220 turtles found on Mumbai-bound train

A huge cache of rare turtles stuffed in two bags was discovered by Government Railway Police (GRP) on board the Mumbai-bound Pushpak Express.

The turtles, aged between one-seven years, are of a rare species. They were apparently being smuggled by a wildlife poaching gang, police said Monday.

The 220 turtles were packed in two large bags and were slipped below a berth in the general coach of the Pushpak Express. The GRP guards on a routine check of the coach late Sunday found some movement in the bags. There was no one to claim it.

Mumbai rave party busted, IPL players questioned

Two Indian Premier League (IPL) players were questioned after Mumbai Police busted a rave party here and detained about 100 people, officials said Monday.

Rahul Sharma of India and Wayne Parnell of South Africa, who play in the IPL for Pune Warriors, were questioned by police after the rave party was busted in Juhu in northwest Mumbai, a senior police official said.

“Around 58 boys and 38 girls were detained and taken to a hospital for blood and urine check-up after a rave party was busted in Juhu late Sunday.”

Shilpa Shetty Blessed With Baby Boy

Shilpa delivered a healthy baby boy at Hinduja Healthcare boutique hospital in Khar. The baby and mother are doing fine. Raj and the entire family were present at the time of birth.

Shilpa’s husband Raj Kundra confirmed the news on Twitter “God has blessed us with a beautiful baby boy. Both mother and baby are fine. I am thrilled to bits!!”

BCCI chief goes after gay son with a straight bat

Ashwin, son of BCCI president N Srinivasan, has accused his father of homophobia and of using his clout to unleash a cycle of violence against him and his partner Avi Mukherjee in order to ‘cure’ him of homosexuality.

Ashwin, 43, says he and his partner have been subjected to physical and mental torture at Srinivasan’s behest for years. He says the latest incident took place on April 30, when the police picked up the couple from an upmarket Bandra restaurant-pub Escobar and beat them with iron rods.

Heatwave batters AP dists, Rentachintala records 47 deg c

Heatwave conditions continued to prevail in the districts of Guntur, Prakasham and Nellore of Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Nizamabad, Mahabubnagar, Nalgonda and Karimnagar of Telangana and Chittoor of Rayalaseema even as the highest maximum temperature of 47 degrees celsius was record at Rentachintala. A bulletin from Meteorological Centere here today said heatwave conditions would continue to prevail in Adilabad and rest of the above districts during next two days.

MP will not allow ‘shameful’ IPL matches: CM

Terming the Indian Premier League (IPL) as ‘shameful’, the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Sunday said that his government would not allow IPL matches to be held in the state.

“IPL khel ke nam par kalank aur bahut sharmnak hai samaj mein (IPL is a stigma and very shameful in the name of sports in the society),” Chouhan told reporters in Indore.

Referring to a series of controversies that have hit the IPL, he said that the iconic player like Sachin Tendulkar should not play in the IPL.

Women under attack, this time from Shiv Sena MLA

In yet another instance of what appears to be a politician trying to throw his weight around, a Shiv Sena MLA from Ambernath, Balaji Kinikar allegedly misbehaved with a female ground staff member of Sri Lankan Airlines last week, while he was heading to Colombo for a function. The police insist they have no information, but sources say Kinikar was drunk, and point out that there is a Sahar police station diary entry on both the incident as well as the fine of Rs1,500 that Kinikar paid after being detained overnight.

Jailed ex-Israeli president freed for seven hours

Jailed former Israeli president Moshe Katsav convicted of raping a former female employee was freed for seven hours Sunday to attend his son’s wedding.

Katsav has been in jail for five and a half months and will have to return to Maasiyahu Prison in the city of Ramle. Katsav was granted a seven-hour leave after he was examined by a psychiatrist and was found not dangerous, Kol Israel radio station reported.

The sun and moon aligned over the earth in a rare astronomical event on Sunday – an annular eclipse that dimmed the skies over parts of Asia and North America, briefly turning the sun into a blazing ring of fire.

Eclipses of some type occur almost every year, but stargazers have not seen an annular – shaped like a ring – eclipse on US soil since 1994, and the next one is not to occur until 2023. That is because the phenomenon requires a particular set of orbital dynamics, NASA Space Scientist Jeffrey Newmark said.

Narayana demands probe into ministers

CPI State secretary Dr K Narayana has demanded that ministers, who were involved in the disproportionate assets case being faced by the YSR Congress chief Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, should also be investigated.

Addressing the Nagonda district party workers’ meeting here on Sunday, he said that it was improper that only Jagan was being investigated while ministers, who were also involved in the irregularities, were being left scot-free. He said that all the tainted ministers should first be sacked.

BJP senior leader and former minister Bandaru Dattatreya has alleged that Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy was using officials as placards.

Two roasted alive in madhira

Two persons were burnt alive in a major fire in the district during the wee hours of today. One of the deceased was a Fire Service personnel. Police said the fire had occurred in a cold storage warehouse in Madhira caused by electrical short-circuit.

Several bags of chilli stored in the warehouse were gutted. Police said one person working in the godown and a fire engine driver were caught in the fire and burnt alive. A fire engine was also partially burnt.

No threat to Kiran Govt even if Jagan sweeps by-polls: Venkatesh

Cops resort to preventive arrests of TRS workers in Parakala

In view of the whirlwind tour of Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, PCC chief Botcha Satyanarayana and AICC observer Vayalar Ravi in the Parakala Assembly constituency on Sunday, the police took some 300 Telangana activists into preventive custody and stirred a hornet’s nest.

Enraged over the police action, a large number of TRS leaders, including Vinay Bhaskar, Rajaiah, Ravinder Reddy and others squatted before the district police headquarters demanding that their activists be released immediately.

A male reporter was slapped by actor Will Smith when he tried to kiss him while he was walking the red carpet at an event.

The reporter from a Ukrainian television station was attempting a pre-screening interview when he grabbed the actor and tried to plant a kiss on his lips.

Sangakarra happy over Chargers’ performance

Deccan Chargers may not have qualified for the play-offs of the Indian Premier League-V but captain Kumar Sangakkara is happy the way his team performed in the last two matches.
