Bill Gates-Akhilesh to sign MoU on health

Microsoft founder Bill Gates met Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav Wednesday and offered the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s support to help improve health services in the state.

It was decided that a memorandum of understanding (MOU) shall be signed within two months between the UP government and the Foundation, an official said.

Man jailed for spitting on Putin’s portrait

A man in Russia has been sentenced for 15 days in prison for spitting on President Vladimir Putin’s portrait, RIA Novosti reported.

Dmitry Karuyev, an opposition activist who is a member of the Other Russia movement, was detained as he staged one-man protest outside the offices of the ruling United Russia party in Cheboksary city on the eve of Putin’s May 7 inauguration for a third term.

Police said Karuyev’s actions could have triggered disorder.

Apologize, doctors tell Aamir Khan

An umbrella body of 21 medical institutions Wednesday asked Bollywood star Aamir Khan to apologize for accusing doctors of malpractices in his TV talk show “Satyamev Jayate”.

Medscape India said the representation of malpractices supposedly perpetrated by doctors was “rather sad” and Aamir Khan should offer his apologies.

Former Andhra minister sent to jail

A special court here Wednesday sent former Andhra Pradesh minister Mopidevi Venkataramna to prison in YSR Congress leader Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy’s corruption case.

Venkataramna was produced in the CBI court after his five-day CBI custody ended Tuesday. He was shifted to the Chanchalguda Central Jail, where Jaganmohan Reddy and two other accused are lodged.

The court accepted his plea to treat him as a special category prisoner. Venkataramna also moved a bail petition, the hearing on which was adjourned to Thursday.

Karunanidhi says he never threatened to quit UPA

DMK president M. Karunanidhi Wednesday threatened to pull out of the UPA government over the hike in petrol prices but later did a quick U-turn.

Shortly after he made the threat while leading protests against rising prices, the former Tamil Nadu chief minister told reporters that he had not threatened to quit the Congress-led UPA.

“I never said anything like that,” Karunanidhi clarified, adding that his party would continue in the UPA and would not like to put any pressure on the central government ahead of presidential polls.

HC verdict won’t affect Muslim quota in state: Botcha

PCC Chief Botcha Satyanarayana has said that the reservations offered to Muslim minorities in the State will not be affected by the High Court verdict. There was no link between the State reservation to the Muslims (4%) and minorities’ reservations (4.5%), he said.

Addressing the media at Gandhi Bhavan on Wednesday along with former minister Shabbir Ali, Botcha said that the Centre would knock the doors of the Supreme Court with regard to High Court’s verdict.

He said that the State will request the Centre to make required changes in the reservations for the minorities.

Army raids cricketer Umar Gul’s house; arrests his brother

Pakistan Army commandos raided cricketer Umar Gul’s house in Peshawar and arrested his brother on charges of harbouring a wanted militant, according to a media report on Wednesday.

A RECORD number of smokers tried to quit the habit last year, according to official figures.
About one in ten looked for help from the NHS smoking cessation services, the Scottish Government said.
Women, including those who were pregnant, and older people were more likely to try to stop, with the largest number of people coming from “deprived” areas.

The number of quit attempts increased by 29 per cent from 83,952 in 2010 to 108,268.

Release of post matric scholarships (RTF and MTF)

As a part of the system of streamlining of Post Matric Scholarship disbursal, the State government has released total amount of Rs 1402.01 crores towards RTF and MTF as a part of the II and III installments during May.

This would cover the total verified demand of applications available with the State.

This is the first time that all scholarship arrears up to 2011-12 has been released by May.

It is expected that the disbursement of all the amount of Rs 1402.01 crores will be completed by June 30.
