RSS backing Ramdev, Anna Hazare: Digvijay

Congress leader Digvijay Singh on Sunday said the RSS and its affliate organisations were continuing to support yoga guru Ramdev and Anna Hazare and would back them even during elections.

“Baba Ramdev and Anna Hazare had and will continue to have the support of the Sangh Parivar. Even during elections these people have been supportive of them (Sangh),” Singh told reporters.

Singh’s remarks came on a day yoga guru Ramdev and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi shared the dais at a function in Ahmedabad.

Headley was introduced as Dawood Khan: Jundal to cops

LeT operative Sayed Ansari alias Abu Jundal has told interrogators that 26/11 conspirator David Headley was introduced to him as “efficient operative” Dawood Khan by Lashkar-e-Taiba bosses during a terror training camp in Pakistan, police said on Sunday.

Jundal also stated that much importance was given to the suggestions of Headley by the LeT bosses, police claimed.

Former minister Komatireddy Venkata Reddy has said that all the welfare schemes being implemented by the State government were innovated and initiated by late Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy.

A Congress legislator Sunday sharply criticised the party led-United Democratic Front government of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, saying some ministries were being run by the personal staff of the minister concerned.

Shark teeth worth lakhs recovered at IGI airport

Custom officials at Indira Gandhi airport here today recovered from a passenger shark teeth worth Rs three-five lakhs in the international market. Acting on intelligence inputs, officials intercepted passanger Aditya Surendra Gupta at the green channel and found him carrying 2,445 shark teeth, the import of which is prohibited under Wild Life Protection Act, 1972, a statement said.

The Andhra pradesh government will accord toop priority to encourage renewable energy in general, solar and wind power sectors by initiating special measures and expedite the process of solar projects. Former Minister opposes AP bifurcation

1 killed, 3 injured as ambulance runs over them

One person killed and three others injured seriously when an ambulance ran over them at Myapur near here this evening. police here said the accident took place at the busy Myapur when the driver lost control of the vehicle and it ran over some pedestrians, resulting one killed and three others injured. 35 killed as Tamil Nadu Express catches fire

At least 35 passengers were killed and 25 injured when a coach of the Delhi-Chennai Tamil Nadu Express caught fire near Nellore in Andhra Pradesh early Monday, officials said.

The fire broke out around 5.30 a.m. in the S-11 compartment, minutes after the Chennai-bound train left Nellore railway station in south coastal Andhra Pradesh, about 450 km from Hyderabad.

The death toll may go up as a total of 72 passengers were travelling in the second class reserved compartment.

Russia-made amphibious plane crashes in Iran

A Russia-made amphibious plane crashed in northern Iran leaving three people injured, Press TV reported.

The Aerovolga LA-8 twin-engine amphibious aircraft crashed Sunday as it was about to take off from the northern province of Gilan, 266 km from Tehran.

The plane went down after its wing clipped a nearby rock and the wheels came off.

Two people onboard the plane received minor injuries, while the third person broke a leg.

The plane was reportedly brought to Iran from Russia less than a month ago, the IRNA news agency reported.

Pregnant bank manager killed in Noida accident

A 28-year-old pregnant bank manager was killed and her husband wounded when their car collided with another vehicle in Noida early Sunday morning, police said. The driver of the other vehicle was arrested.

Anupriya, assistant manager with HDFC Bank in Delhi, was eight months pregnant. She and her husband Ravi were returning to their Sector 47 house in Noida when the accident took place in the Sector 62.

They had gone to a birthday party in Ghaziabad Saturday evening. The couple were returning home early Sunday. As they reached Sector-62, a Mahindra Marshall vehicle hit their car.

Samjawadi Party frustrated, says Shahid Siddiqui

A day after being disowned by the Samajwadi Party (SP) for interviewing Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, former MP Shahid Siddiqui Sunday hit back at his old party, saying it was feeling “extremely frustrated” at losing support in Uttar Pradesh.

“Samajwadi Party is extremely frustrated in Uttar Pradesh. It is losing grip. Muslims are losing faith in SP,” Siddiqui told NDTV Sunday.

Siddiqui’s remarks came a day after SP distanced itself from him and said he had long ago quit the party and was not even a primary member.

Olympics: South Africa’s Van Der Burgh sets world record in 100m breaststroke

Van der Burgh, 24, got a fast start and never looked like being caught, winning in 58.46, 0.05 seconds faster than Brenton Rickard’s 2009 mark.

“I don’t even know what to think. I don’t know how to describe it,” Van der Burgh said.

“I’ve been working towards this goal. It’s amazing. I’ve been doing so much hard work over the last four years.”

AP Cong functionary held for ‘misbehaving’ with woman patient

A functionary of the Andhra Pradesh Congress was arrested today for allegedly “misbehaving” with a 25-year-old woman patient at his private hospital here, police said.

Dr Jayendra Rishnath, convener of the state Congress committee’s Doctors Cell, was held on charge of misbehaving with the woman patient at his Kerala Aurveda Hospital here and remanded in judicial custody till August 9, police sub-inspector Ranganayakulu told reporters.

Constable commits suicide in AP

A constable allegedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide in Rajaomandi mandal of East Godavari district, police said on Sunday.

Under tension after being served a memo by his senior, constable Srinivas, attached to Jeddangi police station, consumed the poisonous substance last night, police said.

The case was being investigated, police said.
