Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy will have a detailed interaction with the cashew farmers of Srikakulam district as part of the 3-day ‘Indiramma Bata’ programme in Srikakulam District on Saturday. The interaction will take place in Ramakrishnapuram village of Palasa Mandal.

Russian kid found living with cows

Social workers in Russia’s western Urals region have taken into their care a five-year-old girl who spent most of her life in a cowshed.

The girl’s mother and stepfather, both farmers in Perm region, did not take her to kindergarten and forced her to stay with the farm animals to keep her off their hands, the Uralinform.ru website reported.

The girl had cigarette butts for toys.

She was also frequently locked in a cupboard when she got in the way of her alcoholic parents, the Moskovsky Komsomolets said. The father also frequently beat her up.

State to spend Rs 16 K crore on irrigation: CM

Reiterating that the State Government was committed to protect the interests of farmers, Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Friday said that the government would provide irrigation facility to 30 lakh acres by spending Rs 16,000 crore by 2014.

Centre rushes 2 medical teams to Assam

Centre on Friday rushed two teams of doctors and nurses to the riot-hit regions of Assam to complement the state government efforts to provide relief and medical help to people in relief camps.

Cabinet Secretary Ajit Seth reviewed the relief and medical arrangements for the victims of the worst communal violence witnessed in recent times in lower Assam districts during a video conference with Assam Chief Secretary Naba Kumar Das.

Two killed, 26 Boko Haram members held in Nigeria

At least two members of Islamist sect Boko Haram were killed and 26 arrested in Nigeria’s Borno state for their alleged involvement in the killing of two Indian nationals, Xinhua reported.

The group members were arrested Friday in Maiduguri, capital of Borno, military authorities said.

Lt Col Sagir Musa, spokesperson of the Joint Task Force (JTF), said the raid was carried out at Bula-Bulin and Kasuwan Shanu areas of Maiduguri.

Two AK-47 rifles, machettes, explosive devices and blood-stained clothes were discovered during the raid of their hideouts.

Tahsildar in ACB net for taking Rs 10,000 bribe

Sleuths of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) have arrested a Tahsildar in Warangal district of Andhra Pradesh for allegedly taking Rs 10,000 bribe.

Akula Sammaiah, Tahsildar, Kummarakuntla village of Warangal district was caught red-handed at his office late last night when he demanded and accepted an the sum from the complainant for doing an official favour, an ACB release said here on Friday.

The bribe amount was recovered from Tehsildar and he was arrested. The case is under investigation.

Olympic shooter depending on unborn baby to win

A heavily-pregnant Olympic shooter is depending on her unborn baby to help her to victory in London, she said Friday.

Malaysia’s Nur Suryani Mohd Taibi is eight months pregnant and admits she could go into labour during Saturday’s 10-metre air rifle competition.

“If I win the medal, I will see this is yours as you helped mummy so much,” she said, addressing her unborn child.

“Maybe you give me more strength, more stability and more confidence.”

Mohd Taibi, 29, said that she can communicate with her unborn child to stop kicking her while she shoots.

80,000 displaced in Myanmar unrest

Some 80,000 people have been displaced in the recent inter-communal clashes in Myanmar, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) said Friday.

UNHCR spokesman Andrej Mahecic told reporters that over 30,000 people have received aid from the agency, Xinhua reported.

He also expressed concerns over three UNHCR staff members detained in Myanmar.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay called for prompt and independent investigation on the human rights abuses committed in the unrest.

Zardari invites Manmohan to Pak

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari Friday invited Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to visit Pakistan, saying it will provide an opportunity to the two leaders to take stock of bilateral relations.

Presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar said that an invitation letter has been sent to the Indian prime minister through the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi, Xinhua reported.

In his letter, Zardari also urged the Indian leader to visit his ancestral hometown in Punjab province on the occasion of birthday celebration of Guru Nanak.

Four women held for chain snatching in Delhi

Five people, including four women, were arrested for their involvement in gold chain snatching cases here Friday, police said.

They said Usha, 35, Geeta, 38, Shashi, 20, Anjali, 18, and Arvind, 30, used to hover around the Kalkaji temple in south Delhi and targeted women devotees wearing gold chains.

Police have recovered two chains from them.

The gang’s two other members are absconding, police said.

Delay in army deployment by Centre:Assam CM

Special CBI court here has summoned the Sabarmati Central Jail authorities following a complaint against Sohrabuddin Sheikh encounter case accused and former Gujarat DIG D G Vanzara of bashing up his co-accused Rajkumar Pandian inside the jail.

Suspended IPS officer Rajkumar Pandian, who has been lodged in Sabarmati Central Jail since his arrest along with D G Vanzara in 2007, has filed a complaint before the special CBI court that on July 22 he was beaten up by Vanzara.

HC directs Govt to initiate action against swamy goud

The High Court has directed the State government to initiate action against TNGOs leader Swamy Goud.
The High Court heard a petition on the alleged irregularities committed by Swamy Goud in the allotment of house-sites to Telangana NGOs. The court has directed the government to initiate inquiry against Swamy Goud within one month. The court also told the petitioners that they could get back to it, if the government failed to initiate action within a month.

Deport Bangladeshis from North-East: Raghava Reddy

Ramdev brings crowds to Team Anna’s fast, differs on attacking Prez

Ramdev brought in crowds briefly on Friday to Team Anna’s indefinite fast, which has so far failed to evoke much response, but differed with it on the issue of attacking new President Pranab Mukherjee.

The crowd, which appeared dismal in the morning, swelled with the arrival of Ramdev in the afternoon at the Team Anna fast venue at Jantar Mantar.

His supporters came with him in a processions to Jantar Mantar from Ramlila Maidan, where Ramdev is planning a protest from August nine against black money, bringing some relief on the faces of Team Anna members.

Dismiss Assam government, says Rajnath Singh

Senior BJP leader Rajnath Singh Friday said the central government should dismiss the Assam government for the communal clashes in the state.

Singh told reporters here that the violence in Assam, in which 45 people had been killed and lakhs displaced, was due to the lax attitude of the central and Assam governments.

“The government failed to assess the gravity of the infiltration from Bangladesh. The original inhabitants of Assam are living under constant threat of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. They have overpopulated the state,” he said.

UAE charity to host iftar banquet in Yemen

A UAE charity will host an iftar banquet here for poor Yemeni orphans and those displaced in conflicts.

The Red Crescent Authority (RCA) will launch the four-day programme as a humanitarian gesture on the occasion of Ramadan, the RCA office here said Friday.

Some 200 orphan children and refugees from Somalia, Eritrea and Palestinian will attend.
