Jayati Bhatia out of ‘Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 5’‎

TV actress Jayati Bhatia`s stint on dance reality show ‘Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 5’ came to an end Saturday night.

She was eliminated from the show in a decision, jointly based on audience voting and judges – Madhuri Dixit, Karan Johar and Remo D`Souza`s marks and feedback.

A trained Odissi dancer, Jayati, who plays Mataji in the show “Sasural Simar Ka”, impressed everyone with her expressions and grace, but couldn`t manage to win points with her tap dancing and a salsa act.

Bio-metrics of criminals in Cyberbad

The Cyberabad police on Saturday decided to adopt biometric system for recording fingerprints of arrested accused so that repeated offenders can be nabbed by crosschecking with clues that they gather from the scene of offence. The decision was taken during a high-level meeting with officers of Cyberabad commissionerate, Rangareddy collector V Sheshadri and the II additional district judge.

Conference of medical students in Hyderabad from August 31

Over 1,000 medical students from across the country will attend ‘OSMECON 2012’, a National Conference to be held at the Osmania Medical College in Hyderabad.

The three-day conference beginning on August 31 will present interesting clinical cases and research papers and also features debate on cannabis, a medical quiz and workshops on Basic Life Support Skills and Surgical Skills.

The conference is meant to promote academic and medical excellence and inculcating the spirit of research in undergraduate medical students, OSMECON 2012 Organising Secretary V Shiva Shankar said in a release.

Zardari to attend Islamic meet in Saudi Arabia

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari will attend a two-day Islamic summit in Makkah in Saudi Arabia in August, Geo News reported.

Saudi king Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz has invited many Muslim leaders to attend the summit Aug 14-15, on the 27th day of the holy month of Ramadan.

The summit will discuss threats of fragmentation and sedition being faced by the Muslim world.

Diplomatic sources told The News International daily that Pakistan would also highlight the threats being faced by the country as well as the security situation in Afghanistan.

18-day-old girl found killed in drain

The body of Saumya Lodi, daughter of Virendra Lodi, a worker of a Mumbai-based construction firm who worked in Noida, was found in Khoda neighbourhood.

Saumya was allegedly kidnapped from her home early in the morning.

Her grandmother Shiela Lodi claimed two masked men kidnapped her from their house around 4.30 a.m. and hit her while escaping on a bike, police said.

Police said the child’s grandmother had made suspicious statements.

Superintendent of Police Shiv Shankar Yadav said: “We have registered a case of murder against unidentified people.”

Advani to visit violence-hit areas of Assam tomorrow

After Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to violence-hit Kokrajhar in Assam on Saturday, it’s the turn for BJP leader L K Advani to visit the north-eastern state. The veteran leader is set to undertake a two-day visit to the affected areas on July 30. Advani will visit the worst-affected Kokrajhar district and some other areas in the state and meet the affected people there.

Russia may evacuate personnel from Syria if attacked

Russian servicemen may be evacuated from the country’s naval base in Tartus, Syria, if it comes under attack, Navy chief Vice Admiral Viktor Chirkov said.

“I am not the one to issue orders. We have the defence minister (for that),” Chirkov told Ekho Moskvy Radio.

“If we have to evacuate the personnel that is currently deployed there, we certainly will.”

Chirkov stressed that an order by the commander in chief of the Russian Armed Forces (the president) and Russia’s top political leadership was required for that.

7-yr-old student beaten up by teacher, in hospital

A seven-year-old girl, studying in a private school in Virudhunagar in Tamil Nadu, was hospitalised after being beaten by her teacher for not reading her English lesson aloud in class.

The girl’s mother got to know of the incident from the school bus driver when he called her to take her daughter from the vehicle, police said.

The child then told her mother that the teacher had beaten her with a ruler because she did not read aloud in class.

The girl was admitted to a hospital last evening.

Rs. 565 crore Indian black money detected in France

Undisclosed income of Indians totalling Rs. 565 crore has been detected in France, according to Income Tax authorities, indicating that the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement is showing results.

The figure was disclosed in the information that India received from France on Indians having bank accounts, under the exchange of information clause of the DTAA with the European country.

Reviving the age-old debate on how women should dress, actor-turned Trinamool MP Chiranjit Chakroborty today said women should be “conscious” of what they wear.

“We should definitely work towards removing this stigma but again women can be a little more conscious about what they are wearing,” Chiranjit told reporters at the Barasat police station where he had gone to inquire regarding an eve-teasing case.

Hazare begins indefinite fast

Anna Hazare Sunday began his indefinite fast against corruption at Jantar Mantar, joining other Team Anna members who have been agitating here since July 25.

“He has been fasting since morning,” a Team Anna member told IANS.

