US-based charity builds schools for poor Muslims in AP

Indian Muslim Relief and Charities (IMRC), a US-based organization, has built 60 schools in the remote villages of coastal Andhra Pradesh and plans to construct 40 more to provide spiritual education to Muslims.

Under its platform, Rural Educational and Economic Development (REED), the organization has not only constructed the buildings of basic multipurpose one-teacher schools but also appointed trained Telugu-speaking teachers.

Narendra Modi woos Bihari settlers in election year

‘Taliban stronger after US reinforcement’

Senior US lawmakers say the Taliban militants have grown stronger in Afghanistan since the United States increased the number of its troops in the violence-scarred country in 2010.

“I think we both say that what we found is the Taliban is stronger,” Senate Intelligence Committee Chairwoman Dianne Feinstein told Fox News Sunday in an interview joined by House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers, who backed up her statement.

The two recently returned from a trip to Afghanistan.

17 devotees killed in Punjab accident

At least 17 people, including five women and five children, were killed early Monday in a head-on collision between a jeep and a truck near Punjab’s Moga town, 170 km from Chandigarh, police said.

The victims, who were devotees from Daulatpura village in Moga district, were returning from a shrine in Nanaksar near Jagraon town.

The accident took place on the Ludhiana-Ferozepur highway around 2 a.m.

Police said 14 people were killed on the spot while three others died in a hospital in Moga.

Misconception over foreign trips: Prez Patil

Facing criticism over her foreign visits, President Pratibha Patil on Sunday said there has been a “misconception” and wanted people to ascertain the factual position.

“Right now, there has been a misconception so far as the visits of the President are concerned…The President does not go at his/her own will. The Government gives a suggestion on the places the President should visit,” Patil said in an interview to a TV channel.

She said the people of the country should respect the President’s post and ascertain the factual position before raising questions.

Prez candidate should be acceptable to all: BJP

Former BJP president Rajnath Singh on Sunday said the Presidential candidate should not be disputable in any manner and favoured a person acceptable to the whole country.

“The candidate for the post of President of India should be above caste, religion and colour and he should not be disputable in any manner with no stigma of corruption, favouritism and political vendetta,” said the BJP MP from Ghaziabad.

He was speaking to media at his residence here today.

Militants kill nine Pakistani soldiers in ambush

According to army officials, the convoy was passing through Amin Picket, a security post on a hilltop outside Miranshah, the capital of North Waziristan, when “dozens” of militants assaulted the soldiers on Sunday morning.

“Militants hiding there opened fire on the soldiers with AK-47 assault rifles and RPGs,” said a senior army official, who asked not to be named.

“Three gunship choppers were called in but the militants even fired rockets at the choppers.”

The attack left nine troops dead, including one officer, and 12 others were wounded.

Syria begins first parliamentary elections under new constitution

Voting has started in polling stations across Syria as about 7,195 candidates, including independent and opposition figures, are running for 250 parliamentary seats.

The Syrian government has assured that it will provide all cities across the country with any requirements for the elections.

Syrian Interior Minister Mohammad Ibrahim al-Sha’ar visited several polling stations in the capital, Damascus, on Sunday.

The elections are part of the reforms promised by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Abducted Argentine girl found in Brazil

A 10-year-old Argentine girl was found by Brazilian police seven years after she was kidnapped by her father, authorities said.

The discovery of the child occurred this March in the western city of Dourados, but was only reported now by the media after the authorities, having confirmed her identity, handed her over to representatives of the Argentine Embassy.

Argentina destroys 11,000 firearms

Nearly 11,000 firearms surrendered by their owners were destroyed by the government as part of a programme to reduce the number of weapons in Argentina, officials said.

“We have now reached the figure of 160,531 firearms taken out of circulation,” said Justice Minister Julio Alak, who supervised the destruction of the weapons Saturday at a steel mill in Campana.

The firearms destroyed were the latest lot gathered under the National Voluntary Surrender Program, the Justice Ministry said in a statement.

Al Qaeda leaders killed in Yemen air strike

Two wanted terrorists of the Yemen-based Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) have been killed in a US air strike in a mountainous region in Yemen, a media report said.

Fahd al-Quso al-Awlaki and his nephew Fahed al-Akdam were killed Sunday in the air strike in southeastern Shabwa province, Xinhua reported.

Al-Quso was jailed in Yemen in 2002 for his involvement in attacking US Navy destroyer USS Cole in the country’s Aden port, in which 17 American sailors were killed.

Netanyahu calls for early polls in Israel

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called for an early general election in four months’ time, BBC reported.

The vote is expected to take place in September, a year before Netanyahu is required by law to seek a new mandate.

Netanyahu leads a centre-right coalition which includes his own Likud, and the Labour party of Ehud Barak. He has been prime minister since 2009.

According to opinion polls, Netanyahu is the most popular politician in Israel.

Indian held in South Africa for human trafficking

Six people including an Indian have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the trafficking of at least 47 victims in South Africa, a media report said.

The 47 people were rescued from Limpopo province, Xinhua reported citing police official Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi. All the victims were from Ethiopia, and were in good health, he said.

The six arrested include and Indian and five Ethiopians, he said. Their identities were not known.

Mexico City has started distributing 483,000 masks to residents who might need protection from the ash being spewed by the Popocatepetl volcano.

The Federal District’s Public Safety Secretariat activated its strategic plan Saturday, distributing the masks and starting a series of “talks on the preventive measures that should be taken” by the 8 million people living in the capital’s boroughs.
