IPL Shame : Peerzada discharged from hospital

Sahil Peerzada, who was assaulted and injured while resisting an IPL cricketer’s alleged attempt to molest his American fiancee Zohail Hameed at a hotel here last week, was discharged from hospital Monday.

Peerzada underwent a surgery after his ear was injured when Luke Pomersbach, an Australian who plays for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the IPL, punched him.

Pomersbach allegedly hit Peerzada when he objected to the cricketer’s bid to molest his fiancee.

After being allegedly hit by the cricketer, Peerzada was admitted to a hospital here Friday morning.

EC says no to general transfers till June 15

The Election Commission on Monday asked the State Government to postpone the general transfers of officials till the end of by-elections’ process.

Talking to reporters at the State Secretariat, Chief Electoral Officer Bhanwarlal said that the State Government has sought the Election Commission’s advise on the general transfers. However, he said that the government has been asked to hold the transfers till the declaration of by-elections results on June 15.

21-year-old Nikhil Soman Nair from Kerala state’s Pathanamthitta district, was found dead seven days after he landed in UAE to work for a printing press owned by another Keralite.

According to social worker Ashraf, the youth was brought to UAE to work in a company managed by one of his neighbours back home. He is the only son of his father who married thrice.

Sensex closes 30 points up; investors fret over weak rupee

After rising over 140 points intra- day, the BSE benchmark Sensex finally closed with a meagre gain of 30 points amid hectic selling in the last hour of trade triggered by the rupee moving towards its record lows against the dollar.

The 30-share Sensex, which climbed to day’s high of 16,298.39 led by smart gains in State Bank of India and Reliance Capital stocks, encountered a sudden bout of selling after investors became jittery over the weakness in rupee.

The rupee on Monday plunged below 55-level to trade at record low of 55.04 against dollar at 1655hrs.

Earlier in the day, rupee tumbled to an all-time low of 54.99 a dollar, just one paise short of the psychological 55 level in pre-close trade due to increased demand for the American currency from banks and importers.

US envoy warns N Korea against new nuclear test

A top US official on Monday warned North Korea against “further miscalculation” amid fears of a new nuclear test.

“It is very important that North Korea (DPRK) not miscalculate again and engage in any future provocation, and that’s the main message that we’re conveying to North Korea (DPRK),” Glyn Davies, the US special representative on the DPRK, told reporters after meeting with his South Korean and Japanese counterparts.

Strauss-Kahn faces inquiry over alleged 2010 rape

A French prosecutor has opened a preliminary probe into allegations of rape in a Washington hotel by former Internal Monetary Fund (IMF) chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn.

The office of the prosecutor, in Lille in northern France, said that they are looking into the allegation that Strauss-Kahn may have been involved in a rape during a sex party in the hotel while he was the IMF chief, The New York Post reports.

Earlier this month, a Belgian prostitute had claimed that she was assaulted by Strauss-Kahn at Washington’s W Hotel in December 2010.

Yemen: Suicide bomber kills 96 at military parade

A suicide bomber killed at least 96 soldiers during a rehearsal for a military parade in Yemen’s capital city of Sana’a, a report said on Monday.

The bomber was dressed in a military uniform. He blew himself up in the middle of the battalion that was rehearsing for an Army parade marking the 22nd anniversary of the unification of north and south Yemen.

Officials however put the death toll at 63.

Earlier, police officials said that at least 50 soldiers were killed in al-Sabeen square, a few meters northwest of the presidential palace.

Pak Govt has sold itself for $365 mn: Imran Khan

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan has said the country’s present rulers have sold themselves for 365 million dollars.

“Our 24 soldiers were killed in a 90-minute attack by the NATO forces and yet no apology was sought,” The News quoted Khan, as saying.

Imran said the Parliament has passed three resolutions against drone attacks, and that NATO supplies will not resume unless these drone intrusions are halted.

“Reopening of NATO supplies and participation in war against terror will not benefit Pakistan in any way,” Khan added.

Apologise for deaths at Salalah: Rehman to US

Asserting that Islamabad has already taken the first step to restore normalcy in bilateral ties, Pakistan Ambassador to the US Sherry Rehman has sought an apology from Washington for the November 26 NATO air strike in Salalah that killed 24 Pak soldiers.

In her opinion piece in The Chicago Tribune, Rehman wrote that Pakistan has already taken the first step to restore normalcy in US-Pakistan relations by working to reopen the NATO supply routes that were closed after the Salalah tragedy.

HC asks Tiwari to give blood sample on May 26

Congress leader ND Tiwari was on Monday asked by the Delhi High Court to appear in person on May 26 before it to give blood sample for a DNA test to decide the paternity suit of a man claiming to be his son.

“Defendent number 1 (Tiwari) is directed to appear on May 26 at 12 noon along with his two photographs,” Joint Registrar of Delhi High Court, Deepak Garg, said, adding that the court should not rush to take police assistance for enforcing its order.

11 rights violation cases against defence since 2009

Defence forces are investigating 11 cases of human rights violation registered against their personnel since 2009, but 158 such complaints were found to be false, government told the Lok Sabha on Monday.