The members, led by Arvind Kejriwal, began their indefinite fast Wednesday to press for a strong Jan Lokpal Bill and demanding an inquiry into allegations of corruption against over a dozen ministers.

Hazare, 75, had said that he would join the fast from July 29 if the government failed to take immediate steps to check corruption in high places.

Pak ISI chief to visit US from Aug 1 to Aug 3

Pakistan’s ISI chief Lt Gen Zahir-ul-Islam will visit Washington from August 1 to 3 to hold talks with his CIA counterpart David Petraeus, the first meeting between the spy chiefs amidst persisting tensions between the two countries.

“This will be a service-to-service bilateral visit, wherein he will meet his counterpart General David H Petraeus, Director CIA,” said a brief official statement said.

Humid morning in Delhi, showers expected

The capital woke up to a hot and cloudy Sunday morning with the minimum temperature settling a notch above average at 27.9 degrees Celsius. The weather office has forecast rains towards the evening.

“The skies will be cloudy… Thundershowers are expected in some parts of the city in the evening,” said an official of the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The maximum temperature will hover around 33 degrees Celsius, added the official.

Humidity recorded at 8.30 am was 80 percent.

According to IMD, the capital’s rainfall deficit had so far grown to 61 percent.

Sania crashes out of women’s doubles

Indian women’s doubles pair of Sania Mirza and Rushmi Chakarvarthi were knocked out of the tennis competition of the 2012 London Olympics by Chia-Jung Chuang and Su-Wei Hsieh of Chinese Taipei in the opening round here Saturday.

The Indian pair battled hard but were finally defeated 1-6, 6-3, 1-6 in 91 minutes at the Wimbledon grass court.

The first set was a washout for the Indians as they managed just eight winners compared to Taipei pair’s 19.

Sania and Rushmi fought back well in the second set, even though they hit less winners. They converted both the break points on offer.

Plane crashes in southeastern Brazil killing 8

A twin-engine plane has crashed near an airport in southeastern Brazil, killing all eight people aboard.

Rodrigo Dias, an official of the company that manages the airport of Juiz de Fora, says the plane crashed this morning in a wooded area. No one on the ground was hurt.

Dias says it was foggy at the time of the accident but the exact cause of the crash is unknown.

The G1 online news site owned by the O Globo media organisation says the plane burst into flames when it hit the ground.

Teacher makes minor girl pregnant, gets her to abort child

A minor girl has lodged a complaint with the police stating that a para-teacher of a primary school in Balasore district had made her pregnant, the police said on Saturday.

The para-teacher of the school in Muruna village under Simulia police station was a regular visitor to the victim’s house and had developed a relationship with the girl.

When she became pregnant, the teacher promised to marry her. However, the teacher took her to a private nursing home at Bhadrak and terminated her pregnancy on July 20, the complaint said.

AP Cong functionary held for ‘misbehaving’ with woman patient

A functionary of the Andhra Pradesh Congress was arrested today for allegedly “misbehaving” with a 25-year-old woman patient at his private hospital here, police said.

Dr Jayendra Rishnath, convener of the state Congress committee’s Doctors Cell, was held on charge of misbehaving with the woman patient at his Kerala Aurveda Hospital here and remanded in judicial custody till August 9, police sub-inspector Ranganayakulu told reporters.

Advani to visit Assam on July 30, 31

After Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to violence-hit Kokrajhar in Assam on Saturday, BJP leader L K Advani will undertake a two-day visit to the affected areas on July 30 and 31.

Advani will visit the worst-affected Kokrajhar district and some other areas in the state and meet the affected people there.

Earlier, a BJP fact-finding team had visited the affected areas and gave its report to party president Nitin Gadkari.

The BJP has accused the Congress party at the Centre and the state for the current situation and for not taking effective steps to curb violence.

Assam riots a blot on the nation: PM; Rs 300-crore package ‎

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who visited the violence-affected areas of Assam on Saturday, termed the ethnic riot as a “blot on the nation”.

While announcing a special package of Rs 300 cr for the violence-hit survivors PM said “a sense of security should be instilled among people in all affected areas.”

He announced Rs 100 crore for relief and rehabilitation of the affected people in the six affected districts, Rs 100 crore as Special Plan assistance for development programmes in the affected areas and another Rs 100 crore under the Indira Awas Yojana.

Moderate quake jolts North east, no damage reported

An earthquake of moderate intensity shook Meghalaya, Assam and some other north-east states on Sunday but there was no report of any casualty or damage to property.

The quake, which had a magnitude of 6.0 on the Richter scale, hit the region at around 7:51 am and the epicentre was located 70 km underneath the earth’s crust in Myanmar, officials at the Seismological Survey of India said.

The officials said the quake was of “moderate” intensity and all major towns in the region felt the tremor.
