Saudi judo fighter banned from wearing hijab

Saudi judoka Wojdan Shaherkani was on Thursday banned from wearing the hijab head scarf when she is fighting at the Olympic Games.

The 18-year-old heavyweight, part of a two-woman team sent from the conservative kingdom to an Olympics for the first time, was ordered by International Judo Federation president Marius Vizer to step onto the mat with her head uncovered.

“The Saudi Arabian athlete will take part in judo and she will fight according to the principle and spirit of judo, so without a hijab,” said Vizer following the draw.

Water pollution: Par panel to summon officials of 6 ministries

Terming water pollution as a “national crisis”, a Parliamentary committee has decided to summon officials of at least six central ministries to seek their views to find ways to check the problem.

“Since the subject of water is not restricted to only one ministry, we have decided to summon officials of Ministries of Water Resources, Agriculture, Urban Development, Panchayati Raj, Rural Development and Sanitation and Drinking Water to find a multi-agency approach to deal with the situation,” a member of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee said here.

Dried grapes as good as energy bars

Raisins can help power the body when exercising just as well as expensive sports nutrient bars, a study suggests.

The dried grapes give athletes all they need during vigorous exercise, the Daily Mail reported quoting a study by researchers at the University of California-Davis.

The research team studied people running three miles, giving them either raisins, supplement bars or simply water.

Runners who ate raisins or bars ran the distance a minute faster on average than those who had only water.

Woman killed in leopard attack

A 35-year-old woman was mauled by a leopard in the Tansa sanctuary of the district, police said Friday.

The woman, Durga, succumbed to her wounds on way to civil hospital.

At around 3 PM yesterday, when Durga, along with her son and husband, was resting in a hut in Tansa sanctuary, the big cat entered the premises and dragged her out.

Hearing her screams, the locals rushed to the spot and chased the animal, but by then the leopard had severely wounded the woman, police said.

Just two apples a day could help protect women against heart disease by cutting their cholesterol levels, according to study.

Scientists found that apples significantly lowered blood fat levels in postmenopausal women, the group most at risk of heart attacks and strokes, the Daily Mail reported Thursday.

Snacking on the fruit every day for six months slashed cholesterol by almost a quarter.

The biggest reduction was seen in low-density lipoprotein, the so-called “bad” cholesterol that furs up arteries and raises the risk of a life-threatening clot forming near the heart or brain.

No plans to screen ‘Tiger’ for late RAW agent’s family

Yash Raj Films (YRF) has decided not to screen Salman Khan-starrer “Ek Tha Tiger” for deceased RAW agent Ravindra Kaushik’s family, who has sent the filmmakers a legal notice asking for a screening of the film.

The production house and director Kabir Khan have decided to keep the film and its content away from public domain.

“I read about him in the papers. This is the first time I’ve heard of him. It’s an interesting story. But it’s not the story of my film,” said Khan.

(Siasat News): A man who was suspicious of the fidelity of his wife, had to pay a great price with his life. This incident occurred in Kukatpally police station limits.

According to details, 38-year-old J Pochiah, a security guard, took the extreme step last night and hanged self. The deceased was suspicious of the fidelity of his wife and used to question her on her character.

Yesterday afternoon, Pochaiah’s wife had left the house with his nephew Nani and came back on the next day.

Google unveils new ultra-high speed internet

After more than two years of anticipation, Google finally announced Thursday that the company’s ultra-high speed internet service Google Fiber would become available to the residents of its test community Kansas City starting in September.

Offering an internet connectivity speed of one gigabit per second, Google said the service will be about 100 times faster than the speed most Americans have with current broadband connections, reported Xinhua.

J&K separatist leaders put under house arrest

All prominent separatist leaders, including Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik were today placed under house arrest following a call for protests after Friday prayers against the killing of a youth in Bandipora on Tuesday.

Police sources said Geelani, Mirwaiz, Malik, Shabir Ahmad Shah, Nayeem Ahmad Khan and Zaffar Akbar Bhat were placed under house arrest since last evening as a preventive measure to maintain law and order in the Valley.

Separatist leaders put under house arrest in Srinagar

All senior separatist leaders in this Jammu and Kashmir summer capital were put under house arrest Friday to ward off a law and order problem over protests against the killing of a youth by the army.

Syed Ali Geelani, who heads the hardline faction of the Hurriyat Conference, and Mirwaiz Umer Farooq of the moderate group have called for condemnation of the killing of 19-year-old Hilal Ahmad Dar in Bandipora Tuesday after the Friday prayers.

Three killed, 4 injured as lorry overturns

Three persons were killed and four others injured when their lorry overturned on the Chennai-Kolkata national highway near Kanimetta village of the district Friday morning, police said.

The mishap occurred when the driver of the lorry suddenly applied brakes after noticing a stationary vehicle in front, following which it turned turtle, police said.

While one person died on the spot, two others succumbed on way to hospital.

The four injured were admitted to a local hospital where condition of two of them was stated to be serious, police said.

The timings of the above test are fixed from 9.30 to 12 and 1.30 to 4 p.m. in such a case, the Muslim candidates are likely to miss Friday prayer which is very important. Normally such competitive tests are kept on Sundays or holidays to ensure maximum participation without causing any inconvenience to the candidates.

Attempt to molest a minor girl in a city school

(Siasat News) In a school in Madannapet, an attempt was made to molest a girl studying in Upper K.G. This incident took place in a famous school situated in Dhobi Ghat area of Madannapet yesterday. The girl is aged 4 and a half year. Some students of the same school tried to molest her. The girl informed her parents. They informed the matter to school management and stressed for taking stern action against the erring students. Under some pretext or the other, the school management didn’t identify the culprits.

Auto fares hike proposed by RTA

(Siasat News) Road Transport Authority, Govt. of A.P. has prepared a proposal for Auto fares hike. The scheme is likely to be presented to Govt. tomorrow (Saturday). If Govt. approves the proposal made by RTA, the auto fare may go up to Rs. 16 or 17 for every 1.6 km distance. At present his fare is Rs. 14 for this distance and on every additional km it is Rs. 9.50.

RTA officials told that before proposing the increase in auto fares, the rates of auto fares in the other states have been taken into consideration.

Man commits suicide inside police station

Apparently upset over the biased behaviour of police, a 48-year-old man on Thursday committed suicide by slashing himself in the neck at a local police station in Amritsar.

Deputy Police Commissioner Satpal Joshi said police in the evening had detained Kuldip Singh after a complaint by his wife Sukhwidner Kaur who alleged that her husband was beating their child.

The situation turned ugly when Kuldip’s wife left the Verka police station telling the personnel not to release him, Joshi said.

Team Anna attacks key Corrupt ministers ?

A day after Team Anna targeted Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President Pranab Mukherjee, the anti-graft activists Thursday launched a tirade against several union ministers.

They attacked Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna, Urban Development Minister Kamal Nath, Science and Technology Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and Law and Justice Minister Salman Khurshid.

Govt should make right to food a fundamental right

With President Pranab Mukherjee calling for erasing poverty, CPI(M) on Thursday said his vision could be implemented only if the government enacted a law to make right to food a fundamental right.

“We can begin the journey to realise this vision, Hon’ble President, only when we enact a law that ensures that every family in our country is provided with 35 kg of foodgrains every month at Rs two per kg,” party leader Sitaram Yechury said in an editorial in the forthcoming issue of CPI (M) organ ‘People’s Democracy’.
