Personal liberty can’t be curtailed illegally: Supreme Court

Personal liberty is the “most precious and prized right” guaranteed by the Indian constitution and it can’t be taken away without following the due procedure of law, says the Supreme Court.

The court said this as a caution while holding that a person who is already in custody could be ordered to remain in detention (under the National Security Act) only if there was a real possibility that his release on bail would lead to activities prejudicial to public order.

Muddu Krishnama Naidu alleges Parthasarathy

Former Education Minister and TDP leader Mr. Muddu Krishnama Naidu alleged that the Congress Minister of Education Mr. K. Parthasarathy is playing with the future of the intermediate students.

He blamed that he is more concerned with the increase in his properties to brighten his political career rather than showing interest in the careers of 25,000 intermediate students who could not write examination because they didn’t get hall tickets on time.

Free Cancer check up camp at Muslim Maternity Hospital

Minor girl forced to drink liquor, raped

City Kotwali police have booked a man for forcing a minor girl to drink liquor and then raping her.

The accused, Gajanan Sawarkar and his accomplices, stopped the 14-year-old girl, a student of standard IX near Namuna locality, when she was heading towards her house. They asked the girl to accompany them. When refused, they made her drink liquor.

Later, Gajanan took her to ST stand and parked his bike. He then took the girl to Prashant Nagar garden in a rickshaw. He against gave liquor and raped her.

A book on dental education released

Dr. M. Bala Murali Krishna released a book on dental education at Ravindrabharathi yesterday. This book has been written by Dr. Vikas Gorminga. It is about the awareness about dental education.

I will not run behind offers: Priyamani

Priyamani has dismissed reports that her mother visits Mumbai often to hunt Bollywood projects for her. “We will never go behind offers. And there is no necessity for us to do that,” says the National Award winning actress.

“My relatives reside in Mumbai. So my mother goes there to visit them. Other than this, there is no professional reason attached to her frequent trips to Mumbai,” the actress said.

Spl. D.P.L. Centres will be setup for issuing identity cards to those voters whose names are found in voters’ list. These centers will function in all the 12 districts where by elections are being held on 12th June.

Maulana Shamsuddin Quadri passed away

Maulana Shamsuddin Quadri Al-Jeelani who was the founder of Masjid and Madrasa Shamsia of Salala Barkas passed away in Medina yesterday.

After performing Umrah, he had gone to Medina. He was admitted in hospital where he breathed last. He is the descendant of Hazrath Syed Shah Ishaque Nooruddin Quadri of Kurnool whose genecology goes back to Hazrath Shaik Abdul Quadir Jeelani of Baghdad.

Parents put son in washing machine

A set of prankster parents decided to fool around with their child and put him in a washing machine. The YouTube video shows them in a store selling washing machines.

A sign towards the left-hand corner of the video frame says ‘Junior wash $2.95’. The child’s parents probably took that literally. However, the prank turned into a major rescue exercise when the washing machine clicked shut automatically once they closed the door.

The couple frantically tried to rescue their child shut inside the washing machine by pulling at the door with all their might.

UN chief expresses support for rights of homosexuals, gay marriage

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has voiced support for the rights of the homosexuals, calling on world nations to repeal their discriminatory legislations against homosexual people.

In a statement, Ban called for a repeal of laws, now on the books in 76 countries, that criminalize gay marriages.

He also called on the countries to curb violence against homosexual, bisexual and transgender people, decriminalize same-sex relationships, ban discrimination and educate the public.

Strong families key for successful children, says study

A welfare state has little or no bearing on how children turn out, says an international study which found that strong families are the key to produce well adjusted and successful youngsters.

According to researchers, the children of married parents are likely to do better than those from broken or single-parent families, no matter how much state support the family is given, Daily Mail reported.

The study singled out the British welfare state as an example of the state support’s failure in making a difference to the lives and success of children.

Maoist leader arrested in Tamil Nadu

A Maoist leader, who is alleged to have been providing arms training, has been arrested here, police said Sunday.

Vivek, the state secretary of the banned Communist Party of India-Maoist, was arrested Saturday following an intelligence input.

The Maoist leader, who hails from Dindigul district, is alleged to have been providing arms training in Periakulam in Theni district, around 500 km from here.

Police have taken Vivek to Periakulam and are now on a lookout for his accomplice Padma.

Foreign minister to lead UAE delegation to NATO summit

A United Arab Emirates (UAE) delegation led by the country’s Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan will participate in talks with NATO leaders in the US Sunday.

The talks will be held as part of the NATO’s 25th summit in Chicago city where the UAE minister will join heads of state and leaders from 60 participating countries.

The two-day summit will be the largest since NATO’s establishment 60 years ago.

New memory chip hundred times faster: Study

A new kind of memory chip made from silicon could be a hundred times faster than standard Flash memory chips, British scientists say.

Researchers at the University College London reported in the Journal of Applied Physics that they have developed a new kind of Resistive RAM (ReRAM) memory chip.

The chip is based on materials whose electrical resistance changes when a voltage is applied, and they “remember” this change even when the power is turned off.

Pakistan revenue collection up 25 percent

Revenue collection in Pakistan has registered a 25 percent growth during the first 10 months of 2011-12 fiscal year as compared to last year, Finance Minister Abdul Hafeez Shaikh has said.

“If the trend continues, the revenue target of Rs.1,952 billion (about $21 billion) is expected to be achieved by the end of current financial year,” the official APP news agency quoted Shaikh as saying Saturday.

NATO supply deal in sight

Britain has mediated a deal between Pakistan and the US to reopen NATO supply lines to Afghanistan through the country, a media report said Sunday.

A top British lawmaker reportedly said that Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has given a positive signal to his British counterpart David Cameron for the resumption of supply lines during a one-to-one meeting between the two leaders earlier this month in London.

The development was not disclosed in the joint statement then issued by the 10 Downing Street because it might have triggered protests in Pakistan, Daily Times reported.

Congress ready to sit in Opposition: Salman Khurshid

On the eve of the UPA-II’s third anniversary, Law Minister Salman Khurshid admitted that the coalition government has been facing a tough ride. Khurshid said that the Congress was prepared for all options, including being in Opposition, after the 2014 General Elections.

The minister was speaking exclusively to Karan Thapar on ‘Devil’s Advocate’.
