Sanjiv Bhatt writes to President, demands probe against Modi

Suspended Gujarat IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt has approached the President on the 2002 post-Godhra riots probe. In a letter to President Pratibha Patil, Bhatt has sought probe against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

Bhatt has sought that the Centre appoints a two-member commission to probe the role and conduct of Modi and his Cabinet, officials, police officers in the Godhra incident and the subsequent riots.

He has also sought investigation into the government’s measures on the rehabilitation for victims.

TRS to launch by-polls campaign from May 2

The Telangana Rashtra Samithi will launch its campaign for the by-elections in Parakala assembly constituency of Warangal district from May 2.

Briefing the media about the decisions taken during a meeting of TRS president K Chandrashekar Rao with the leaders of Warangal district leaders, TRS floor leader Etala Rajender said that the party would launch Palle Bata programme from May 2 to May 7 in Parakala constituency. He said besides the constituency-incharge, four TRS MLAs would also participate in the programme.

Rachabanda promises have been fulfilled, claims Hyd Collector

Hyderabad District Collector Natrajan Gulzar on Saturday claimed that most of the assurances made by Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy during the Rachabanda programme held on February 8 at Borabanda of Jubilee Hills assembly constituency has already been fulfilled.

The Hyderabad District Collector in a press note stated that the APSRTC have sanctioned 13 new big buses in the bus routes (45F and 113Y/F) going through Borabanda subsequent to the CM’s Assurance. Since the roads in the above routes are wider enough to accommodate big buses there is no necessity to operate mini buses.

Naidu promises stability and growth if voted to power

Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday called upon people to vote for stability and growth in the ensuing by-elections.

Addressing the TDP workers meeting at Rajampet town in Kadapa district as part of his election campaign, the TDP chief said that the only TDP could provide a stable government and development. Stating that the government led by Kiran Kumar Reddy has totally failed on all fronts in the State, he said that a stable government was needed to take the State on the part of development.

Lok Satta refutes TDP charge on fight against corruption

The Lok Satta Party on Saturday strongly refuted the Telugu Desam Party contention that its President Dr Jayaprakash Narayan is not fighting against corruption with an eye on electoral alliance with certain parties.

“The TDP seems to regard the State as its fiefdom and people as machines meant to vote for it only,” said the Lok Satta Party.

In a media statement, Lok Satta Party General Secretary Katari Srinivasa Rao referred to TDP leader A Revanth Reddy’s charge and said it is ridiculous.

Erasu refutes reports over differences between CM, PCC chief

Minister for Law and Courts Erasu Prathap Reddy on Saturday dismissed media reports which claimed that Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy and Pradesh Congress Committee president Botsa Satyanarayana were having differences over the selection of candidates for the by-elections.

Telugu Desam party MLA and official spokesperson Revanth Reddy on Saturday came down heavily on Y S R Congress party president Jagan Mohan Reddy for fooling the people by making dubious promises in Odarpu yatra and in the by-elections campaign.

Court rejects Gali, Srilakshmi’s plea to transfer bail petitions

The CBI Special Court at Nampally on Saturday dismissed the petition of mining baron Gali Janardhan Reddy and suspended IAS officer Y Srilakshmi to transfer their bail petitions to the Second Additional Special Court as the predecessor judge B Nagamaruthi Sarma had already heard the bail plea in part.

It may be mentioned that Justice Nagamaruthi Sarma has been transferred to another CBI court and he was replaced by Justice A Pullaiah.

While dismissing their appeals, the court has adjourned the hearing on bail petitions of Gali Janardhan Reddy to May 5 and Srilakshmi to May 2.

The Council of the Arab League reiterated Arabs’ firm stance of backing the UAE’s full sovereignty over its three islands, Abu Mousa, the Greater Tunb and the Lesser Tunb, including their regional waters, airspace, continental shelf and their exclusive economic zone, as integral parts of the UAE.

The Council, in a final communique at the conclusion of an extraordinary session of foreign ministers of member states, strongly denounced Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s visit to the UAE island of Abu Mousa on April 11 as a violation of the UAE’s sovereignty over its three islands.

ISI takes credit for US locating Osama; CIA sceptical

Nearly a year after Osama bin Laden was killed in his Abbottabad home, Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) claims it helped US locate the al-Qaeda chief’s high-walled hideout.

Osama was shot dead on May 2 last year at his Abbottabad house by US commandos, straining ties between Washington and Islamabad.

“The lead and the information actually came from us,” a senior ISI official told the Washington Post.

Washington is sceptical about the ISI claim.

Pentagon probes inaccurate content about Islam

The Pentagon is investigating whether military officials ignored complaints from senior officers about a course that was found to have inflammatory and inaccurate content about Islam.

The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Martin Dempsey, ordered the inquiry on Tuesday (April 24), the same day he canceled “Perspectives on Islam and Islamic Radicalism,” a training course that asserted that Islam was at war with the West. The course had been offered as an elective at the Joint Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Va., since 2004.
