said that in Kokrajhar, Dhopri, Cherang and other areas of Assam, thousand of Muslims were forced to leave their houses. They are taking shelter in refugee camps.

Five people killed in Pak fire

Five persons were killed and 12 more injured when a fire erupted in the studio of a private TV channel in this eastern Pakistani city early Monday, police said.

The fire broke out in the TV studio at Garhi Shahu area of Lahore during a special transmission for ‘Sehri’, the pre-dawn meal before the fasting during the Islamic holy month of Ramzan.

The bodies and the injured were taken to a nearly hospital.

The condition of three of the injured was critical, officials said.

The fire was caused by an electrical short circuit in the TV studio, the officials said.

PPP committed to Punjab bifurcation: Zardari

Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has said his government was working towards carving out a separate state of south Punjab, which he believes will open new avenues for socio-economic development.

Zardari made the commitment to a PPP delegation from southern Punjab led by Minister for Textile Industries Makhdoom Shahab-ud-Din, who met him here.

Zardari, the co-chairman of the ruling party, said making South Punjab a separate province was part of nation building process envisioned by the PPP and the party would endeavour to honour its commitment, according to a report in APP.

Russia-made amphibious plane crashes in Iran

A Russia-made amphibious plane crashed in northern Iran leaving three people injured, Press TV reported.

The Aerovolga LA-8 twin-engine amphibious aircraft crashed Sunday as it was about to take off from the northern province of Gilan, 266 km from Tehran.

The plane went down after its wing clipped a nearby rock and the wheels came off.

Two people onboard the plane received minor injuries, while the third person broke a leg.

The plane was reportedly brought to Iran from Russia less than a month ago, the IRNA news agency reported.

It was test-fired from Launch Complex-3 at 10.30 am.

Defence sources said the cruise missile was test-fired from a ground mobile launcher from the launch complex-3 at about 10.30 a.m. and all data is being retrieved for analysis.

ITR director M.V.K.V. Prasad said that the missile was tested successfully meeting all mission objectives.

The 8.4 meter-long missiles are capable of flying at 2.8 times the speed of sound.

Bilawal awarded B A Honours degree

Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari’s son Bilawal has been awarded a BA Honours degree at a convocation of the Oxford University.

The degree was awarded to Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the chairman of the ruling Pakistan People’s Party, at the convocation held yesterday, the PPP said in a statement on Sunday.

He was accompanied to the event by his aunt Sanam Bhutto and sister Bakhtawar Bhutto Zardari.

Bilawal graduated with BA Honours in modern history and politics.

Elephant destroy four houses

A male elephant entered the forest settlement area in Burgur today and damaged four houses, forest department officials said. They said the pachyderm had tried to take away some jackfruit kept in the house of a villager at Aalanai, but residents scared it away by beating drums. While fleeing it damaged the houses they said.

3 charged for cyclist protest outside Olympic Park

London police arrested 182 activists on bicycles who tried to breach the Olympic Park’s security cordon during the games’ opening ceremony, officials said on Sunday.

Three people have been charged with various offenses during Friday night’s protest, while the rest were released pending further questioning, Scotland Yard said.

Police, who had earlier mistakenly said they had charged four people, confirmed that a 35-year-old Portuguese man, a 34-year-old Italian man and a 51-year-old man from east London will appear in court accused of public order offenses.
