Jagan sent to jail for 14 days

A special court Monday remanded YSR Congress Party leader Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy to judicial custody for 14 days in a disproportionate assets case.

The CBI court sent the Lok Sabha member to judicial custody till June 11. The court dismissed his bail petition.

The court also dismissed CBI’s petition seeking 14-day judicial custody of the accused.

Judge A. Pullaiah, who heard arguments from both sides in the morning, pronounced his order around 4.30 p.m.

Jagan is criminal minded since his childhood: Botsa

President PCC Botsa Satyanarayana told that YSR Congress president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy is criminal minded since his childhood.

Talking to media here at Gandhi Bhavan Botsa Satyanarayana alleged that Jagan has links with criminals. He warned that state government will initiate strong measures against persons causing damage to the society.

Americans flocking to India for stem cell therapy

A growing number of Americans are travelling to India to seek treatment for rare diseases through India`s experimental embryonic stem cell therapy, according to an investigative report.

Among them Cash Burnaman, a 6-year-old South Carolina boy, who travelled with his parents to India seeking treatment for a rare genetic condition that has left him developmentally disabled, CNN reported.

Protein `helps body attack cancer`

Scientists claim to have engineered a protein which allows the body`s immune cells to get inside tumours and attack cancer cells.

The pioneering experiment, published in the `Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences` journal, was carried out by an international team led by Prof Ruth Ganss at the Western Australian Institute for Medical Research.

“Until now, immunotherapy has not been very successful in treating cancer because tumours are very resistant to immune cells,” said Dr Anna Johansson, from The University of Western Australia, a team member.

New treatment for eye patients

An eye hospital in Kolkata has introduced an innovative method of `Auto blood Conjunctival Graft Fixation` surgery for treating Pterygium patients with their blood.

Pterygium is a wing-shaped fibro vascular tissue encroaching on to cornea from the nasal or temporal side causing visual disturbance, irritation and redness of eye.

“The idea of using natural blood clot as tissue adhesive is derived to provide the benefits of glue fixation to the patients minus drawbacks,” said Santanu Mitra, senior consultant – cataract and occuloplasty services, Disha Eye Hospitals & Research centre.

Office desk `may jeopardise your health`

Office desks put workers at risk of serious illness because they are crawling with germs, experts have warned in a new study.

Workplace kitchens and break rooms are also at risk, particularly sinks where staff clean their cups and plates and also microwave door handles.

In a US study, hygienists collected nearly 5,000 swabs from buildings including law firms, insurance offices, call centres and healthcare companies. It found office workers unwittingly spread bugs around on a daily basis.

Monsoon to arrive in the 1st week of June

The South-West monsoon which advanced into the Bay of Bengal near the Andaman Islands, is likely to arrive in the State in the first week of June, maintaining its normal timing.

Director State Meteorological Office G. Sudhakar Rao said that the rainfall in the state during this monsoon would be normal.

Fire in Jet Airways plane; passengers safe

About 158 passengers on board Jet Airways Riyadh-Mumbai flight on Monday escaped unhurt after a fire broke out in the left engine of the aircraft on its landing here.

The incident took place when the flight arrived around 5.40 am, airport sources said.

The Jet plane was on the taxiway when the follow me up vehicle saw a fire in the left engine of the aircraft. The pilot was told to hold and shut the engine, they said.

“However, the fire was immediately put out and all the passengers were deplaned safely,” they added.

BSP-SP MLAs clash on Day 1 of UP Assembly Session

The first day of the Budget Session of the newly-elected Uttar Pradesh Assembly witnessed chaos on Monday as MLAs belonging to the opposition BSP trooped to the Well of the House creating ruckus.

As soon as Governor BL Joshi started his customary address to the Assembly of the first day of the Budget Session, BSP MLAs started shouting and ran to the Well of the House. They were reportedly protesting against poor law and order situation in the state.

The BSP legislators tried to throw papers on Governor Joshi and also clashed with the ruling Samajwadi Party MLAs and marshals.

Gilani supports dual citizenship for MPs

Days after the Supreme Court suspended a member of parliament over her dual citizenship, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said he was in favour of expatriate Pakistanis getting right to vote and becoming parliamentarians.There was no restriction on dual citizenship in the constitution, Gilani said.

He pointed out that over 300 councillors, mayors and members of the House of Commons and House of Lords in Britain were Pakistanis, Daily Times reported.

Andhra HC strikes down minority sub quota

In a significant development, the Andhra Pradesh High Court on Monday rejected the Centre’s move to create a sub-quota for minorities on religion basis.

A division bench of the High Court comprising Chief Justice Madan B Lokur and Justice PV Sanjay Kumar said that there was no rationale in providing reservation to minorities on the basis of religion.

Pinay in UAE accuses Pakistani friend of setting her up for rape

A Filipina, who claimed to have been raped by a Pakistani driver in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in February this year, accused her friend, also a Pakistani, of setting her up for the crime.

According to a report of the news site Khaleej Times, a 28-year-old Pakistani driver faced a UAE court on Wednesday last week for the rape of the 39-year-old Filipina.

The driver also allegedly took photos of the victim as she lay naked on the ground.

British conservative backbencher Greg Knight is spearheading calls to ban animals’ halal slaughter, stirring a debate that pits religious sensitivities against the convictions of animal welfare campaigners.

No hike in diesel/ LPG prices: Jaipal Reddy

Amid nationwide outrage over the Rs 7/litre hike in petrol prices, Petroleum Minister S Jaipal Reddy on Monday made it clear that the government is not considering raising the prices of diesel, LPG or kerosene in the immediate future.

Speaking to reporters after meeting Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee to discuss the impact of fule prices on inflation, Reddy said, “…not going to touch the price of LPG, diesel and kerosene, full stop.”

CBI cases against Jagan may be stronger than against Maran

It took three days for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to finally arrest YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, Kadapa MP and son of the late former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy (YSR), in Hyderabad on Sunday evening. Jagan was arrested allegedly for his evasive answers to questions put by the CBI, which forced the latter to seek custodial interrogation.

Court verdict on Muslim reservations today

A division bench of Andhra Pradesh High Court comprising of chief justice Madan B Lokur and justice PV Sanjay Kumar will pronounce its judgment today on a petition filed against creation of a sub-quota of 4.5 percent reservation to notified minority groups, including Muslims, from out of the 27 percent reservation meant for OBCs (Other Backward Classes).

Youth drowns in lake

(Siasat News): A 19-year-old youth drowned in a city lake while he was trying to retrieve a cricket ball from a tank in Bahadurpura.

Police said Mohd. Ghayasuddin, resident of Kishenbaug, jumped into the Miralam tank while he and his friends were playing cricket in the government park. When one batsman hit the ball, it went into the lake. Ghayasuddin, who was fielding, jumped into the lake to get it.
