Defending his son Sidhartha’s remarks on the woman allegedly molested by an Australian player Luke Pomersbach that have drawn widespread criticism, RCB owner Vijay Mallya said he is not a child and has tweeted his impressions about the “lady’s conduct”.

“He is not a child. He can defend himself. He said what he said. Twitter is a global forum and he has been tweeting
for a while and he has his set of followers,” Mallya senior told NDTV when asked whether his son’s tweets were
appropriate.

The police registered a case of gang-rape Friday against the youths whom the girl named in her complaint. The girl resides in one of the girls’ hostel on the campus.

Facebook shares open trading with over 10 pc premium at USD 42

Making a strong stock market debut, shares of Facebook today started trading with a premium at USD 42.

Facebook shares opened with over ten per cent premium at USD 42 compared to its initial public offer price of USD 38.

The social networking site’s IPO, that mopped up USD 16 billion, is one of the largest in the history of US companies.

Paring the initial gains, Facebook shares were trading at USD 40 after 15 minutes of its opening on the Nasdaq stock
exchange.

The price band of the IPO was set at USD 34-38.

Sex racket busted in Pune

The Pune crime branch has arrested a 50-year-old person from Mumbai for allegedly running a sex racket in Pune. The police also rescued a call girl, whom the suspect had brought from Mumbai.

The police have identified the suspect as Vijaykumar Pannalal Singh of Malvani, Malad (West), Mumbai. Acting on the tip-off the social security cell of the Pune crime branch led by senior police inspector Bhanupratap Barge laid a trap and arrested Singh near from a theatre in Pune.

Huge cache of arms recovered in Kashmir

Security forces today recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition from Kandi forest area in Kupwara district of north Kashmir, a defence spokesman said.

The seizure included an AK 56 Rifle, its one magazine with 18 rounds, an Under Barrel Grenade Launcher (UBGL) with
eight rounds, five rockets with a booster, four electric detonator, 14 IED Circuits and five Chinese grenades, the
spokesman said.

The recovery was made on a specific information from Kandi forest, about 100 kms from here, during a joint search

Militants ganging up with criminals, says Gogoi

Cadres of the armed militant outfits have joined criminal gangs in Assam, leading to recent spurt in petty crimes across the state, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said here Friday.

“All the militant outfits in Assam, barring two, have signed ceasefire agreements with the government. Now, after the outfits have shunned violence and responded to our peace efforts, some of the cadres have joined criminal gangs. This has led to an increase in petty crimes such as extortion, kidnappings and murder in the state,” Gogoi said.

Shia groups clash in Lucknow

Two groups of the Shia community fought pitched battles outside Lucknow’s famous Bada Imambara, exchanged blows and set on fire a vehicle Friday.

PM calls all-party meet May 23 over job quota

Stink again disrupts Rajya Sabha sitting

A stink in the Rajya Sabha again Friday forced the upper house to be adjourned twice for nearly half an hour.

A week after half of the question hour was disrupted because of a “sewage gas-like smell”, some members complained of “foul smell of burning” which forced the house to be adjourned Friday.

As a private member’s bill on formation of Telangana state was being raised and treasury and opposition benches were engaged in a verbal duel over the issue, Congress member Alka Balram Kshatriya raised an alarm about a burning smell.

‘Domestic IT market grew to Rs.918 billion in 2011-12’

The domestic Information Technology (IT) market has grown 16.7 percent to Rs.918 billion during 2011-2012, Minister of State for Communications and IT Sachin Pilot said Friday.

“The growth rate of the IT domestic market is 16.7 percent in the financial year 2011-12. The domestic market has increased from Rs.786 billion to Rs.918 billion,” Pilot said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.

The minister also said that the aggregate revenue for the IT sector is estimated to cross $100 billion in 2011-12 from $88 billion during previous financial year.

Officials defend minister’s trip to US to get Dreamliner

Civil aviation ministry officials Friday defended Minister Ajit Singh’s visit later this month to the US to receive the first of the 27 Boeing-787 Dreamliners, saying the aircraft manufacturer is sharing the cost.

“The programme of Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh visiting US will not cost more than 15-20 lakh. This is far less than giving an advertisement in any national dailies or TV channels,” said a senior ministry official.

Retail inflation surges to 10.36 percent in April

India’s inflation based on retail prices surged 10.36 percent in April as compared to 9.38 percent in the previous month due to a sharp increase in prices of vegetables, edible oil and milk products, government data showed Friday.

The price rise was sharper in urban areas. In urban area, inflation based on Consumer Price Index (CPI) surged by 11.10 percent in April year-on-year, while in rural area it grew by 9.86 percent, according to data released by the Central Statistics Office.

Indian-origin councillor Abdul Razak Osman has become the first Lord Mayor of the Islamic faith to hold the high office in the multi-cultural town of Leicester, which has a large minority of Indian origin people.

Osman was born in Kenya and arrived in the UK in 1971. His late father Yousuf Razak worked on the East African Railway, and worked for a local engineering firm after moving to Leicester.
