Pakistani, Afghan, US envoys to meet for peace talks

Top Pakistani, Afghan and US diplomats will meet in Islamabad April 26-27 to review the peace process in Afghanistan, the Pakistani foreign ministry said Wednesday.

Marc Grossman, special US representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Afghan Deputy Foreign Minister Jawed Luddin and Pakistani Foreign Secretary Jalil Abbas Jilani would represent their countries, Xinhua reported citing a ministry statement.

12 test postive to Swine Flu in Kerala

Twelve persons have tested positive to dreaded Swine Flu in Kerala since January one, according to state H1N1 office here today. Eight persons tested positive in Kozhikode district, two in Alappuzha, one each in Thrissur and Kasargode districts. However, no death was reported in this period in the State.

Amitabh happy to be cleared of Bofors taint

Mega star Amitabh Bachchan said Wednesday he was happy to be cleared of the Bofors allegations but was “pained” this had happened after 25 years.

Speaking to reporters here, Bachchan said that he had “lived with humiliation and loss of reputation” all these years.

However, he wished his father, the late Harivanshrai Bachchan, had lived to see the development. “My family knew the truth on Bofors all along, from day one,” Bachchan said.

Poll delays bonus for Goa employees, again

Goa government employees, waiting for a one-time bonus announced to them Dec 19 last year, have again been hit by the election code of conduct jinx.

The Rs.5,000 bonus for the C and D grade staff, announced by the then chief minister Digambar Kamat on the 50th anniversary of Goa’s liberation from Portuguese rule, will have to wait because of a by-poll May 2 in the Cortalim assembly constituency in South Goa.

“The one-time bonus cannot be given out because the election code of conduct is in force,” Chief Electoral Officer S. Kumaraswamy told reporters here Wednesday.

S&P lowers outlook on SBI, ICICI and HDFC Bank

Global ratings agency Standard & Poor’s Wednesday cut its outlook to negative from stable on 11 financial institutions, including the top three banks State Bank of India, ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank, to negative from stable, but kept their ratings unchanged.

The country’s largest lender State Bank of India’s ratings is kept unchanged at BBB(-) with outlook being lowered to negative from stable.

Russian plane forced to land in Pakistan

The Pakistan Air Force Wednesday forced a Russia-made cargo plane belonging to a foreign military to land at the Karachi airport after it violated Pakistani airspace, a media report said.

Geo News, however, did not mention the name of the country to which the plane belonged.

The cargo plane took off from the Bagram air base in Afghanistan and was supposed to fly to the Al Maktoum international airport in the United Arab Emirates.

Sources said such kind of cargo planes are used to carry NATO supplies to Afghanistan.

The plane is being checked and the crew interrogated.

Plea against special exam to recruit cops dismissed

Delhi High Court Wednesday dismissed an NGO’s petition challenging the government’s decision to recruit an additional 1,400 Indian Police Service (IPS) officers through a special examination and refused to interfere with a policy decision.

Norway killer terms insanity report as lie

Norwegian mass killer Anders Behring Breivik has told a court in Oslo that a psychiatric report that found him insane following the 77 killings he carried out was a “lie”.

Breivik said his argument was “entirely logical” and there was “not the slightest possibility I will be judged insane”, BBC reported Wednesday.

Two medical reports delivered opposing views on his sanity. The court’s ruling on this will determine whether Breivik is sent to jail or into psychiatric care.

Congress to field ex-CPI-M legislator in Kerala by-poll

Selvaraj, a two-time Kerala CPI-M legislator who quit the party last month, will contest the June 2 by-election to the Neyattinkara assembly constituency as a Congress candidate.

Announcing this at a public meeting in Neyattinkara Wednesday evening, state Congress president Ramesh Chennithala handed over the party membership to the former CPI-M legislator.

Seven killed in Haryana accident

At least seven people were killed and 13 others injured Wednesday in an accident involving three vehicles in Haryana’s Jind district, 160 km from here, police said.

The accident took place when a mini truck was overtaking a van and collided head on with a jeep coming from the opposite direction.

Police officials said the van driver also lost control over his vehicle and collided with the other two vehicles.

The police officials said most of those killed were travelling in the van. The victims were returning from a wedding function in Punjab.

Where is PM, BJP asks in Lok Sabha

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Wednesday criticised Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for his “persistent absence” from the Lok Sabha when crucial issues were being discussed.

Senior BJP leader Jaswant Singh lamented the prime minister’s absence in the house when External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna was making a statement on the April 8 visit of Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari to India. Zardari had held talks with the prime minister over lunch during the day-long visit.

