US state faces doctor, nurse shortages

The US state of Texas will need 71,000 more nurses and 39,000 additional family physicians by 2020.

The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that President Barack Obama’s healthcare overhaul, including its “individual mandate” requirement that most Americans obtain health insurance by 2014 or face a penalty, is constitutional.

The law, which reaches full strength in 2019, shifts the healthcare focus toward prevention, making primary-care workers even more important as it highlights workforce deficiencies, Xinhua Sunday quoted the Fort Worth Star-Telegram newspaper as saying.

Youth tries to immolate—protest against liquor shop

A youth, who opposed the setting up of a liquor shop amidst the houses at the Maruthi Nagar Colony in Basanth Nagar area, attempted suicide by burning himself pouring kerosene on his body here on Sunday. The police, who were present at the spot, protected the youth by dousing the fire.

Fire breaks out in sponge unit in old city

Fire broke out in a sponge factory located in the old city here this afternoon.

Fire fighters reached the spot and trying to put out the fire. The cause of the fire is not known immediately. (NSS)

TDP chief reviews today’s dharna program

The Telugu Desam Party president Nara Chandrababu Naidu on Sunday held discussions with senior leaders of the party available in the city, on the dharna programme of the party in the State, to focus on the farmers’ problems.

He requested the leaders to take all measures to ensure success of the proposed dharna at Indira park here on Monday, by organizing it on a grand scale.

TDP leaders quits party, to join YSRCP

Telugu Desam Party Kollapur Assembly constituency In-charge Jagadheshwara Rao has resigned the party primary membership and his post here on Sunday.

Speaking to the media persons, Rao said that he has faxed his resignation letter to the party president N. Chandrababu Naidu. He announced that he would join the YSR Congress Party shortly.

Woman killed after quarrel over alcohol addiction

A woman was allegedly gunned down to death by her husband following a quarrel over his alcohol addiction at Biral village in Prabudhnagar district, police said today.

The incident took place yesterday when the accused Rajvir, in a fit of rage, opened fire at his wife, identified as Lavi after she opposed his drinking habit, leading to her death on the spot, they said.

Further probes are on, they added.

In another incident, a woman was allegedly beaten to death by her husband and in-laws over dowry in Bhud village near here, police said.

SSC, Inter distance mode results out

Nearly 63.39 percent candidates have cleared the Secondary School Certificate public examinations through distance mode.

Talking to media persons after releasing the results of both SSC and Intermediate distance mode at Andhra Pradesh Open School Society in SCERT Campus here on Sunday, Primary Education Minister S Sailajanath said that 71,399 candidates have cleared the examination out of 1,12,808 appeared registering a pass percentage of 63.39.

Shirdi bus mishap toll rises as driver succumbs to injuries

Kaleswari Travels bus driver Seshu Babu, who sustained serious injuries in the Hyderabad-Shirdi bus mishap last month, succumbed to injuries at Osmania General Hospital on Sunday. The accident claimed 33 lives after the bus fell into gorge at Osmanabad in Maharashtra.

Case against man for having son kidnapped

A case has been registered against a man for allegedly getting his seven-year-old son kidnapped and demanding ransom from his grandfather for his release, police said.

On the instructions of the child’s father Amit, Karthik, a resident of Sikandrabad town, was kidnapped by Shivkumar (25) last Wednesday while playing, SSP Gulab Singh said.

While an FIR was lodged by Amit in the case, a ransom of Rs 10 lakhs was demanded by the kidnapper by phone.

36 Naxals arrested in Andhra Pradesh

In a major operation, thirty-six Naxals were today apprehended by the CRPF and state police from Vishakhapatnam district of Andhra Pradesh.

Among those nabbed is top Naxal commander Lambayya who carries a reward of Rs 30,000 on his head.

The security forces also seized a number of weapons and ammunition besides Rs one lakh in cash after the operation.

377 debarred from Haj pilgrimage

At least 377 people have been debarred from undertaking Haj pilgrimage this year after the Central Haj Committee found them allegedly flouting travel norms.

According to Haj committee sources, the permits of the pilgrims were cancelled as they managed to get it for the second time before the completion of a mandatory gap.

According to rules as specified by the committee, a person cannot undertake pilgrimage twice within a three year period.

Girl poisons father for Marriage

Finding her family members to be a hurdle in her love affair with a youth, Vijay Kumar, a young girl poisoned her father and brother to death in Malpur village under Patepur police station in Vaishali district late on Friday night.

Patepur police station SHO Suman Kumar said the girl was having a love affair with a youth, Vijay Kumar, and once she had made an attempt to elope with him. But the duo was apprehended and the boy was thrashed by villagers.

I do not believe in miracles: Pranab jibe at Sangma

“I do not believe in miracles,” UPA presidential nominee Pranab Mukherjee remarked today, taking a jibe at his rival P A Sangma who is hoping for a miracle to see him through in the July 19 poll.

“I do not believe in miracles. I do not know whether any miracle may happen or not,” Mukherjee, who is expected to comfortably win the presidential race, told reporters on the second leg of campaign in Hyderabad and Bangalore. Mukherjee was asked about Sangma’s comments that a miracle can happen and being a tribal leader, he will get enough votes to win the election.
