Developing nations should work together: Prez

Welcoming the envoys of 12 countries, President Pratibha Patil on Tuesday said it was very important to work together and have institutions in which the voices from developing countries find expression owing to the global financial crisis and developments in the Euro zone.

“Improved financial governance, employment generation, promoting trade and investments are essential,” said Pratibha.

She said that India is willing to share its development experiences and expertise with other countries in the context of South-South co-operation.

Cash incentive to poor Muslim couples enhanced

The State government has issued a GO enhancing cash incentive from Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 to each poor Muslim couple under the scheme of Mass Marriages of poor Muslim girls in the State.

It may be mentioned here that the government has been granting financial assistance for “Mass Marriages of Muslims”. The scheme was renamed as “Marriages of Poor Muslim Girls” and presently granting Rs 15,000 for purchase of articles for each couple under Mass Marriages for poor Muslim Girls scheme.

Dattatreya demands white paper on ‘power sector’

Alleging that the Chief Minister’s negligent attitude towards the ‘power’ sector was creating troubles to all the sectors in the State, former Union Minister and BJP senior leader Bandaru Dattatreya has demanded the State Government to release a ‘white paper’ on power problem.

104 staff protest CM’s attitude

The employees of 104 Services have expressed their strong protest at the Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy’s attitude towards them, here on Tuesday.

The employees have gone to Chief Minister’s Camp office to meet him in the morning, to request him to solve their long-pending problems. But the Chief Minister is stated to have refused to meet them.

The employees lodged their protest over the Chief Minister not giving appointment to them, and warned that they will work against the Congress party in the coming general elections. (NSS)

Damodar Reddy defends T Cong MPs action in parliament

Supporting the Telangana Congress MPs action in the Parliament on Tuesday demanding separate Telangana State, Congress senior leader and Suryapet MLA R Damodar Reddy has urged the Congress Core Committee to take a decision on Telangana issue at least now.

Speaking to the media at CLP office here, Damodar Reddy said that the Telangana MPs were not stalling the House for the sake of their personal agenda, but they were doing it to fulfill the wishes and aspirations of Telangana people.

Governor ESL Narasimhan today shed tears when he participated in the Aradhanotsavam commemorating the first death anniversary of Satya Sai Baba here on Tuesday.

Stressing that the death of Satya Sai Baba created a void that could never be covered, the governor said that Baba always remained in the hearts of the devotees. He said that he was happy to be associated with the Aradhanotsavam.

Renuka, Chiru and Rapolu sworn in as RS members

The newly-elected Rajya Sabha members of Congress — Rapolu Ananda Bhaskar, K. Chiranjeevi and Renuka Choudary — were sworn in on Tuesday as members.

Bal Thackeray takes dig at debate over next President

Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray on Tuesday took a dig at the ongoing debate over the next President, questioning the need for intense discussion for the top job given the country’s vast population.

“We have such a large population and still discuss who will be our next President,” he said.

The Sena chief did not elaborate further on the issue.

Thackeray was speaking at an award function organised to mark the 70th death anniversary of Marathi theatre actor and renowned musician Dinanath Mangeshkar this evening.

CM assures financial help for Sangareddy communal riots victims

Government Whip and Sangareddy MLA T Jayaprakash Reddy alias Jagga Reddy on Tuesday claimed that the State Government would provide financial assistance to the victims of Sangareddy communal clashes in the next one week.

Wipe out Congress to get Telagnana: BJP

T-Cong MPs firm on continuing agitation

The Telangana Congress MPs, who were suspended for four days from Lok Sabha on Tuesday, announced that they would continue their protests until the Centre announces a decision on Telangana statehood.

Talking to media persons, Nagarkurnool MP Manda Jagannatham said that the MPs have stalled the proceedings of the Lok Sabha in view of long pending aspiration and demand of people in Telangana region. He said that the MPs were ready to face any consequences for achieving the separate state.

After ‘The Dirty Picture’ got pulled away from being aired on television due to its bold content, the makers of ‘Jannat 2’ have played safe and made certain changes in their upcoming film for the small screen audience.

The Emraan Hashmi starrer, directed by Kunal Deshmukh is a sequel to the 2008-hit film Jannat.

The second instalment is up for release on May 4. ‘Jannat’ was based on betting in cricket and the sequel is about illegal trading in arms and ammunition.

PM, Sonia attend marriage of Lalu’s daughter

RJD chief Lalu Prasad’s sixth daughter Anushka today tied the knot with Chiranjeev Rao, son of Haryana Power Minister Ajay Singh Yadav, at a ceremony attended by a host of political leaders including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi.

Rao is currently President of Haryana Youth Congress. The marriage, held at Prasad’s official residence 25, Tughlaq Marg here, recorded the attendance of the Prime Minister and the Congress President.

Suspicious Briton strangles girlfriend in bed

A suspicious British youngster strangled his model girlfriend in bed and his parents helped him cover up the murder, a court has heard.

Elliot Turner, 20, allegedly “flipped out” and killed Emily Longley, 17, after becoming suspicious that she had been having affairs during their four-month relationship, the Daily Mail reported.

His mother, Anita, 51, and father, Leigh, 57, of coastal resort town Bournemouth, initially told police they had heard Longley talking in their son’s bedroom, even though the prosecution say she was already dead.
