13 killed in road accident in Jammu

Thirteen people were killed early Wednesday when their vehicle skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district, police said.

The Tata Sumo carrying 13 passengers rolled into a 300 metre deep gorge at Digdol, about 165 km north of Jammu city, an official said. All the passengers died instantly.

Bodies were scattered all over and police were finding it difficult to retrieve them, the official said.

Increase financial support to UN body: India

India has called on the international community to increase its financial support to the United Nations’ body dealing with women’s empowerment, to help it meet the global commitments of gender equality.

Addressing the annual session of UN Women’s executive board yesterday, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Hardeep Singh Puri said work on gender equality and empowerment of women continues to remain “chronically underfunded”.

Vice Admiral Chatterjee appointed DCNS

Vice Admiral Pradeep K Chatterjee, a veteran submariner, was on Tuesday appointed Deputy Chief of Naval Staff (DCNS) succeeding Vice Admiral Satish Soni who will now move to head the Kochi-based Southern Naval Command.

Commissioned into the submarine arm of Navy in January 1977, Chatterjee has commanded Shishumar class submarines such as the INS Shankush and Shankul.

His ship command include the training vessel INS Krishna and guided missile destroyer INS Rajput.

RSS disapproves of Team Anna comments against PM

The RSS on Wednesday disapproved of Team Anna’s comments against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh over the issue of corruption.

Decency in language should be maintained while criticising the Prime Minister, who holds the highest office in the Government, RSS Joint General Secretary Dattatraya Hosbale told reporters here.

Key aides of anti-graft crusader Anna Hazare have levelled corruption charges against Singh and some of his Ministers. The charges against the PM related to allotment of coal blocks when he was in-charge of the Coal Ministry.

Blackwater agents involved in Syria unrest

The agents of the US company Blackwater are operating inside Syria and are involved in the deadly turmoil in the Arab country that began in March 2011.

“We have real evidence now that the Blackwater company is working in Syrian territories,” said Taleb Ibrahim, a political analyst from Damascus.

Ibrahim also stated that there is a “third party” inside Syria that “wants to undermine” the six-point peace plan put forward by UN-Arab League envoy to Syria Kofi Annan in March.

US anti-Iran sanctions against international law

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Alexander Lukashevich has criticized the US sanctions against Iran as violating international law, noting that Russia opposes such measures.

“Regarding the US unilateral sanctions against Iran, which have been enforced during the past 20 years over concerns about Tehran’s nuclear energy program, I should say that Russia does not agree with the transnational nature of these sanctions,” Lukashevich said on Tuesday.

“Moreover, we believe that these sanctions are in contradiction to international law,” he added.

US marine held for raping minor girl in Italy

A US marine sergeant has been arrested by Italian police after he allegedly made a video of his repeated rape of a seven-year-old girl and posted it online.

The 28-year-old soldier from Florida was arrested Tuesday by the Italian carabinieri military police and is being held at a prison in Pisa.

The US has the right to request his extradition. The US marines took part in the investigation.

The unnamed suspect was serving at Camp Darby between Pisa and Livorno in Tuscany region.

‘T’ activists held for blast in Lagadapati’s resort

Four persons were arrested by the police in connection with the blast that occurred in a resort owned by Vijayawada Congress MP Lagadapati Rajagopal on the outskirts of the city.