No minister has offered to quit: Congress

The Congress Wednesday dismissed rumours that five union cabinet ministers had offered to quit and work to strengthen the party and denied that any such communication has been made to party chief Sonia Gandhi.

“These are internal matters of the party which normally should not have been discussed in media. But since media had taken up this issue Tuesday, I want to make it clear that Congress president has neither received any such letter nor anyone has said this thing to her verbally,” Congress’s media department chairman Janardan Dwivedi told IANS.

Maoists to release Hikaka Thursday

Maoists have decided to release Odisha legislator Jhina Hikaka Thursday after he promised to resign from the assembly and the primary membership of the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD), a rebel leader said Wednesday.

A Maoist leader calling herself ‘Aruna’, in an audio message aired by a local television channel here, said the decision was taken in a people’s court held Monday and Tuesday.

She said the legislator apologised to the rebels and villagers who participated in the people’s court for not being able to solve the problems of the tribal people through the political process.

Talwar couples misusing law: CBI tells SC

The development came days after the CBI assured the Supreme Court that it would not go ahead with Nupur Talwar’s arrest till her plea against the non-bailable warrant (NBW) is pending in the apex court.

The non-bailable warrant was issued against her by the special Ghaziabad court for not appearing for a hearing in the 2008 Aarushi-Hemraj double murder case.

In a desperate bid to evade her arrest, dentist Nupur Talwar had moved the Supreme Court challenging the non-bailable warrant issued against her by a Ghaziabad trial court.

A day after the two NRI children returned here after a protracted legal battle in Norway, External Affairs Minister SM Krishna on Wednesday telephoned his Norwegian counterpart Jonas Gahr Store and thanked him for assistance in resolving the custody row.

Implement UN Convention Against Corruption: Anna

Anna Hazare on Wednesday asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to implement the UN Convention Against Corruption and recommendations of A N Vohra Committee to tackle organised graft.

In a letter to Singh, the activist said both the UN Convention, to which India is a signatory, and the Vohra Committee had raised concerns and fears about corruption but no action has been taken.

Bofors case is closed, no need to reopen: Khurshid

Brushing aside fresh allegations in connection with the Bofors deal, Law Minister Salman Khurshid on Wednesday said that the case is closed and there is no need to reopen it.

The Law Minister also sought a public apology from all those making wild allegations against former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi for the past many years and tarnishing his image and hurting his family members.

Carve out Tamil Eelam from Sri Lanka: DMK MP

India should prevail upon the UN for carving out a separate Tamil Eelam from Sinhala-dominated Sri Lanka as the “tyranny” in the Tamil areas was continuing, DMK said in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour, party leader TR Baalu said army men were roaming around Tamil habitats in Sri Lanka and “thousands of people have been kept behind barbed wire fences”.

He said, “tyranny is going on, it is continuing. Indo-Sri Lankan accord is not being ratified and 13th Amendment (devolution of powers to ethnic Tamils) is not being implemented”.

Prez polls: Pawar meets Sonia Gandhi

NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Wednesday meet Congress president Sonia Gandhi amid assertions by the UPA ally that there should be a consensus on the name of the next president.

“We want a name with consensus,” NCP general secretary DP Tripathi said when asked about NCP’s preference for the next president.

Tripathi’s comments came on the sidelines of a meeting of the NCP’s extended working committee meeting here.

The NCP general secretary, however, maintained that there was no discussion on the name of Presidential candidate’s name in today’s meeting.

20 Taliban killed in operations across Afghanistan

The Afghan Interior Ministry announced in a statement on Wednesday that 11 militants were also wounded during the operations in the provinces of Kabul, Kapisa, Helmand, Logar, Kandahar, Ghazni and Paktia within the past 24 hours.

A variety of weapons were reportedly seized from captured militants as well.

The Taliban has claimed that the militant group inflicted heavy losses on the forces that fought them during the recent operations.

Insecurity continues to climb across Afghanistan despite the presence of nearly 130,000 US-led forces in the Asian country.

Four US-led soldiers die in Afghanistan in past 24h

Two foreign soldiers working with North Atlantic Treaty Organization forces were killed in bomb blasts in the country’s south and east on Monday, according to a NATO statement.

Meanwhile, two more US-led soldiers died of non-combat injuries in eastern and southern Afghanistan.

The military force did not reveal the nationality of the soldiers or the exact location of the incidents, but Georgian officials said one of their soldiers had been killed in the southern Helmand Province. Most of the foreign troops in the eastern part of Afghanistan are Americans.
