Jagan’s mother hits out at Sonia Gandhi for arrest

Late Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy’s widow Y.S. Vijayamma Sunday blamed Congress president Sonia Gandhi for the arrest of her son Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy.

Vijayamma, who along with other family members, called on Jagan at Dilkusha Guest House Sunday night, told reporters that Gandhi was targeting Jagan for going ahead with his “Odarpu Yatra” following YSR’s death in a helicopter crash in September 2009.

As the summer peaks, so have the woes of Gurgaon. The Millennium City has been witnessing 8-10 hours of powers cuts a day even as it grapples with its worst ever water crisis, with supply plunging to an all-time low of 15% of the usual volume in many areas on Sunday.

The water shortage, affecting as many as 65 residential colonies in new Gurgaon, has been getting worse for the past two weeks. “I have been living in this city for the last 11 years, and I have never seen such a water crisis,” said Sudhir Kapoor, secretary general, DLF City RWA.

Two toddlers killed in France fire

A fire broke out in a home in France Sunday, killing two toddlers — aged 18 months and four years — and asphyxiating their five-year-old sister, media reports said.

The blaze occurred in Libourne in southwest France, Xinhua reported citing RTL radio.

The children’s mother jumped from a window to escape the fire, the report said.

Two hours before the fatal incident in Libourne, a fire in a seven-storey building in Paris’s 20th arrondissement region injured at least 17 people.

Rihanna strips for nude photo shoot

Singer Rihanna recently did a photo shoot for a perfume called Nude. She wore just a gold necklace for the campaign.

The 24-year-old singer sported tousled blonde hair instead of the dreadlocks that she was seen sporting last week on “American Idol”, reports The Sunday.

She later took to Twitter to tell her fans that the blonde look was temporary.

“Blonde was just for the shoot! I’m still black,” she tweeted.

Five killed in Pakistan drone strike

At least five suspected militants were killed and four others injured just after midnight Sunday in a US drone strike in Pakistan’s northwest tribal region, media reports said Monday.

The drone fired four missiles around 1 a.m. at a house and a vehicle in Mir Ali area of North Waziristan along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, Xinhua reported citing Urdu TV channel Dunya.

Residents said the toll may rise further as the injured were in critical condition. Identities of the killed and injured people were not known.

32 children killed in Syria, UN leads calls for urgent world action

The United Nations led calls on Saturday for urgent international action on Syria after reports of a horrific massacre by regime forces that left 92 people dead, more than a third of them children.

UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon and UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan jointly condemned the “appalling and brutal crime,” which involved “indiscriminate and disproportionate use of force,” and was “a flagrant violation” of international law and commitments by Syria’s government not to use heavy weapons or violence.

Mubarak aide gets seven years in prison

A criminal court in Egypt has convicted former chief of presidential staff Zakaria Azmi of corruption and abuse of office and sentenced him to seven years in prison.

The court fined Azami and his wife Bahia to return to Egyptian treasury 36 million Egyptian pounds (around $6 million).

Former president Hosni Mubarak has been under arrest at the International Medical Center near Cairo. Mubarak, his two sons, former interior minister Habib al-Adli and six of his aides are accused of corruption and killings of hundreds of protesters during the uprising that ousted Mubarak from power.

23 killed in Maharashtra bus accident

At least 23 people were killed and another 10 injured when a tempo hit two stationery private mini-buses on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway early Monday, officials said.

The accident occured near Khalapur, around 80 km from Mumbai.

According to the Raigad police control, the accident occurred shortly after midnight when one of the two ill-fated mini-buses had halted for rectifying some technical problem.

Knight Riders lift IPL trophy for first time

Manvinder Sultansingh Bisla justified his late inclusion with a brilliant knock of 89 that carried Kolkata Knight Riders to a memorable five-wicket victory against Chennai Super Kings for their maiden trophy success in the Indian Premier League here Sunday.

‘Engg entrance test be conducted twice a year’

Ahead of the crucial joint council meeting of IITs and NITs tomorrow on the new format of entrance test, Super-30 founder Anand Kumar, well known for getting over 300 students from marginalised sections into the IITs, has suggested making the test more “transparent” and conducting it twice a year.

In a letter to HRD Minister Kapil Sibal, Anand, from whose coaching institute 27 out of 30 students cracked the IIT-JEE this year, has also suggested that students from rural areas be given three chances instead of two at present to qualify for the examination.

Bus mishap in Maharashtra, at least 23 killed

At least 23 people were killed when a stationery private mini-bus was rammed from the rear by a tempo on the Mumbai-Pune highway near Khalapur in the wee hours on Monday.

According to reports, eleven women and four children are among those who have died in the mishap.

According to the state highway police control, the accident occurred shortly after midnight when the ill-fated bus had halted for rectifying some technical problem.

Suddenly, a speeding tempo rammed it from the rear, instantaneously killing many of the occupants who were sleeping in the bus at that hour.

CPM’s language is similar to terrorists: Modi

Narendra Modi on Sunday took on CPM saying that the language used by them is similar to that of terrorists.

Modi was reacting to a speech made by CPM’s Idukki district secretary M M Mani in which he stated that there had been instances of the party eliminating political rivals.

Air India board to discuss pilots’ strike today

Air India board will meet in Mumbai on Monday to discuss the nearly three-week-old strike by over 200 pilots and a host of financial issues. Airline sources said the board is likely to consider the next steps to be taken to deal with the strike, spearheaded by the now derecognised Indian Pilots Guild.

The airline has sacked 101 pilots and is mulling hiring new pilots to restore normalcy its flight schedules, particularly international operations which have been curtailed due to the agitation.
