Election panel refuses to intervene in Jagan’s case

The Election Commission of India Tuesday refused to intervene in YSR Congress Party leader Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy’s arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), party sources said.

The commission conveyed to YSR Congress Party’s honorary president Vijayamma that since the matter was in court, it would not intervene, the sources said.

Jagan, as the young leader is popularly known, was arrested Sunday in a case of illegally acquiring assets. Vijayamma is his mother.

40 killed in Nigeria community clashes

At least 40 people have been killed in a boundary clash between two local communities in southeastern Nigeria, a government official said Tuesday.

According to Stephen Asuquo, chairman of Odukpani council, the clashes erupted last week after members of Ntan Obu-Ukpe and Ikpanya communities started fighting over land rights, Xinhua reported.

The violence broke out in the early hours of Wednesday, he said.

“There is no house standing there, the entire village has been destroyed and burnt down,” Asuquo told reporters.

Bangalore woman hacked in public view

A young woman was hacked to death on Monday evening by two bike-borne assailants in full public view on 7th Cross, BTM Layout.

Divya S, 23, an employee of a private company, was heading to her NS Palya home at 6.45pm when the two men blocked her. They slashed her repeatedly on the neck and face with a machete before speeding away on their two-wheeler, which bore no registration number. It was all over in 40 seconds, eyewitnesses told TOI.

The Pakistani doctor who helped the CIA find Osama bin Laden faced accusations of corruption and other wrongdoing long before he was captured by Pakistani intelligence agents and then jailed for 33 years for treason.

In interviews over the weekend, several current and former Pakistani officials described the doctor, Shakil Afridi, as a hard-drinking womaniser who had faced accusations of sexual assault, harassment and stealing. They said his main obsession was making easy money.

Where India’s last Mughal emperor lies buried

India’s last Mughal emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar, lay buried here for nearly 130 years in a forgotten grave until 1991 when his final resting place was chanced upon during digging.

His mausoleum in this former capital of Myanmar is frequented by those who want to have a glimpse of the tomb of the man who was the last emperor of India. He died Nov 7, 1862, after being exiled by the British.

After the first war of independence in 1857, the British whisked the emperor away to Myanmar, then Burma, where he died at the age of 87 at Rangoon, now Yangon.

Helped by Muslims, Hindus throng Kashmir shrine

Scores of Kashmir Pandit devotees thronged the Khirbhawani temple shrine in Jammu and Kashmir Tuesday amid emotional scenes of Hindu-Muslim amity.

Using buses, taxis and even two-wheelers, Hindus paid obeisance at the holiest Hindu shrine of Mata Khirbhawani in Tullamulla village, 24 km from summer capital Srinagar in Ganderbal district.

Elaborate security arrangements had been made by the authorities as most devotees arriving at the shrine were Hindus who had left the Kashmir Valley in the early 1990s with the outbreak of separatist violence.

Congress mum, Togadia seeks centre’s apology on minority reservation

Congress is tight-lipped over striking down of 4.5% central sub-quota for minorities within the OBC quota by the Andhra Pradesh High Court. It has refused to comment on the matter immediately. On questioning about the Andhra Pradesh high court verdict, party spokesman Manish Tiwari told that we cannot comment until the copy of High Court judgment is not received.

Meanwhile VHP has welcomed the Andhra Pradesh High Court verdict and demanded an apology from Congress led UPA government for the unconstitutional action.

Cong-led states to admit Muslim students in schools under RTE: Sibal

The Union Minister for Human Resources and Development, Kapil Sibal, on Monday said that directions would be issued to Congress-led state governments to treat Muslim students for admission in schools under the 25 per cent economically weaker section quota mandated by RTE.

A spokesman of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind in a statement e-mailed to Greater Kashmir said a high level delegation of JUH called on Sibal here and reminded him about the promises he had made to them at the JUH 31st general session held at Ram Lila ground here.

New feature in Electronic Voting Machine

Electronic Corporation of India (ECIL) has provided a new feature in the new Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) for the convenience of voters. Now voters can see the candidate serial number and his party symbol (in whose favour the vote is cast), on its LCD panel for a few seconds. There was no such provision in the Electronic Voting Machines used so far. A sort of printer facility has been added to the Ballot Unit.

Khurshid: Govt to defend sub-quota decision in SC

Monday’s decision of the Andhra High Court to “set aside” a 4.5% sub-quota to minorities in jobs and education casts a cloud over admissions in centrally-funded institutions, such as the IITs, even as the UPA government gave indications that it would defend the quota in the Supreme Court.

“The appropriate step would be to file a special leave petition in the Supreme Court after the government applies its mind,” minister for law and minority affairs Salman Khurshid said.

Jagan files bail petition

YSR Congress president Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy has filed bail petition in the CBI special court here on Tuesday.

Jagan has said in the petition filed through his lawyer that he as the president of his party needed to campaign for the candidates in the ensuing by-elections and prayed for bail. Maintaining that his arrest was improper, he has asked the court to give him bail to enable him to campaign for his party candidates.
