Four passport office employees held in fraud case

Four Regional Passport Office (RPO) staffers were today arrested for allegedly “colluding” with touts in issuing passports under Tatkal scheme.

“The accused, identified as Jambla Karunaker and Subodh Kumar (both Upper Division Clerks), Narla Siva Ram Prasad and K David, (both Lower Division Clerks) working in the Passport Seva Kendra, abetted passport agents in preparing files for obtaining passports under Tatkal Scheme with fake election voter ID proofs,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Detective Department) P J Victor said.

Drunk man rapes 65-year-old mother-in-law

In an outrageous incident, a drunk man allegedly raped his 65-year-old mother-in-law. The victim, who is a TB patient, filed a complaint with the Koradi police accusing Ramesh Gawhane of committing the heinous act.

A father of three, 46-year-old Gawhane, is absconding. Gawhane’s daughter got married a year ago. His two sons are studying in ninth and seventh standard respectively. The matter was reported to Koradi police station by the victim’s daughter on Tuesday night.

AP govt sanctions land for port near Machilipatnam

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy today announced that government had sanctioned 5,324 acres of land for the construction of port near here. Of the sanctioned land, 1,623 acres will be handed over to the port construction company immediately by the district administration, he said. The CM handed a copy of the government order to the District Collector at a public meeting and asked the construction company `Navayuga Constructions’ to complete the job at the earliest.

I won’t be responsible for by-poll results: D L Ravindra Reddy

Andhra Pradesh Health Minister Dr D L Ravindra Reddy today said here that he would not be responsible for the results of the upcoming by-election in the district. “I would not take any responsibility for the by-polls,” he said. Talking to reporters, the Minister alleged that Congress had finalised candidates without consulting the senior leaders, and the Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy himself would be responsible for the outcome.

Suicide bombers kill 7 after Obama leaves Afghan capital

Suicide bombers attacked a compound housing Westerners in Kabul today hours after US President Barack Obama signed a security pact during a short visit to a city that remains vulnerable to a resilient insurgency.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack which involved a car bomb and insurgents disguised as women on the eastern outskirts of the capital, killing seven people, a Gurkha guard and six passers-by, and wounding 17.

Egyptian army to hand over power May 24ii

Egypt’s military is ready to hand over power to a new president after the first round of the vote May 24, Egyptian Armed Forces Chief of Staff Sami Anan said.

That will happen if the first round produces an outright winner, he said Wednesday.

“The Military Council is looking forward to the presidential election,” he said.

With 13 candidates in the running, none are expected to garner more than 50 percent in the May 23-24 vote, which is likely to go to a run-off in June.

Three Russian women kill paedophile

Three Russian women have been charged with assaulting a suspected paedophile and battering him to death, officials said.

The attack took place during a drinking party at a private home in Kushva town in Sverdlovsk region, after a nine-year-old girl complained that one of the male guests had sexually abused her.

One man was also allegedly involved in the murder, the investigative committee said.

The suspected paedophile died as a result of a fatal head injury caused by the girl’s mother, two other women and a man with a criminal record.

World’s oldest blood found in 5,300-year-old body

Scientists have discovered the world’s oldest blood cells in the remains of a 5,300-year-old iceman found in Italy.

The scientists found traces of blood around an arrow wound that killed the man in the mountains of what is now the Alto-Adige region of northern Italy.

“Otzi the iceman” was discovered in 1991 at 3,200 metres in a glacier by hikers in the German-speaking region near the border with Austria.

His remains were so well preserved that scientists have estimated he was 45-years-old at the time he was killed.

Nupur Talwar’s bail rejected, moves apex court

Her bail rejected by a CBI court, dentist Nupur Talwar, accused in the murder of her teenaged daughter Aarushi and domestic help Hemraj, Wednesday moved the Supreme Court against the rejection.

The CBI court in Ghaziabad rejected Talwar’s bail application. While passing the order CBI judge S. Lal observed: “I am not inclined to exercise the discretion in favour of accused applicant to grant bail.”

After hearing arguments from both sides, judge Lal in his order said: “There is prima facie evidence to suggest the involvement of the accused (in the murder).”

Tatra scam: CBI grills Tejinder for 6 hours

The CBI Wednesday questioned Lt. Gen. (retd) Tejinder Singh for six hours in connection with alleged irregularities in the import of all-terrain heavy-duty Tatra trucks for the Indian Army and bribery allegations made by Army chief Gen. V.K. Singh, an official said here.

A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) official said Tejinder Singh reached the probe agency’s office around 11 a.m. and was questioned till 5 p.m.

Pakistan condemns Quran burning in US

Pakistan has condemned the April 28 burning of copies of the Quran by US pastor Terry Jones in Florida.

“Pakistan strongly condemns the burning of the holy Quran by Pastor Terry Jones, head of the Dove world Qutreach Center in Florida recently,” Xinhua quoted the foreign ministry as saying Wednesday.

“We feel that such senseless acts would only inspire hatred and violence in the world,” a statement said.

Hamid Ansari leads the Presidential race

In the race to the Rashtrapati Bhavan it was RJD chief Lalu Prasad’s turn to make a political statement. The RJD chief said that he was willing to back Vice President Hamid Ansari. But in the Opposition, BJP leader Sushma Swaraj met NDA convenor Sharad Yadav to sort out differences on the Presidential candidate.

This comes a day after cracks appeared in the NDA over Ansari’s candidature. The JD(U) had clearly distanced itself from BJP Swaraj’s statement opposing both Ansari and Pranab Mukherjee. The NDA partners now seems to be in a damage control mode.

Ramdev remark angers MPs

As Ramdev stoked a controversy calling MPs “dacoits and murderers”, RJD chief Lalu Prasad Wednesday termed these as the utterings of a frustrated man while Congress member Jagdambika Pal and Samajwadi Party legislator Shailendra Kumar said they will move a breach of privilege motion against the yoga guru in the Lok Sabha.

“Baba Ramdev is frustrated. Whosoever speaks like this, is frustrated. He is a mental case,” Lalu Prasad said.

Raising the issue in the Lok Sabha, SP leader Shailendra Kumar demanded action against those making derogatory remarks against MPs.
