The Governor, Mr E S L Narasimhan, today appealed to every citizen to strive for protecting the waning traditional arts.

Speaking as the chief guest at inaugural function of “Antharjateeya Mangala Vayidya Sammelanam” organized by the Siliconandhra and Department of Cultural Affairs here on Saturday, Mr Narasimhan opined that culture and arts would bring about unity among different classes of people. He also appealed to the organizers to rope in the youth in the cultural and traditional arts programs for their revival.

Telugu Desam Party has confirmed Kandukuri Veeraiah as the party’s candidate for the Prathipadu (SC) Assembly segment, where a by-election will be held on June 12, notwithstanding the controversy stirred by his rivals over his caste.

9/11 attack mastermind on trial in Guantanamo

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged mastermind behind the 9/11 terror attack, and four other suspects Saturday appeared at a US military tribunal at Guantanamo Bay.

The arraignment marked the second time the US has tried to prosecute the 9/11 suspects, Xinhua reported.

The five defendants are being held in a classified section under tight security.

Egypt military declares curfew for second night

Egypt’s ruling military has declared an overnight curfew for a second successive night as relative calm returns to the capital Cairo after deadly clashes with protesters.

The curfew will be imposed between 2100 GMT on Saturday and 0400 GMT on Sunday in the Defense Ministry district of the capital Cairo, AFP reported.

On Friday, at least two people were killed and 300 others, including security forces, were injured in the area around the Defense Ministry building in clashes between Egyptian forces and protesters demonstrating against the ruling military council.

The threat of another pilots’ stir in Air India loomed large on Saturday, as one of its international flight was cancelled and two more delayed by over 16 hours after a section of pilots reported sick, apparently to protest rescheduling of Boeing 787 Dreamliner training programme.

While a flight to Singapore from Delhi (AI-380), scheduled at 0005 hours tomorrow, was cancelled, two services to New York (AI-101) and Toronto (AI-187), slated at 0145 hours and 0215 hours today, were delayed by over 16 hours, airport sources said.

Five bogies of Punjab Mail derail, 20 injured

Five bogies of the Punjab Mail have derailed near Rohtak, Haryana. 20 people have been injured in the incident but no casualties reported so far. The injured have been admitted in the PGI Hospital in Rohtak.

The train was on its way from Firozepur in Punjab to Mumbai when the accident occurred in the middle of the night.

The accident occurred due to break in railway line.

No drinking water facility in 13000 Bihar schools

Shortage of infrastructure in schools in Bihar was a ‘major challenge’, state Minister for Education PK Sahi said today adding there was no drinking water facility in around 13000 government schools.

Addressing a seminar ‘Right of Children and Law’, Shahi said several schools had no toilets, even for girl students. ”We have laid stress on improving infrastructural facilities in schools and ensuring quality education,” he said.

Man killed for having nude picture of cousin’s wife

A nude photo of his wife in his cousin’s mobile phone told him enough to gather his friends, orchestrate a plot involving Holi, bhang and consequent inebriation, and bludgeon his cousin to death, before dumping his body in the murky waters of the Malwani creek.

On Thursday, three young men were arrested on charges of murdering a 21-year-old man and dumping his body in the creek.

The case came on the cops’ radar when an informer tipped them off about a murder that had been committed in the mangrove swamp near the creek on Holi.

EC to act tough against cash and liquor flow in by-polls

Chief Electoral Officer Bhanwarlal on Saturday assured of taking adequate measures to stop flow of liquor and cash to lure voters in the by-elections for the 18 assembly and one Parliament seats in the State.

Talking to reporters at the State Secretariat, Bhanwarlal said that the Election Commission would also ensure that all candidates stop their campaign 48-hours before the polling. He informed that nearly Rs 5 crore cash and about 30,000 litres of liquor have been seized at different places in 12 districts where elections are to be held on June 12.

YSR industrial policy generated economic activity

YSR Congress on Saturday said that there was no truth in the reports appearing in a section of press on the alleged irregularities in the allotment of land to Lepakshi Knowledge Hub.

“The land was given for industrial development and economic generation is taking place at Lepakashi project, which was once barren and was put to good use by YSR government,” YSRC Party spokesperson Janak Prasad told reporters here.

Telugu Desam Party MLA Jaipal Yadav on Saturday came down heavily on the State and Central Governments for their failure to rescue farmers by implementing the anti-farmers’ policies.

Talking to media persons at Telugu Desam Legislature Party Office, Jaipal Yadav slammed the Centre for not taking any steps for the implementation of recommendations of Swaminathan Committee for the benefit of farmers.
