TOUGH posturing by the government has forced striking jewellers to backtrack on their three initial demands. Now, they only want the finance minister to roll back the excise duty on unbranded jewellery as it will keep excise officials at bay and prevent any possible return of ‘ Inspector Raj’. Despite finance minister Pranab Mukherjee assuring traders that their request would be considered on April 24, when the Finance Bill will be passed, jewellers have decided to continue their strike, which was announced on March 17.

Delhi cops finds diary of Def Ministry official

The diary was recovered from the flat in Hudco Place in south Delhi where Kumar Yashkar and his wife Archana Sharma were found dead on Friday.

The official said Yashkar has written that he was “being pressurised during work”.

Asked whether the officers named in the diary will be questioned, the official said they were examining the matter and they were talking to his family and colleaugues.

Yashkar, who was Deputy Director in the Directorate General of Medical Services, and his wife Archana were found dead in their flat on Friday afternoon.

41 Feared Dead In Siberian Plane Crash

A passenger jet has crashed early Monday morning in Russia’s Tyumen region, in Siberia. Unconfirmed reports say nearly all the 39 passengers and 2 crew members died.

Children have been reported among the victims.

Five people have survived the catastrophe, according to preliminary information.

However, survivors are said to have sustained serious injuries and burns. Rescuers are working at the crash site, while survivors have been taken to hospitals in Tyumen.­

A 24-year-old pregnant woman was allegedly kidnapped, held captive for several hours and robbed of jewellery worth Rs 2 lakh by unidentified persons here,police said on Saturday.

The victim claimed she had stepped out of her home atsuburban Goregaon for some work yesterday afternoon when four unidentified men in an Innova car abducted her, they said.

Massive drug smuggling rings busted, says official

Security forces seized SR1.7 billion worth of narcotics and arrested 681 men involved in drug smuggling and trafficking during the past four months, an official said yesterday.

“While 96 arrested men were Saudis, 585 of them belonged to 33 nationalities,” Ministry of Interior spokesman Maj. Gen. Mansour Al-Turki said in a press conference in Riyadh.

Al-Turki said 20 officers were injured in 43 operations against drug smugglers during this period.

Cop’s wife burns him to death in a fit of rage

A police inspector from Uttarakhand died on Sunday at New Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital after being set on fire allegedly by his wife in a fit of rage, police said.

56-year-old, Ram Lal Arya, who was posted at the police headquarters, died on Sunday morning after he was admitted at the hospital on Saturday evening, a police official said. He was referred to New Delhi by a hospital in Dehra Dun.

Arya received 80 per cent burns after his wife Radha allegedly poured a bottle of petrol over him and set him on fire.

Spice Jet flight grounded due to technical snag

A Hyderabad-bound Spice Jet aircraft was grounded at Gannavaram Airport due to last minute detection of a technical sang, here today. Airport Director Pattabhi told UNI that the pilot of the flight, which was scheduled to take off at 0830 hrs, noticed a technical snag when the aircraft was about to take off. The flight was immediately grounded and the passengers were sent to Hyderabad by another flight. The flight was being repaired and would take off as soon as the technical trouble is rectified, the Director said. UNI

A 13-year-old has been raped at Barakhurd village in this district’s Badera Police Station limits, police said. The victim, who was sexually assaulted, lodged a complaint against Basori Kol last evening. The accused is absconding. UNI
