Three Bihar school boys detained for gangrape

Three Bihar school students, named as accused in the alleged gangrape of a teenaged Class 11 colleague, have been detained, police said Thursday.

The accused, sons of rich and influential people, allegedly videographed the incident June 14 and circulated its CDs and MMS among friends, police said.

The Bihar Police did not reveal where the boys were picked up from but reports from Himachal Pradesh said that the prime accused in the case surrendered before police in Shimla.

Three killed in Pakistan blast

At least three people were killed and four injured Thursday night in a bomb blast in Pakistan’s northwestern tribal region, Xinhua reported.

The blast took place in Khyber Agency in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) along the border with Afghanistan.

Tiwari appeals HC not to discose his DNA test report tommorow

Veteran Congress leader Narayan Dutt Tiwari moved the Delhi High Court today against its Single- Judge order to disclose the DNA report openly to decide the paternity suit of a youth claiming as his biological son. Tiwari, 87, in his appeal before the division bench said his DNA test report which is scheduled to be opened tomorrow (July 27) should be kept confidential as the Single-Judge, who had refused to do so did not appreciate some aspects of the case and his reputation is at stake.

Saif to take a call on wedding date, says Kareena

The impending marriage of star couple Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan has been talk of the town since last year, but the actress says its her beau Saif who will decide on the wedding date.

Earlier Saif Ali Khan’s mother Sharmila Tagore had confirmed that his wedding with Kareena will take place on October 16 at the Pataudi Palace in Pataudi village.

Ranbir Kapoor says smoking in public was part of a film shoot

Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor on Thursday told a local court through his lawyer that his being seen smoking in a public place here was part of the shoot of a film.

The actor was summoned by the court to appear on Thursday in connection with a case against him for allegedly smoking in public.

Ranbir did not come appear before the court in person but said through his lawyer that the incident when he was photographed smoking in public was a scene of the film “Jawani Diwani” which was being shot in Udaipur.

The court has fixed next hearing in the case for August 27.

YSRC demands withdrawal of hike in registration fees

Venka Reddy sent to jail till Aug 6 in call data leakage case

A criminal court at Nampally on Thursday remanded K Venka Reddy, who was arrested in the case of call data record leakage of CBI Joint Director V V Lakshminarayana, to judicial custody till August 6.

Venka Reddy was swent to judicial remand after the CID sleuths produced him before the court after his arrest in Maharashtra. He was later shifted to the Cherlapally Central Jail. Earlier, the CID officials sought five days custody of Venka Reddy.

Just two apples a day could help protect women against heart disease by cutting their cholesterol levels, according to study.

Scientists found that apples significantly lowered blood fat levels in postmenopausal women, the group most at risk of heart attacks and strokes, the Daily Mail reported Thursday.

Snacking on the fruit every day for six months slashed cholesterol by almost a quarter.

The biggest reduction was seen in low-density lipoprotein, the so-called “bad” cholesterol that furs up arteries and raises the risk of a life-threatening clot forming near the heart or brain.

Hang on ! No quick divorce in Chinese city

In China couples can get divorced in less than half an hour, but a city in east China’s Zhejiang province has introduced a policy requiring couples to wait for a week before they can get divorce. And many couples seem to have now changed their mind.

After a week, 336 of the 650 couples who applied for divorce in Cixi area did not show up at the divorce office, authorities told Xinhua.

The new divorce policy was introduced on a trial basis April 1 in Cixi area of Ningbo city.

Srinagar protests against Assam, Myanmar killings

Dozens of people Thursday gathered here to denounce the ethnic riots in Assam and the killings of Muslims in Myanmar.

The protesters demanded the dismissal of the Assam government and imposition of President’s rule in the state to end the bloodshed that has left about 40 people dead in Bodo-Muslim clashes.

Chinese politician’s wife charged with murdering Briton

Bogu Kailai, the wife of disgraced Chinese politician Bo Xilai, has been charged with murdering British businessman Neil Heywood, Xinhua reported Thursday.

Bogu and Zhang Xiaojun, an orderly at Bo’s home, were “recently” prosecuted by Hefei Municipal Intermediate People’s Court in Anhui province, the news agency said.

It said there was “irrefutable and substantial” evidence that the pair had poisoned Neil Heywood, a British businessman who had commercial dealings with Bo and his wife.

Three killed in Pakistan bombing

At least three people were killed and four injured Thursday night in a bomb blast near a centre of banned militant outfit Lashkar-e-Islam in Pakistan’s northwestern tribal region, Xinhua reported.

The blast took place in Akka Khel area of Khyber Agency in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) along the border with Afghanistan.

The bomb was fixed near a mosque and was triggered by a remote-controlled device when people were coming out after offering prayers.

A local official told Dawn News that all the killed and injured were loyalists of the banned outfit.

Congress forms coordination panel in violence-hit Assam

Amid concerns over the communal violence in Assam and its handling by the Tarun Gogoi government, the Congress Tuesday set up a 10-member coordination committee to improve working of the state administration.

The panel is headed by the chief minister and includes party leaders including state Congress chief Bhubaneswar Kalita, B.K. Handique and Santosh Mohan Deb.

The party also set up 10 member manifesto implementation committee headed by Kalita.

The coordination committee is expected to discuss the working of state government and make suggestions for its improvement.

City police on alert over two communal incidents in Ramzan

Two minor incidents allegedly of communal nature, one in Kacheguda and another in Sri Ram Nagar Colony, Banjara Hills, over the past week have put the city police on alert.

According to sources, senior police officers in the east, west and south zones have asked their Rakshak and Blue Colt patrolling teams to intensify vigil in their demarcated areas. They were especially asked to keep an eye on public gatherings and ensure that people returning home after Iftar and Taraweeh (special Ramzan prayers) from mosques are provided adequate security.
