Iran test-fires ballistic missiles

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Tuesday test-fired a number of intermediate range ballistic missiles as part of a large-scale training exercise.

“Dozens of rockets” of various ranges and types were fired, including Shahab-1, 2 and 3 ballistic missiles in the exercise named “Great Prophet 7”, Iranian news agency ISNA reported.

The targets for the missiles were simulated military bases of a potential enemy, located in the deserts in Semnan province in the north of the country.

Girl’s leg chopped off to appease deity

In a macabre incident, a 13-year-old girl was drugged and one of her legs chopped off to propitiate a deity with her blood in Purnia district. Two woman sorcerers, with the help of a male aide, amputated Babli Kumari’s leg with a chopper at Barbela village on Monday night on the belief that worshipping the deity with blood of a virgin girl brings good fortune, Superintendent of Police Amit Lodha said on Tuesday.

The girl, who was battling for life in the Sadar hospital, had gone to meet the sorcerers for help to treat her ailing brother.

Sangma’s plea rejected, Mukherjee’s nomination accepted

The nomination of ruling United Progressive Alliance candidate Pranab Mukherjee for the presidential poll was accepted Tuesday, and the plea by his opponent P.A Sangma to disqualify him on the ground that he was holding an office of profit rejected.

“Pranab Mukherjee’s nomination has been accepted… resignation from Indian Statistical Institute was valid,” Mukherjee’s election agent and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal told reporters.

We entitle MLAs to purchase vehicles upto Rs. 20 lakh from their local area development fund”, chief minister Akhilesh Yadav announced in the state Assembly.

Massive haul of LTTE weapons discovered in Lanka north

A major haul of weapons and ammunition belonging to the LTTE has been discovered by the Sri Lankan police in the terror group’s former stronghold of Kilinochchi in the north of the country.

Over 250,000 rounds of live T56 bullets, over 190,000 rounds of MPMP bullets, anti-aircraft gun bullets, 81 mm mortars and claymore bombs were among the cache found hidden in an abandoned water well, the Kilinochchi police said.

‘Vajpayee wanted to induct Kalam as minister’

Former prime minister AB Vajpayee wanted to induct APJ Abdul Kalam as a minister in the NDA government in 1998, an offer Kalam declined, four years before he became the President in 2002.

The revelation was made by the former President in his recent book “Turning Points: A Journey Through Challenges”.

He said his decision to decline the Cabinet position enabled him to contribute to two major programmes that gave “spectacular” results to the nation.

Kalam, who was then the DRDO chief, recalls that he got a phone call on the midnight of 15th March, 1998 from Vajpayee.

Mexico declares bird flu emergency

Mexico has activated a national emergency plan to contain a bird flu epidemic that has affected nearly 1.7 million poultry, the agriculture ministry said.

The plan was set in motion last week after authorities confirmed the existence of the H7N3 virus in the towns of Tepatitlan and Acatic in the western state of Jalisco, Xinhua quoted the ministry as saying Monday.

Although the outbreak is now concentrated in the two towns, the plan “will be activated throughout the country to prevent the spread of the disease”, it added.

It’s not business as usual with Pak: NATO

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said there has been a decline in cooperation activities and “it’s not business as usual with Pakistan”.

“No, it’s not business as usual. We have seen a decline in cooperation activities during recent months which I strongly regret,” the EuAsia News quoted Rasmussen as saying.

“I think it is of mutual interest to have a close cooperation between Pakistan and NATO,” he added.

“I still hope that we will see a reopening of the transit routes in not a too distant future,” he told a press conference here Monday.

TDSAT gives split verdict on 3G roaming

Telecom tribunal TDSAT on Tuesday gave a split verdict in the 3G intra-circle roaming case with its Chairman allowing operators’ plea against the government order to stop the service, while its member dismissed it.

The two member bench comprising its Chairman Justice S B Sinha and Member P K Rastogi differed in theirs findings.

Justice Sinha allowed the telecom operators’ plea against the government’s directive to stop intra circle 3G roaming saying that it was violative of natural justice.

Rastogi, however, dismissed telecom operators plea saying they cannot provide roaming.

Rupee touches 4-week high, gains 57 paise against dollar

The rupee gained a hefty 57 paise to move past the 55 level against the dollar for the first time in nearly four weeks on sustained capital inflows amid government measures to revive the economy, and continued selling of the American currency by exporters.

The local unit opened marginally higher at 55.41 at the Interbank Foreign Exchange (Forex) market, and rose by 57 paise to trade at 54.86, a level last seen on June 7.

The rupee had ended 18 paise higher at 55.43 against the dollar following sustained selling of the American currency by exporters and some banks in yesterday’s trade.

Collectors directed to allot land for English medium residential schools

Secretary Minority Welfare Department Dana Kishore has directed collectors of 12 districts to allot land for English medium residential schools, so that buildings can be constructed for English medium residential schools to be established for minorities.

He told that a review meet will soon be convened in this regard. Former state minister Mohammad Ali Shabbir had made representation on the issue.

It must be noted that decision had been taken to set up English medium residential schools in 12 districts by GO MS 20, dated July 17, 2007.

`Coffee could reduce your risk of common skin cancer`

Increasing the number of cups of coffee you drink daily could lower your risk of developing the most common form of skin cancer, a new study has claimed, but cautioned that one should not start consuming the beverage excessively based on this finding.

Researchers at Brigham and Women`s Hospital of Harvard Medical School in Boston found that people who drank more cups of caffeinated coffee had a reduced risk of developing basal cell carcinoma, a common form of skin cancer which causes considerable morbidity despite being a slow-grower.
