Pakistan on Monday countered US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s remarks that it had not done enough against the 2008 Mumbai attacks mastermind Hafiz Saeed saying any evidence against him should be shared with Islamabad so that it can be examined by the courts.

‘Haram’ for Muslims to join unlawful assemblies, fatwa council declares

Muslims in the country are now barred from taking part in “unproductive” and unlawful assemblies, according an edict released by the National Fatwa Council.

“Rioting, causing disturbances and damaging public property are all forbidden by Islam. This also applies to any intention to topple a duly elected government by organising such demonstrations,” council chairman Tan Sri Dr Abdul Shukor Husin was quoted as saying by Bernama Online today.

A California university student left handcuffed in a federal holding cell for nearly five days without food or water has filed a claim for up to $20 million in compensation, saying he suffered kidney failure and nearly died as a result.

Threat of plastic bags bigger than atom bomb: SC

The supreme court on Monday said the threat of plastic bags, which is choking lakes, ponds and urban sewer system, is bigger than the atom bomb for the next generation.

Issuing notice in a PIL to the Centre and state governments, a bench of Justices G S Singhvi and S J Mukhopadhaya said unless a total ban on plastic bags was put in place the situation would be uncontrollable.

The PIL petitioners through senior advocate Shyam Divan cited studies showing veterinary hospital operation data finding 30-50 kg of plastic in cows stomachs across the country.

Gali’s bail petition hearing adjourned to May 11

The CBI Special Court at Nampally on Monday adjourned the hearing to May 11 on the bail petition of former Karnataka minister and mining baron Gali Janardhan Reddy, in the Obulapuram Mining Corporation illegal mining case.

After hearing the arguments of both Gali and CBI’s counsels, the court posted the petition to May 11 for next hearing.

Remove Kiran and Botsa from their posts: Shankar Rao to Sonia

Former minister Dr P Shankar Rao on Monday demanded that Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy and PCC president Botsa Satyanarayana be immediately removed from their posts.

In a letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Dr Shankar Rao alleged that the Dalits and those who launched a tirade against corruption were distancing away from the party. If the High Command does not replace the Chief Minister and his team till 2014, he said that the party would be in a difficult position in the State.

CBI files third charge sheet in Jagan’s assets case

The CBI on Monday filed third charge sheet against Kadapa MP and YSR Congress party president Jagan Mohan Reddy in connection with the disproportionate assets case.

According to reports, the 88-page charge sheet contains the statements of 72 witnesses besides having 143 documents. In the charge sheet, the CBI has accused Jagan of conspiring with his father and former Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy to get several favours for certain companies in return for the investments they made in his businesses.

Jagan not following YSR’s footsteps: CM

Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Monday said that former chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy advised him not to speak against the Congress party any time.

Participating in the by-election campaign at Draksharamam in Ramachandrapuram in East Godavari district, Kiran Kumar Reddy stated that he was following YSR’s words sincerely and never spoke against the Congress party anytime. Two days before the death of YSR, Kiran Kumar Reddy said that YSR convened a meeting with all the leaders including Jagan Mohan Reddy and advised all not to work or speak against the Congress party.

Modi can be prosecuted for promoting enmity: Amicus

A Supreme Court-appointed amicus curiae has held that Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi can be prosecuted under various sections of the IPC for “promoting enmity among different groups” during the 2002 Gujarat riots.

The report by Raju Ramachandran on the complaint of Zakia Jafri is in sharp contrast to the report of the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) which had earlier given a clean chit to Mr. Modi and others.

US will push Pak for Saeed’s conviction: Clinton

The US would push Pakistan for securing the conviction of Hafiz Saeed, the Mumbai attack mastermind, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Monday, adding that country has not done as much as US and India wanted it to fight terrorism.

Clinton also said the US will go after the militant groups in Pakistan and believed that the chief of al Qaeda Ayman al-Zawahiri, an Egyptian cleric who inherited the leadership from Osama bin Laden, was in that country.

SC notice EC, Centre on Swamy’s plea on EVMs

The Supreme Court today sought the stands of the Centre and the Election Commission of India on Janata Party chief Subramanian Swamy’s plea to incorporate either paper printouts with EVMs or restore paper balloting as the electronic machines are “not tamper-proof.”

Issuing notices to the Centre and the poll panel, a bench of justices P Sathavisam and J Chelameswar sought their replies on Swamy’s plea, which challenged the Delhi High Court’s order dismissing his petition on the issue earlier.
