Teacher rapes girl, cook terminates her pregnancy

A teenaged girl studying in class VI of an Unnao school was allegedly raped by her class teacher who later tried to terminate her pregnancy with the help of the school cook. However, as her condition deteriorated, the girl’s parents rushed her to the Queen Mary’s Hospital (QMH) in the city in a critical condition. The government has ordered an inquiry into the incident and would try to find out if there were other victims of the teacher’s misdeed in the school.

PM’s intervention sought in Mecca Masjid blast case

On the completion of five years of Makkah Masjid bomb blast, Civil Liberties Monitoring Committee (CLMC) has demanded the Prime Minister of India to intervene and monitor the investigation of Makkah Masjid “as the state government completely failed to fulfill its responsibility.”

Sai Baba’s treasure: 280 kg gold, 3000 kg silver

Two devotees Friday donated Sri Sai Baba gold worth Rs 60 lakh at his temple here, Shirdi Sansthan sources said.

A devotee from Delhi donated a 1.5 kg gold bell, while a person from Mumbai offered a 900 gm gold pot before Sri Sai Baba.

During the last five years, Sansthan has received various gold offerings from devotees, sources said, adding that now the total gold in Sri Sai Baba’s treasure is 280 kg while silver is 3,000 kg, besides diamonds worth Rs three crore.

‘Pakistan 2nd most negatively perceived country’

Pakistan has been ranked second in the list of most negatively rated countries in the world by a global poll for BBC World Service, which surveyed 24,090 people around the world.

Pakistan was rated “mostly negative” by 51% of the respondents, getting placed just one spot above the most negatively rated country – Iran, which was rated negative by 55% of the total respondents, reports The Express Tribune.

Most of the respondents blamed Pakistan’s foreign policy and the poor treatment of its citizens for such a widespread negative perception of the country.

Zardari leaves for US to attend NATO summit

President Asif Ali Zardari has left for Chicago to attend a NATO summit as Pakistan mulls the reopening of supplies for the coalition forces in Afghanistan, a media report said on Friday.

Zardari will be in Chicago for the 25th NATO Summit being held May 20-21 at the invitation of NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, reported Geo News.

The Foreign Office said the decision to attend the summit was taken after both the defence committee of cabinet and federal cabinet endorsed the invitation.

Zardari would address an International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) meeting.

Rupee tanks to fresh all-time low of 54.89 against US dollar

The rupee on Friday plunged to a new all-time low of 54.89 against the US dollar as capital outflows continued, raising widespread concerns about the health of the economy.

Forex dealers attributed the fall to strong capital outflows in tune with the fall in local as well as global stocks where investors are increasingly avoiding riskier assets and moving to the new safe haven – the US dollar.

Strengthening of dollar against the euro, which plunged to a four-month low following renewed worries over deepening eurozone debt crisis, also put pressure on the rupee.

Facebook set to raise $16 billion with largest tech IPO

Pricing its IPO at USD 38 a share, Facebook, the highly popular social networking site that has over 45 million users in India, is expected to raise USD 16 billion, making it the largest tech IPO in history.

It’s reported to be the third largest US IPO ever, trailing only the USD 19.7 billion raised by Visa in March 2008 and the USD 18.1 billion raised by automaker General Motors in November 2010.

SBI Q4 profit surges to Rs 4,050.27 crore

Country’s largest lender, State Bank of India (SBI) on Friday posted net profit of Rs 4,050.27 crore in the fourth quarter ended March 2012, against just Rs 20.88 crore recorded in Q4 of the previous fiscal.

SBI profits had taken a big hit in Q4 of 2010-11 on account of higher provisioning for bad loans and increased tax outgo.

Total income of the bank rose to Rs 33,959.54 crore in the quarter against Rs 26,536.84 crore in the same quarter a year ago, SBI said in a filing on the BSE.

Unclaimed Muslim body identified

Mr. Amir Ali Khan news editor Siasat received a letter from Quader Husain, sub inspector of police, Golconda, through which he requested burial of an unidentified Muslim body.

Siasat daily collected the body from Osmania hospital and performed burial at Amanullah Shah Graveyard.

The deceased has been identified as Shaikh Mahboob, son of Shaikh Ismail, aged 57 years, resident of Maqta, Raj Bhawan. He was said to be an employee of BSNL.

Prosthetic retina shows promise in restoring sight

Scientist are developing a prosthetic retina which can restore sight to patients suffering from age-related macular degeneration (AMD), one of the commonest causes of blindness.

The thin silicon device acts by electrically stimulating neurons (nerve cells) in the retina, which are left relatively unscathed by the effects of AMD while other image capturing cells, known as photoreceptors, are lost. It requires no wires and would make surgical implantation simpler.
